Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: kingbaby on December 30, 2008, 09:33:55 AM I had the pleasure of going to the range last night with one of my SWAT buddies. After about 2hrs. I came to the conclusion, I suck. These guys can write words on the targets... no kidding. I did get to try a few handguns. most notable were the SigArms P229 357sig (by far the most powerful pistol i've ever seen), the Taurus 24/7 9mm HIGHLY modified & his Glock .45 He calls that one his angel. Seems to be the gun all those guys carry. He refers to them as a no bullshit, no frills, when your life is on the line gun. Coming from these guys, it must be the Gospel.
Look out empty cans, here I come !!! Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: bonfy on December 30, 2008, 11:25:31 AM [popcorn]
Interesting! I went out to Briton's on Christmas Day and we took a walk out to the field to put some rounds through my new pistol. I may have mentioned before that I am not a big firearm buff. It is work for me to go through this , but I know it is a worthwhile endeavor and I may need it someday. It was cold and windy so we didn't spend a lot of time out there. I put some lead into a chunk of wood to get a feel for the trigger pull and noise factor. We'll get to paper targets next session which will probably add an element of challenge and interest to it. Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: Count Desmo on December 30, 2008, 08:03:30 PM I'll be spending some quality time at the range within the next few days. Jackie needs to spend a bit more time with her little Taurus, and I want to put a whole lotta .45 rounds through my newest XD. Within a month or so I'll have to break in my new concealed carry pistol, but it's still waiting for me at the shop. :(

Drill Sergeant Joe B. Fricks Rules For A Gunfight RULES FOR A GUN, KNIFE, BASEBALL BAT OR FIST FIGHT 1. Forget about knives, bats and fists. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns. Bring four times the ammunition you think you could ever need. 2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammunition is cheap - life is expensive. If you shoot inside, buckshot is your friend. A new wall is cheap - funerals are expensive. 3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss. 4. If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly. 5. Move away from your attacker and go to cover. Distance is your friend. (Bulletproof cover and diagonal or lateral movement are preferred.) 6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a semi or full-automatic long gun and a friend with a long gun. 7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived. 8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running. Yell "Fire!" Why "Fire"? Cops will come with the Fire Department, sirens often scare off the bad guys, or at least cause then to lose concentration and will.... And who is going to summon help if you yell "Intruder," "Glock" or "Winchester?" 9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun. 10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty. 11. Always cheat, always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose. 12. Have a plan. 13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won't work. "No battle plan ever survives 10 seconds past first contact with an enemy." 14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible, but remember, sheetrock walls and the like stop nothing but your pulse when bullets tear through them. 15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours. 16. Don't drop your guard. 17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees. Practice reloading one-handed and off-hand shooting. That's how you live if hit in your "good" side. 18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. Smiles, frowns and other facial expressions don't (In God we trust. Everyone else keep your hands where I can see them.) 19. Decide NOW to always be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH. 20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get. 21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet if necessary, because they may want to kill you. 22. Be courteous to everyone, overly friendly to no one. 23. Your number one option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation. 24. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with anything smaller than "4". 25. Use a gun that works EVERY TIME. "All skill is in vain when an Angel blows the powder from the flintlock of your musket." At a practice session, throw you gun into the mud, then make sure it still works. You can clean it later. 26. Practice shooting in the dark, with someone shouting at you, when out of breath, etc. 27. Regardless of whether justified or not, you will feel sad about killing another human being. It is better to be sad than to be room temperature. 28. The only thing you EVER say afterwards is, "He said he was going to kill me. I believed him. I'm sorry, Officer, but I'm very upset now. I can't say anything more. Please speak with my attorney." Finally, Drill Sergeant Frick's Rules For Un-armed Combat. 1: Never be unarmed. 2: If you have your hands, your feet, your mind and your Spirit as an American Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine or Coastie, you are never unarmed. 3. I would add "Bringing a Good Jewish Girl" wouldn't hurt either! (http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/bonfygloria/posters/jewishfighter.jpg) (http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/bonfygloria/posters/marines.jpg) (http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/bonfygloria/posters/zombies.jpg) Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: kingbaby on February 03, 2009, 10:32:56 PM Thought I was laughin' my ass off... til i saw the last pic.

General Cosgrove was interviewed on the radio recently. Love his reply to the lady who interviewed him concerning guns and children. Regardless of how you feel about gun laws you gotta love this! This is one of the best comeback lines of all time. It is a portion of an ABC interview between a female broadcaster and General Cosgrove who was about to sponsor a Boy Scout Troop visiting his military headquarters. FEMALE INTERVIEWER: So, General Cosgrove, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base? GENERAL COSGROVE: We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery and shooting. FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it? GENERAL COSGROVE: I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised on the rifle range. FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children? GENERAL COSGROVE: I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm. FEMALE INTERVIEWER: But you're equipping them to become violent killers. GENERAL COSGROVE: Well, Ma'am, you're equipped to be a prostitute, but you're not one, are you? The radio went momentarily silent and the interview ended. Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: nicrosato on October 01, 2009, 09:29:04 AM New York makes it really tough to own a handgun. When we bought the house in ABQ 5 years ago, I shipped Barb's 12 guage Smith and Wesson pump here. Best weapon for home defense- point, don't aim. I went into a gun shop to buy a cleaning kit for it and inquired about purchasing a handgun. I was told that, if I had a New Mexico driver's license, I could walk out with one. In NY, it takes about 6 months minimum, and this is not for a carry permit.
Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: bonfy on October 01, 2009, 01:13:34 PM I want one (12 guage Smith and Wesson pump). When I got my 9 mm here in Colorado last November, I had my New Mexico driver's license so we had to process it through my son who is a resident. It took about 2 hours to get through the background check. I want a shotgun. That's on my wish list for Christmas in case anyone needs ideas. ;)
Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: kingbaby on October 01, 2009, 01:39:11 PM PJ & I both have Mossberg 12's
Great price, dosen't take up much space & will take care of the "Job" I didn't want a show pony gun when it came to blowing people down 3 flights of stairs, so this fit the bill. http://sgcusa.com/Shotguns-Mossberg/c86_101/p2985/Mossberg-500-Pistol-Grip-20%22-12-Gauge/product_info.html (http://sgcusa.com/Shotguns-Mossberg/c86_101/p2985/Mossberg-500-Pistol-Grip-20%22-12-Gauge/product_info.html) Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: Zaster on October 01, 2009, 02:00:53 PM PJ & I both have Mossberg 12's That's what we had before it got stolen (the regular 500 with Accu choke) and we were very happy with it. If I remember right it would hold six rounds after I removed the wood plug...potent home defense device and fun on the skeet and trap range [thumbsup] Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: nicrosato on October 01, 2009, 03:27:02 PM Smith and Wesson had not manufactured many shotguns in its history. This piece is a 916T, which was evidently sold primarily to police departments as a riot gun.

How about a telephone system? I got a few of those. Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: kingbaby on October 01, 2009, 06:13:35 PM [laugh]
Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: nicrosato on October 01, 2009, 06:36:34 PM Have any of you seen the movie "Apaloosa"? I read the Robt. B. Parker novel and the sequel, "Resolution". Virgil Cole's sidekick, the Vigo Mortensen character, totes an 8-gauge, a double-barrel. I bet you could hurt yourself with the recoil.

I'll pass on the pistol grip on that one for sure. Movie was good. characters were great. [thumbsup] Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: nicrosato on October 01, 2009, 06:57:53 PM As they say, the book weas better. I really like Ed Harris as an actor, but he wasn't the Virgil Cole I pictured when I was reading the book.
Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: kingbaby on October 01, 2009, 07:16:05 PM he wasn't the ... I pictured when I was reading the book. I guess thats why people still read books, so they can make "it" anything they want it to be. Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: dusty on October 02, 2009, 06:11:07 AM I think it's always fun to see the movies after reading the books just to compare, but I have to agree, the books are always better (or at least that's the case in my experience).
Just curious (since I didn't read the book and am Ed Harris fan) who would/did you picture as Virgil? [popcorn] Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: nicrosato on October 02, 2009, 08:06:55 AM A taller, dark-haired man. Someone with a more impassive face. Ed Harris is a wonderful actor because he can be so expressive. The Virgil Cole in the novel comes across as a man whose face you can't read, but you always know he's thinking, calculating.
Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: kingbaby on October 04, 2009, 08:37:42 AM I actually thought he did very well, seeing that Tommy Lee Jones & Robert Duval already did their stint in Lonesome Dove.
Hell, you could put Jones in ANY movie I'll show up. And for the record: Vigo was the man in Apaloosa. IMO Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: DRKWNG on October 04, 2009, 08:41:16 AM And for the record: Vigo was the man in Apaloosa. IMO OT I know, but I like Vigo in most of the roles he has played. I really like the way he pulled off his character in Eastern Promises. Title: Re: Show Us Your Pea-Shooter Post by: nicrosato on October 04, 2009, 10:20:32 AM +1 on Vigo, overall and as Hitch in "Apaloosa".

It was with me this last time in Afghanistan, just not with the crew that I went to Bamyan (where that picture was taken) with. |
