Title: VH1 top 100 greatest hard rock songs
Post by: JEFF_H on January 03, 2009, 12:50:41 PM
anybody else watch this show this week?

I really enjoyed it.
Most interesting trivia i got from the show...the singer from Survivor is the guy the sings the Bud Real Men of Genius commercials  ;D
2nd most interesting was that Dio invented the rock horns hand gesture that has been seen at every concert since  [evil]

<spoiler if you've got it tivo'd or something....>

what did you think about Welcome to the Jungle being the #1 song?
I was ok with it (glad it wasnt smells like teen spirit), but think that back in black (#2) would have been a better choice for #1.
I thought Iron Butterfly ranked waaay too high, and was surprised there wasnt one Rolling Stones song in the 100 (unless i missed it taking a leak or something)
Also reminded me of some of the great musical bits in songs i havent heard in a long time

Would have liked to have seen Tool in there somewhere....and there must have been some sort of glitch in the scoring system....as Tribute by Tenacious D is clearly the greatest rock song of all time. 8)

I did watch it last night myself as well.

I was pleasantly surprised with Welcome to the Jungle being number 1.  IMNSHO, Appetite for Destruction is one of the greatest rock records of all time and I think that song (while not my favorite, rocket queen is) perfectly encapsulates everything that GNR stood for at the time.

I was watching it last night but somehow missed the last bit.

'Welcome' as #1?
Not a big surprise, probably wouldn't be my pick, but very good all the same.
Back in Black would rank high on my list for sure.

Gotta re-acquire 'Appetite', somehow that disc escaped.

I had forgotten how freaky Twisted Sister was.  [laugh]

I saw twisted sister open for Iron Maiden back when they were the "Vinny Vincent Invasion"

[laugh] [laugh] I know it's been debunked, but rumour was that Vinnie had become Vanessa.

Turns out he's still Vinnie, but still not getting any money from Gene Simmons.  [laugh]

Very difficult to pick the best song.  GNR??  not a chance, but that's not the era where I 'pushed the envelope'.

songs are so important because they remind us where we were at a different time in our lives.

how can you rate someone's memories more than another's??? Trying to be objective as in $$$revenue, or departure from everything else before and it still subjective criteria.

We need a variety of music - becuase we're all different.

Could you imagine where we all liked the same musice??  Nothing different, just the same 10 songs over and over.  nothing to talk about - cause we all have the same opinion.  That'd be hell for me.  I need the variety - even if it's not what I like best, I applaud stations that play the variety - not just the top 10. (steps off soapbox)

I didn't see it this time but I think it was shown one other time.

I think it all depends on your age and what type of music you like.

We all have our favorite song that we would consider the best song ever but someone else might hate it so what does VH1's list prove other than they polled musicians from different genres, generations and other music minded people added up the results and made a list.

The best song ever is the song that you pick for your self.

The song that sold the most copies only means that it was the one that the most people were willing to spend money for.

I know there are a lot of people that spend a lot of money for a certain kind of Caviar. Silly amounts of money . I wouldn't eat any Caviar if it was given to me for free.

When you're young things like what VH1 did seem to have weight to what they have to say. I speak from someone who was young once and thought" Stairway To Heaven " was the greatest , but as I've gotten older I've seen youth for what it is and it's fine but it's not the end all be all.

Although, my favorite Guitarist from 1968 is still going strong today and is still my favorite Guitarist and hardly a day goes by that I don't listen to some of his music from Deep Purple, Rainbow or Blackmore's Night.       Dolph        [thumbsup]
