Does anyone use the Ducati tool kit? I don't use the helmet lock, because small bolt-cutters could easily cut through it, and I don't know what important emergency repairs you could make with the tools that come in the kit. Given that it weighs around 2 lbs or so, and I'm a weight weenie, I don't ride with it. Am I being foolish? How many of you ride with the kit, or with some type of upgraded kit? Or do cell phones make tool kits in general obsolete?
I use mine for spark plug removal. I've also added an extra set of fuses (recently came in handy), and some zip ties. A buddy of mine threw some candy under the seat too.
i've had to use the tool kit to tighten my mirrors down. also i stopped and adjusted my shifter and rear brake. i would skip a meal before leaving the kit behind. in fact i added 2 or 3 small crescent wrenches to mine. and a crushed can for a puck. i know i'm cheap and may go get a real one this week. but i don't use the helmet cable. i carry my helmet.
Funny, I purchased my bike new (04 S4R) and it never had a tool kit. The particular dealer I purchased it from is known for being shite so it doesn't surprise me.
i got a cruztools kit for christmas. i posted up in the accessories forum.
I don't know about your bike, my kit was laughable.
Andy
I have a 696. Can you really call one wrench "a took kit"?
I recently replaced the seat on my S4R (wore out the old one ;)).
The wife asked me if I was going to move the toolkit onto the new seat?
all I said was "I have a toolkit?" ???
So....no.
Mine gets quite a bit of use actually. What the hell else am I supposed to use to take up space in that cigarbox they call "storage"?
The sparkplug socket is about the only helpful thing that Ducati supplied. Most of the stuff I rely on (or haven't had to rely on yet) is stuff like crescent wrenches, allen wrenches, fuses, etc.
Weight weenies are for cycling, not for motos. If you REALLY want to drop a couple of pounds off your bike, it's going to cost you a ton of scratch. Leaving out the 10 or so ounces of metal from under the seat isn't going to help worth a damn. Hell, that would be like drinking a couple glasses of water then getting on the bike after. It's not as though the kit is particularly convenient anyway, so I cram as much "useful" stuff in there as I can just in case. It will be worth it if I have to use one tool out on the road, once. Take the kit with ya.

Tell that to the guys who've replaced all their fasteners with Ti.
Wanna drop a coupla pounds? Go on a diet ;)
If you call the rod that holds up the tank and the chain adjustment spanner a tool kit? Yes I use mine. But that's all either of my monsters came with.

I don't know how much storage they put in the 4s's, but my S2R's "glove box" is about the size of a cigar box.

That's just my beef! I used to race mountain bikes and I really got into the light weight stuff. On a mountain bike though, dropping 4 ounces makes a lot more difference on a 20 pound bike that it does on one that weighs 400.
Tried the helmet holder once, and used the wrenches on the mirrors before I took them off.

I know. When you asked
"What the hell else am I supposed to use to take up space in that cigarbox they call "storage"? "
I was suggesting you put cigars in the cigar box. ;)
*sigh*
I need a nap.
And that's not a half bad idea actually.
My tool kit consists of my cell phone.
my factory tool kit was a spark plug wrench and a double ended screwdriver that you put the not used end in the handle and you use the screwdriver to turn the spark plug wrench....freaking useless kit for the most part...I put my own kit together for the most part...but it doesn't have everything I've ever needed or might ever want on the road...but I use it.
I got a great hex key roll for Christmas that'll fit perfectly in the cigar box. [thumbsup]

Those guys are such amateurs. :P
I think I used the screwdriver once....
the ittle red bag it all comes in is pretty, at least.

I used mine once too....but not on my bike...I used it to open a can by puncture to alleviate vaccuum for the refried beans to come out at a camp out.
I guess if you embroider stuff on it, it could be a pretty lil bag...maybe put some straps on it and it could hold your credit card and lipstick for a night out on the town!
In the old tool kits, the spark plug tool was also an oil plug hex, so i used it a lot (the other end of the tool)
