I was on vacation recently when someone in my apartment building sent me an email. He said that someone had snuck into the underground parking garage and was trying to break into the vehicles to steal gas, including my 916. I told him to put the cover back over it, and today I had a look. Not only had he got his grubby mitts onto the gas cap (he didn't get past the lock, thankfully), but he tried to take off the fairings and swiped three of the Dzus fasteners in so doing. I think he was trying to locate a fuel petcock to cut the fuel line and drain the gas from the tank. Thankfully the moron didn't find the fuel line.
With gas at 70 cents a litre or less, what kind of make the beast with two backstard would pull this kind of BS? Not only that, but the garage has more than one camera on each floor, with big signs posted to say so. I doubt the cameras made much difference anyway, it was probably some greasy hobo looking for a quick buck, or a call to the police so he could spend a cold winter night in a warm jail cell.

That sucks. Doesn't sound like they messed up your bike bad though. Dzus fasteners shouldn't be that hard to source. Did they mess up the fuel cap at all?
They tried to get into the cap (the tab was flipped up and it was covered in handprints) but they didn't succeed. There was still gas in it. I'm glad they didn't find the fuel line and slash it (it's hidden under the airbox), that would have been a real pain in the ass.
Well at least they didn't damage anything. That sucks altogether though.
I guess the dumbass didn't realize that if you're gonna steal gas, a motorcycle isn't the best vehicle to target anyway.

Well that blows, but I am glad to hear they didn't mess up the bike. And, things could have been worse. Your spark plugs may have been stolen to be used to smoke drugs (http://www.craigslist.org/about/best/sfo/27499971.html).
I am pretty sure a homeless guy stole my seat cowl. For what purposes, I don't know. My theory is that he is using it as a hat.
If he had succeeded, the joke would have been on him. I only have about 3 litres in there (I didn't bother filling it before winter storage).
I talked to the concierge today, he told me the guy was in the garage for 4 1/2 hours. He was in there from 3am to 7.30am, with at least one nap during that period. All caught on tape. Someone dropped their keycard on the street and that's how he got in. Not only did he dick around with the cars, he stole a mirror off another bike, broke into the electrical junctions, played with the firehoses, and generally acted incredibly weird. He didn't steal much, aside from a few CDs and a remote unit to open the door (the codes have since been changed). For example, he broke into the Citroen parked next to my bike and left electrical parts scattered on the seat - but left behind valuable stuff like a stereo amp. Our best guess is he was seriously make the beast with two backsed on drugs, because nothing he did made any sense.

Neuf, get yourself one of those rotor locks with a motion detector on it. They have a 105 db alarm and will freak out anyone who touches the bike, plus they are not very noticeable so the creep has no idea where the sound is coming from. THey are great! I used on on my bike when I lived in NYC and it kept people far away -- if they touched the bike, it would chirp at them. Any more shakes and blammo, alarm city:

+1 on the rotor lock, I use one on my monster and don't really worry about it. I just bought a knock-off on E-bay from china or something for about 20 something bucks, works just as well as the Xenas do. Also, don't worry about accidentally leaving it on the bike and "riding off with it on there and wrecking" just make it a habit that it is the first thing you do (take it off) when you get to your bike. I've never forgotten it. Lots of people wraned me about that, but it really isn't a problem, of course you could also get one of those bright orange cords that go from the lock to your handlebar as a reminder.
The Doc
I used to sell those locks. I hate them with an almighty passion. Someone would set off the display unit in the shop at least two or three times a day. That screeching wail haunts my dreams to this day. I have an alarm system installed on the bike, but it is disabled during winter storage (no battery in the bike). I don't expect alarms to make much difference in Montreal, it's one of those things that people don't pay attention to.
