The Details:
I will be moving from NC to OR in the next several months. I have an Audi A4 that I will be packing up with the little bit of stuff that I own and driving out there. Because its winter, the roads are bound to be a little slick in some parts of the country and crossing a couple of mountain ranges is required. I will have one other person with me making the trip.
The question:
What would be the cheapest way to get my Monster from NC to OR? Ship it? Trailer? Something I haven't thought of?
Thanks in advance!
Forward Air used to ship a bike for somewhere around $400. I'm not sure about arrangements for pick up and delivery at either end.
I don't think you can get and haul a trailer for that kind of money.
make mother ride it out there [thumbsup]
Bucket brigade, DMF style, with everyone who rides it signing it.
There have to be enough of us here to manage.
Thanks DP. Quote from Forward Air is around 600$.

If Toasty were around, he could make the trip...
I'd ride it out there if the roads weren't possibly gonna be shit. :-\
ETA: Thats actually a really cool idea Dave. I wonder how it'd work out though. Someone ride it from say, Charlotte to Nashville, but how would they get back? Hmmm...
Dunno how much it would cost for the smallest U-Haul truck, maybe that's an option.
But then someone would have to drive the U-Haul POS cross country... not as attractive a concept as the A4.
Van dam trucking. [thumbsup] Specialist motorcycle carrier. Will pick/deliver door to door. Was the official carrier for Norton Motorcycles when they had to haul bikes around the country for shows before they closed their operations.
Or you could use the company I work for which would help us teamsters out a little.......

Cupcake brigade. Ride two. Bring back one.
I'd just hitch up the A4 and buy yourself a little single axle trailer. A good new hitch + install you could dig up for $300 and then just keep an eye out for a trailer for $1-200. Even if you drop a couple more hundred than that, you may as well make it an investment and not just chuck it at a one time shipment. I don't know how anal you are about how the Audi look, but there are some pretty nice hidden hitches to be found. Plus, if you tie down the bike you could always pack a bunch of other shit around it. Having a trailer is indispensible, IMO.
Side note: the bigger the trailer you get, the more shit you're going to try and haul with it. Get a small one that could hold 5/600 lbs tops. Your transmission will thank you.
So in order to attach a hitch to my A4, I have to drill the spare tire wheel wells....
What do you guys think?
Hey, I didn't say I knew anything about the damn things, I just think it would be your best bet :). Plug your car info into this and see what you get.
http://store.uhaul.com/hitches.aspx (http://store.uhaul.com/hitches.aspx)
I think my mom had her hitch installed in her 01 Chevy prism for like $250 and most of them are made to bolt in with a minimal amount of hassle. Couldn't hurt to check it out.

Curt makes the hitches for A4's for about $140. But like I said, they require drilling into the spare tire wheel well.

If your A4 is quattro do not put a hitch on it.
Look up shadowchaser and ask him how to best ship it he's an expert. If he's no longer active on the board, look up silentbob and he'll get him for you.

wow, two pages and nobody has suggested:
www.uship.com (http://www.uship.com)
The ebay of shipping vehicles (and as I found out a few weeks ago, they ship dogs too!)
I used them to ship my bike 2 years ago. Motogpfan used them as well.
Very great service and of course they get ratings in the same way ebay works.
Cheapest and best way to ship vehicles/bikes.

Make sure to wait a while before accepting a bid, I just figured out this last week.
When we were on our honeymoon, we fell in love with this dog at shop in Key West and were trying to figure out how to get him shipped up here.
First bids came in at 900$ and we were like make the beast with two backs that. Well, the dog eventually got bought, so no dice for us.
However, the bids came down to around 375$ to ship a 4lbs dog from Key West to Columbus, Ohio.

Too late now of course, but couldn't you claim the dog as a service pet allowing you to bring it on board a plane?
I swear I've seen some very questionable "service dogs" that look like they're super-pampered and ready for the Westminster Kennel Club show everyday of the year. Looking at the pet's "handlers" and overhearing their often snooty personalities, I'm convinced there's a loophole to bring their dog along with them on board the plane and bypassing the need to ship them.
Oh yeah, back on topic: I've heard several positive comments in uship also.

We actually decided when we got back to Ohio that we wanted the little guy.
We flew Delta, so you can bring a small dog aboard, this was a chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix. Such a cute little bugger.
However, we already have two dogs and decided a third might take away from our two and deemed it not feasible.
Hey Jbubble,
It sounds like you've already got a plan coming together. But I just wanted to mention that I've got an '05 Tacoma pickup I use to take my bike (M696) places all the time, along with all the tie-downs. I live in Houma, LA which is about an hour south of New Orleans. If you give me advance notice I can take a few days off and help move your bike or, if you can figure out a way to get it back to me, you can borrow the truck for a week or two. I've got another car so you wouldn't be putting me out. Just let me know. Good Luck.
I've been moving my bikes in the back of the truck for a few years; it's perfectly safe IMO so don't worry about that. And it'd be cool to actually meet some of the people I've met on this board.

If you can get it to (or near) Memphis before January 3, I can trailer it as far as the bay area for you. I'm home for the holidays, but am headed back out there to start a job in January. Uhauls from Memphis to the west coast are cheap. It's the other direction that's pricey. I am a travel nurse, and I haul my bikes all over the creation when starting a new job. If nobody could pick it up right away or meet me, you'd wanna talk somebody with a garage into storing it for you, though. I'll be living in an apartment, and even though I keep mine under cover and chain, I'd hate to be responsible for somebody else's bike.

ooh, .............. i had friends like that too.
we used to go camping in the bad lands, and naked fire jumping was a prerequisite.

most of us were into streaking too!
we called it werewolfing. [evil]
i still have a vivid mental image of a buddy cuffed and stuffed in the back of a campus police car, naked. he ended up on double secret probation for the remainder of his college career.
we also used to steal stop signs. but it only counted if you got the whole thing, post and all.
So....who has the official roaming S2R?
In theory, it's supposed to end up at my place until Jess can come get it so.....it might help if whoever is bringing it up (Joel? Steve?) gets in touch with me or the wifey.....

ii think it would jsut be better if they showed up some random night about midnight and did a big smoky burnout in the street in front of your house. that way they would get your attn and you would know the bike was there. then parked the bike in your driveway and hopped in a waiting etaway car.
That would work....
....If anyone had ever been to my house before....
.....and if I opened the gate.
what kind of gate are we talking about here?

Wrought iron, probably seven foot tall. Sturdy.
Possibly electrified if I'm bored.

who says i would go through the gate? that's far too obvious. besides, if i come through the gate i'll crash through it in somethign that the electricity won't affect.

i'm throwing the equivalent of maltovs at your house that are filled with spiders.
then videotaping the ensuing hilarity and you freak out and dance around.

Hey I didn't even know this thread existed. I have the roaming Monster in my garage. I was hoping someone might want to take a road trip with me to the bay area one of these weekends. I won't be riding cupcake on the way back so maybe we can put it in Joel's truck, ride up there, spend a weekend, and drive back in the truck.
Presidents day weekend is a three day one...and just around the corner if anyone want to jump the gun.
I'm out of the country Feb 19th-March 3rd or so, and while Paula is around, I'd still like to see some DMFer's if it can be worked into the schedule.
I can probably do that. Hey Joel do you want to make the drive with me?
