Title: 150miles today on a 1100s
Post by: geoffduc on December 17, 2008, 11:44:29 AM
Just got back from a bitterly cold ride into north wales but i'm glowing like the kid on the porridge advert with a grin from ear to ear, [the reason] my 1st ride on the new  [bow_down] 1100s monster. The ride is very relaxing 70mph at 4000revs in 5th and 78mph at 4000revs in 6th with loads of grunt from way down low. The seat to foot pegs was perfect for me but i found the handle bars alittle to far forward for my liking. What a sweat gear box, light and positive, like-wise the clutch and the mirrors, well they actually work, yes you can see the police car following without the usual blurring. It had termi's fitted and boy what a sound, tucked up high at each side of the seat just behind your ears [WOW] especially when riding through a couple of tunnels. The suspension was left at factory settings which i found very comfortable but the small fairing was of little use on a cold day like today with only a light wind but still quite abit of bufferting. The bike had a DP steering damper fitted which made the bike feel really stable but interfered with the ignition lock especially with the thick gloves i used today.Well i hope my rambling's have wetted your appetite i'm certainly smitten so just watch this space  [beer]

BTW i'm retired and like most on the forum a Ducati FAN  [clap] [clap]

Hey, thanks for the ride report. I've been wondering how good the new bike is and have been slowly won over by the looks of the new package. I thought maybe Ducati should have added some more power, but after chasing a friend on an 1100 Multistrada in our North Georgia Mts., I'm a convert to the engine.  Up to something like 110 or 120 mph the engine accelerates very well - that's a really torquey engine.

From the revs at the speeds you quoted I'd be inclined to drop the gearing.  With the 100 horse or so and even more torque the new 1200 2V should make, next years model should be even better - that is it they put the 1200 in the monster.

Hang in there bud. Spring's not exactly around the corner, but it will eventually get here.

Look forward to hearing more as you get use to the bike.

Thanks for the comments and advise LA, the bike in question belongs to my local ducati shop and i'm just putting a few gentle miles on the clock before the young guns get their hands on it. I have written my little report as i can compare it to my hypermotard which is not as smooth as the new monster, which use's  siemens electronic fuel injection.
Spidey,
i'm sorry for the lack of photo's but you will have to excuse me as i'm abit of a dinosar when it comes to computers.  [bang]  If you look on Acc-Mods you will see a photo posted by Carstaphen of my s4rs tricolore in the riding-house post  [moto]

Geoff, Wait a minute...you have a Tricolore....a Hyper....and are demo'ing bikes for the local dealership. I may have to try hard to keep liking you!! On a cool note the local dealership is running a special and will have dropped the price of the Tricolore in the shop by $1250 dollars. It must be the economy. I'm going to be there at 10 AM on Teusday to talk to them about a deal. Maybe merry christmas to me.

GLantern,
what kind of guy would call an old age pensioner a liar just because he didn't post PICS.
Well the truth of the matter is that i don't know too post pics. being a bit of a dinosar, [bang]but i still ride motor cycles so i guess i'm not all bad.  [moto]
Recently i answered a post by Carstarphen requesting info on Riding-House a company in japan and sent him a photo of the product he was interested in. He replied and asked if he could post the photo on the forum and if you go to said post in Acc-Mods you will see the photo of my s4rs. I'm sorry it's not the 1100s but tomorrow i will get my good lady wife to photo me on the 1100s which i will have at home for the xmas holiday and send it to you personally. Hope you will be satisfied, and i can reclaim my dignity  [thumbsup]

GLantern i see you have a 1098, well today i delivered a 1098 zerox rep. to a guy in birmingham (England) and when i arrived at this home this wife photo'd the bike in the van, on the ramp being unloaded and in the road outside his house i felt like father christmas (without the red coat and beard). It's a wonderful feeling when you get that kind of response especially when the new owners are middle aged it must be a ducati thing  [drink]

North Wales = Home of the Traffic Taliban (& the Mad Mullah himself). I would NEVER go there on a matter of principle.

GLantern, oh to be young again, you see i'm a retired old fart that just helps out at the local ducati store to keep from under her who shall be obeyed's feet  [bow_down]. I feel very lucky that the manager has confidence in me that he lets me out in the van and on new bikes but i suppose it helps that i was a test driver for a large motor manufacturer for 28 of my 30 years service with the company. [coffee]
Don't feel envy but just be glad you found ducati's at a younger age than i, because i only bought into them 3years ago and have missed 47years of ducati ownership.

Capo your so right about the Traffic Taliban and the Mad Mullah but some times you have to live life close to the edge (the yanks won't know what the hell we are on about) and just get on the A55 and go for it.

Awesome.  Nice and shiny, just the way I like em.  Wish it came with a little better wind protection to help when riding in the cold.

Thanks Paula i really appreciate your help with the photo's.  [thumbsup]

GLantern the bike is as you say awesome, and today i had another ride out on it and it just seems to get better as the miles mount up. The bike is quite dinky really as i'm only 5ft 8ins so you see it's not that big but boy do'es it feel good (go demo when available). I've got the bike till the 2nd jan. so hope to put some more miles on and on boxing day i'm heading out to a classic bike meeting weather permitting so i'll keep you up to speed with my ramblings.  [beer]

Just finished washing the bike after another 120miles of jingle, jingle, jingling on a cold but dry day over here in England and it just gets better as the miles rack up. At first i wasn't to keen on the lean to the handle bars but as the miles roll on i'm becoming more comfortable with them and the seat has been exchanged for a DP comfort seat which is very good. I'm still keeping to 4000rpm but boy do'es it make speed, i guess you guys will fit a 14t front sprocket which will really make it fly but for this old fella it do just fine with the stock gearing.

Once again Happy Christmas and a joyful Newyear and BTW ride safely  [beer]

Took the bike out on the 26th(boxing day in the UK) to a classic bike meeting, only did 75 miles as it was bloody cold but the bike is freeing up nicely as it now has 410 miles on the clock. I have to return it on the 2nd january so i'm hopeing the weather gets a bit warmer so that i can rack up another 210 miles ready for its 1st service.

Gearhead if you don't like the red or white versions wait a few weeks and have a look at the silver 1100 with silver wheels i know it's not your choosen colour combo but when i saw it at the milan show i thought it looked wicked. The streetfighter definitely looks best all black but it dos'nt ring my bell as i think it looks to bulky.  :-\

=1 on the silver color.  The last edition of the Brit magazines (Ride, Superbike, etc) has a good review of a silver one.  I wasn't a big fan of the new Monster look, but the new 1100 is growing on me.  The silver with a red frame does look really good.  It also looks like ground clearance won't be an issue.  Having been on it already, what do you think Geoff?

Well i think it's the "DOGS" but if you want the best report that i've read get yourself a copy of december 2008 motorcycle sport and leisure in which  [bow_down] Alan Cathcart puts it through it's paces and comes up with one or two interesting comments.
The bike i'm riding is to be the shop demo so with so few miles on the clock i'm taking it easy and with the day time temperature not getting above freezing my little jaunts have been curtailed but i'm quite smitten with the bike so look out bank account.
As you comment labbedds that the gold wheels look good, well yes they do but i find the silver bike with red frame to be a nice alternative to the more usual ducati red but the jury is out on the all black bike.
