Title: un-bike related...
Post by: DomDucati on January 05, 2009, 01:50:02 PM
Ok, so this is actually a car question, so you can stop reading if you could care less about that.  Thought I'd throw it out here, though, in case anyone has any recommendations.

I'm looking to get a radar/laser detector custom installed in my car and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of a shop or person that does high quality work here in Houston.  Thanks!  When's the next meet at Rud's?

back in the day I worked at mobile one, and the tech guys then could do 3 piece radar detector in whatever, as i said, though, that was 2001. oh and mind the dog and pony show as everybody works on commission. and I've never spent money at car toys, but I would imagine them to be a better choice. Let's see some pictures btw

I'm getting work done at Katy Coach Works tomorrow, there's a performance shop that's associated with that bodyshop, I'll ask if they do that kind of stuff.  Both shops specialize in european cars, but I'm sure if they can work on aston martins, ferrari's, and the like, your car should be a cinch

It's pretty f-ing awesome.  The Monster is still the bigger thrill ride, but the car definitely does a good job of putting a grin on my face.  Thanks for the suggestions, guys!  I'll throw a pic or two up here as soon as I remember how, lol.

You're putting in a radar detector in your new car?
I can't recommend any specific shops for the work, but would they be able to install one in my ride?  I don't want to get popped by the po-po dragging down Westheimer.  Here's a pic of my baby:

What's up, Chris!

Thanks, Chris.  You headed back this way anytime soon?  Did you finish that house and get it sold?

No luck with Katy Coach Works.  Apparently they don't do radar installs but thanks for the info.

yeah, they do body work, but there's a performance shop next door... doesn't matter, if you're interested, we could install one ourselves..

I just wanted to talk to a professional that may have done them before on a Viper and maybe had some good ideas of how to do it cleanly before deciding.  Me and a dremel cutting up dash pieces, etc. on my own and trying to wiring on that car doesn't like a good recipe.  I have one lead to follow up on before breaking down and talking to Custom Car Stereo.  I want to avoid them merely because of the stories I've heard on price and hit-or-miss work quality there.

If you have the expertise and capability, I am all ears for suggestions.  I can at least trust in your meticulous nature!

did you have a particular radar that you already spec'ed out?

Trying to decide between the Valentine and Passport 9500ix ... plenty of positive feedback for the Valentine.  The reviews for the passport are really good and the GPS functionality sounds pretty useful.  Do you have any thoughts?

I-ve used both. The Valentine is light years better...

oh, I thought you were going to have one of those super fancy systems installed with multiple sensors installed in various locations in the car all attached to a central brain...

If you're just going to hardwire a valentine in, that really shouldn't be an issue

Well, I do want to install them in the manner you are talking about.  I think you can do that with the passport (need to buy that version of the system).  The Valentine I'm not sure you can do that with but you can sort of splice it.  I want a system that has the sensors in the front fascia and in the rear.

Hey Dom, before you send it to anyone else contact Hennessey Performance.
They specialize in Vipers and performance mods for them. I would cut and paste their web link but one of the downfalls of the iPhone. >:(

While it's there maybe you could go for the 1000 HP upgrade! [evil]

I am afraid to be tempted by any Hennessey mods... I might end up sleeping out of that car with no house but 1000hp to lull me to sleep.  I'll check them out and see if they have anything remotely reasonably priced.
