Title: Has anyone done this exhaust on a Monster?
Post by: eichh on December 29, 2008, 08:09:45 AM
This is the exhaust of an Agusta F4 model has anyone ever done an exhaust similiar on a Monster. I would really like to attempt it but I have no idea what it might sound like. Perhaps someone has done it already and has a sound clip or a discription as to how they did it. It would be a few bends and a 2 into 4 manifold or a 1 into 2 manifold for each side. Deflective plates could be inside the manifolds to act as a Flowmaster type of muffler. I figured its worth asking and may save me alot of work and confusion if I attempt it.

Norm Brown (motomaxy.com or .net) did a similar one on one of his custom monster-framed Hurricanes a few years ago.  I can't find a pic of it.  He goes by Norm on the DML.  The main problem with an underseat exhausts is that monsters (dunno 'bout the 696 line) don't have enough clearance unless you change the tail and/or the rear suspension.

Someone in Europe did it -- there are pictures from a Ducati World Meetup or something somewhere.

Problem with installing such a system on a Monster is the clearance issue between the top of the tire and the frame itself.

Three options to install:

1) new seat subframe to raise the install height to allow full suspension travel
2) limit suspension travel to maybe 2" so the tire/fender doesn't crash into the exhaust itself
3) build it and see what happens and report to others possibly another solution...

It's a cool look without question!

I've seen a 999 with the MV 4 pipe exhaust.  It was owned by the guy who administered my MSF.  I was new to bikes at the time, so I had no idea how unusual it was.  I wish I had asked him more about it.

the mv agusta f4 exhuast is probably the best looking exhaust there is on a superbike.  it just looks "right"

obviously you can see the 916 heritage when you look at the f-4 and how its a more refined version of even that bike.

great looking bike.

that exhuast should be able to fit on a monster i'm only thinking it should because its a lot thinner than say trying to put termi pipes up there which are probably hang at least another 1-2 inches lower, but then again i have never seen it in person.

The bike that spidey is referring to was Hurricane #1. I think it's currently in my signiture, but I can post a pic if you like. I first tried to use a stock MV exhaust and adapt it but ran into all kinds of problems so I ended up building it from scratch. It involved quite a bit of work to get the clearences right.

That is insane man nice work! [clap] Norm, any chance of getting a sound clip? Are the top tubes the rear pipe and the bottoms the front?

Norm,

You know I'm a fan of most of your work. And I loved this bike for years. And still.
It's magic.  [bow_down]  [bow_down]  [bow_down]

Thanks for the kind words guys. I've never made a sound clip, but it is truely a nice sounding bike. Last I heard, the owner was parting out the whole bike but I don't know the status of the exhaust.

I hope he has a really good reason for parting it out or else he deserves the spoon.
