Title: Help - web browsing phones
Post by: DCXCV on January 07, 2009, 10:08:59 AM
So I think I want to get a touch screen phone for browsing/e-mail/IM - all that crap.  Also get a good Verizon discount through my company and I think they have the best service in my area, so...

What phone?  Blackberry Storm? LG Dare?  Samsung Omnia?  something else?  any and all opinions (related to the topic) are welcome.

I have a Blackberry Storm. I don't like the browser that comes with it so I downloaded Opera mini for free. It works much better.

Still, the phone is very buggy. It randomly shuts itself down every three days or so and the screen gets wonky sometimes.

I have a Blackberry Pearl and have also downloaded Opera Mini.  Its a pretty kickass browser and much better than the one that comes stock.  I do not have nearly the same amount of trouble as Jbubble does.  I used to but it went away when I stopped using the phones original browser.

I've been disappointed with every touch screen phone I've tried.  They all seem to be big, buggy, slow, and have terrible battery life.

I love my Blackberry Pearl.

I have a palm centro

it is ok

stock browser is better than dial up

I also downloaded Opera mini but palm lost the contract with IBM for some java thing to make it work  [bang]

battery life is below par

and it rarely dials out on the first try

I have a LG voyager, its like the dare.

first, the good stuff.

I don't mind the size so much because I like the keyboard, Its great for texting. I do also really like the Vcast tv stuff, touch screen actually works pretty well, Call quality is great, and I get a signal in places my other phones never did, and works really well with bluetooth headphones for listening to music. I don't use my MP3 player nearly as much since I got this phone. the Navigation thing actually works really well and has saved my ass a number of times, but its a bit pricey. The data plan costs less then the blackberry, but its also no nearly as good.

Now for the bad.

the battery sucks absolute ass, one day of normal use and its DEAD. The browser, is TERRIBLE. I wish I could install something like opera mini (I really like Opera on my PC's, stomps the crap out of IE, FF and Google chrome.) the screen on the inside is very easily scratched by the keys. It's also a little on the heavy side. The ringer is almost impossible to hear unless its something loud and annoying, due to the speakers being on the inside.

over all, it does what I need, but maybe not everything I want.

I have a Palm Treo 700wx.  I have no real complaints except for syncing issues with my computer.  Other than that it dials great, have great service (sprint), fast internet.  If you decide on a treo make sure the OS is windows and not palm, the palm os is old and crap.

I have a Blackberry Pearl as well and it has been pretty reliable (even after having a beer spilled on it by someone else).

The biggest issue is that occasionally the trackball gets a little funky (left, right and up will work for me, but not down), probably after some grit gets in there.  After a while it seems to sort itself out again.

Blackberry Curve.  With Opera Mini 4.2, it is a great phone.  I would recommend it but it isn't touchscreen.

This looks interesting. Taking some of the best of all phones plus a couple very cool features (wireless charging)
