Title: s2r800 ---------> s2r 1000/1100
Post by: Labbedds on December 17, 2008, 11:28:03 PM
Ok, so the bug has bitten again.  I love my bike and its set up for me perfectly buttttttt, I want the dry clutch and a bit more power.  I'd really like to find a 1000 or 1100 motor to put in my bike.  How big of a job would this be?  Thanks

Typically, more work than it's worth-just buy the dang bigger bike and steal the bits off the old bike.

Ignore those guys, ship the bike and a briefcase of money to me, I'll fix you up.  [evil]

I had that bug half a year ago - "isn't a 1000 the bike for me?"

The added power was not as impressive in reality as the number would imply, IMO.
Things that will support the upgrade is better brakes, better/adjustable suspension, added power, dry clutch - in that order.
Going from my slightly used 800 to an equal 1000 would cost about $5,000 in my country, it will be much less for you.
It wasn't worth it for me, but for you I'd say yes.

That's the thing, I have a fully adj. gsxr 1000 front suspension with dual tokico's that stops this thing on a dime, my friend who has a s4r rode my bike and is heavily pursuing the upgrade, so next thing is the motor ;)

Do you have a lightened flywheel?  That is a relatively cheap mod (proportionally) and will substantially change how your bike rides.

Couldn't you take the front off the 800 and fit it to your new 1000? Then sell the stock 1000 front? It would still probably be much easier and cost effective to do it that way. Don't know how things are in the US, but here it would be illegal to put a bigger engine than stock into a bike, besides all kinds of serious problems with the insurance, should anything bad happen.

As for the lightened flywheel, I think the purpose is that the engine will rev easier/lighter and provide more engine braking = more "racing". Others will correct me if I got that wrong. Downside is that stalling could become an issue. Sometimes you will have to rev it more to get going. (can't see how that is a problem - ha ha)

It's a long read, but here ya go:  http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=12714.0

For reference, below is a pic of a flywheel.  The pic is not of a Duc BTW.  The flywheel the big metal circular thing in the middle.  It's pretty heavy.  I think a stock Ducati one is something like 4 lbs (that's off the top of my head).  It sits on a shaft on the opposite side of the engine from the clutch.  You can see how if you reduce its weight, that will allow that shaft on which it rests to spin more easily and to change speed--up or down--more easily.

Nice, thanks i"m gonna look into that.  I think if I get the 1000 I'll just switch out my forks and exhaust and sell the 800 stock with the stock 1000 bits.

you should've had nichols throw one in there while you bike was getting serviced!

I did that along with a 14t sproket and it has kept me happy since Feb.

Instead of getting a bigger motor have you tried twisting that thing on the right handle bar  ;D

I'll record my kids banging some pots and pans together and you can put it into your Ipod and get that dry clutch kind of sound for free.....or better yet I'll send you a recording of my old LandCruiser 6 cyl. valve clacking....if you like the open clutch sound you'll love this..... [thumbsup]

That would be great, maybe I'll hook a tamburine up to the side of the bike so i can get that clank clank clank sound.

Come on you can't get rid of your 800, it's in the absolute best color combination ever invented by man and I'm not just saying that because I have the same bike or anything.  I swear it's a totally unbiased observation.   ;D

p.s.  Truthfully I'm kinda antsy to trade in my S2R for the new 1100 when it comes out.   Something about the silver w/ the red frame looks very nice.  Sadly my wife has shot me down on this idea even after I suggested that we keep the S2R as "her" bike and the new 1100 would be "my" bike.

I don't have a wife so I'll have the silver and red before you  [cheeky]  I really like that combination also, but the 696 modded at INDY was sickkkkk.  I like the classic looks of my monster but the new ones ain't so bad either.

Yeah, get the siver and red and whatever else you have your heart set on BEFORE you get a wife.  It's much easier that way.

I was really impressed by my monster when I kept the RPMs closer to the 7000 mark. The power is much different.

Not yet.

Its actually going to Nichols on Tuesday for its 18k... errr  really 25k tuneup =)

I am probably going to keep it unless a nice deal on a smaller Monster comes my way.

I love that dry clutch. WANT.

Dry clutch envy solved in 4 easy steps:

1. Double sided tape.

2. Tambourine.

3. Tape tambourine to clutch cover.

4. Go ride. [moto]  [laugh]

I'm almost due for my 12K and am really torn on whether to do the lightened flywheel...dollar-wise, is it a "smart" mod?

Vindingo, do you noticeably have to rev it more when starting from a stop on the 620?  I don't really like this part of the deal, but I'm assuming the affects on power delivery outweigh this part...

TIA
b.

Just do it!!!  You should also start un-620ing the suspension while it's there.

Dammit...too slow on that auction.  Someone got a smokin' deal though.

The rest of the suspension's still working with my weight.  I need you to focus on project bigger breaks for b.  Mine plus the Circuit 998s sitting around?  Or possibly the CF tail?  Make it happen DS...make it happen!  [evil]

Didn't you say you were scraping hard parts last time?

Hmm...well now that I might be replacing the sprockets with the new chain, this might have to wait.  :-\

Didn't you say you were scraping hard parts last time?

Yup, I did.  But I started hanging off a lot more, which solved the problem for the most part--still catching the toe slider every now and then, which is why I still want to raise the rear.
