Title: Dakar rally
Post by: Bun-bun on January 06, 2009, 04:25:50 PM
Tuned in to the Dakar rally tomight. . . and almost fell out of my chair. After being cancelled last year for "safety reasons"(Pussies!) They're running the race this year in Argentina and Chile.
WTF!
How can you call it the "Dakar" if it doesn't get within 4000 miles of Dakar?
First the economy, then the presidential race, now this. . .
I'm going back to bed, call me when the world makes sense again.

Still got some cool off road racing action. Did you see the car barreling through the sand and almost running over the bikes?  :o

Yeah, O.K., but think about it.
They have the Baja 1000.
They hold it in Baja.

They have the Indy 500.
They hold it. . . at Indy.

They have the 24 hours of Le Mans.
They hold it at Le Mans.

They have the Paris-Dakar rally.
It starts in Argentina and ends in Chile?????

i'm just happy they are holding it this year. eventually maybe we will get more than 30 min of coverage on TV that isn't a day late in the US.

I'm not going to hold my breath. They even have Robby Gordon running in it and he's a NASCAR veteran, but still no coverage.

it seems like most of the 30 min dedicated to the dakar on VS is spent on him.

i'm not holding my breath, but i do hold hope that it will be better some day.

it's an american-company (http://blinkproductions.com) produced program, for an american station, so there's no surprise that he gets a little extra coverage.

i know why he gets the coverage, i was merely pointing out to superjohn that a good chunk of the coverage that is provided follows gordon.

they are also following jonah street, though there's not nearly as much coverage of him. they focus on the big names on bikes, but always mention where street is and how he did.

NPR is reporting on the Dakar.  There has been a death.  A French rider was found today with no signs of life.

The report also talked about why the race is not is Dakar.

If you want a bit more coverage, Gordon uploads dailies to you-tube under an account called bobby-chuck or something like that.

I'll second the notion that it's better to have it in a new place than not at all.  I'm sure they put together an equally difficult race.  There's a whole lot of nothing down in Argentina and Chile.  And everyone has known it since last year's got canned.

i'd be really interested to know what the cause of death was. he had food and water nearby.

maybe it was exposure? any idea what the temp was that night?
