Title: Life Expectancy of Stock 696 Battleaxes
Post by: golgofett on January 08, 2009, 02:16:19 AM
Has anyone run through there stock tires yet.  I am curious how many miles these may get before needing to be replaced.  I use my bike for commuting mostly so the centers of mine will probably wear quicker.  I have about 1400 miles but they are still looking good.

Which Battlax's are stock?  The ones that were on my Bandit 600 made it about 5500 ~

And the ones on my S2RD went 9k rear, 12k front... Every rider will wear tires a little differently. I mostly commute with the occassional twisty romp. Figure you'll need to replace around 6k as a placeholder, less if you do lots of track time.

I don't think I ride abnormally fast or furious, but I get no more than 2500 usually and they're done for.   [bang]

I've used so many tires in 30,000 mi. I'd have lost count, except that I keep up with the mileage.

3K mine and fine. Course, I don't have any really twisty roads around here and haven't been on the track yet - will hopefully do my 1st track day this spring.

Jebus LA...

Like RBX said, YMMV.  Though my tires have been Pirelli, I rolled out 10k on my rear and probably could have gone a bit longer.. but I was 500 miles from home and hitting the wear bars.  And I don't baby my bike... I try to be smooth on the throttle but I don't spare the horses as it were.

battleaxes on my S2R are in okay shape... it's a 2006 with 4500 miles on the clock. i'm replacing them this spring, but they have a good amount of life left. especially the front. rear is a little squared off...

Also depends on how much wear is on your tire before you replace them.
Some people run their tires bald or square before they get new ones....

I replace mine early as it is cheap insurance...and new tires feel so nice  8)

(and not to turn this into a new tire thread...but I just tried some Avon Storms for the first time and really like them...should be good on the 696 too)

We use tyres quite heavily........the 2008 696 OE Bridgstones (which are out of production now)  lasted us about 3300 miles. The front still had some life in it but as we replaced with Pirelli Supercorsa Pro we changed the set. The Supercorsa give more grip and have lasted about the same.  I would hope 'normal' use would get another 1000-1500 miles from a set!

The really bad news for us is that 3300 miles is about 2 to 2.5 weeks..........

4600 miles on my 696 - mostly freeway commuting and they still look good.

I've got ~2500 miles on my 696, 2000 commuting & 500 fun. The front is fine, the rear is squared off. I would think about 4-4.5k I'll be getting some dual compounds to replace them.

The 696 stock tires I bellieve are the BT56's. I've got about 5300 mi on mine, with about three quarters of that on twisties, and it looks like they have plenty of meat left. But an important consideration is that I weigh about 135lbs -- heavier riders will use up their tires faster. So for my weight and the way I use my tires I'm guessing they'll last around 7,500 - 8,500.

Well, searching thru threads for tire replacement suggestions in fact when stumbled on this thread.  ironically closing in on 5K on my 09 696 stocks and getting well squared, but worse is level of wear on tread.....we do a LOT of fast n hard riding twisties (yes even in FL they DO exist  [laugh] )  and some commuting in between so still plenty left, ashamed to admit honestly, on sides but center of rear is looking scarey honestly.  Prolly have few hundred safeISH miles left on rear, but after hitting rear brake lil too hard and doing bit of a fish tale as result, not keen on pushing it any longer.

Off now to find a thread on sport/touring suggestions for bike....want something to take to track then wear down on streets after.

i got 3200 off my stock 696 tires never spun the rear tire, but mine went from squared off to showing chords in a very short time. Replaced both with BT016 weather went to shit havent been able to test the new tires....
A very agresive sv1000 rider i know who has tried a wide range of tires eats up tires in under 1700 miles he has got over 2500 on his BT016 and they still look great. Thats what pushed my purchase.

Similar issues myself now at about 3700 miles. Don't think I quite have to change the rear yet, though.

Had the 56's on my 695.  Got to 8,500 on the first rear and caught a nail (it was very squared) And i think I changed the front at 12k and the second rear at 17 or 18k.
Since switched to Pilot Power 2Ct's which are doing well.  I'm at 23k and only on my 2nd front and 3rd rear tire with mostly commuting and a healthy dose of twisties.

About 5k usable on mine, went to 6k and was showing thread...  They squared off pretty quick, around 2k.  Mostly around town riding and twisties on the weekends.  Got a Pirelli now, dont like it so much, it feels funny in turns...

Update and WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JUST after my last post in here, literally next ride on Monster, was LAST for those tires!!  The warning is those last FEW MILES, as little as 40 or only as much as 100 TOPS, WILL decieve you!!!!
THOUGHT I had plenty wear left....went out to ride a 80+ mile round trip, inspected tires of course and found a LITTLE bit of wearing thru showing the "white" on rear, in one small place.  Decided to make trip anyway, which was all slab btw.
Arrived at destination and upon inspection became REALLY unsure I would make it back home. Just 40 miles on them so far since last check.  Obviously, decided to ride home, carefully and it was MOST unnerving ride on any bike evar. Could FEEL the instability worsening mile-by-mile.
Pulled off after interstate and majority of trip back home for inspection again RUH-ROH!  Called SO to update.  There were tiny SHREDS coming off everywhere AND could see the "white" almost all way round rear tire now.  WOW, that went FAST!
Made last 5 miles home SLOWLY (which is VERY hard as we know lol)   n parked til replaced rear.

I only replaced rear so far (economy/finances) and went with Dunlop Sportmax...idea here is, we do mostly street riding (errands thru week, fast n hard Sunday twisties) and only plan on few and FIRST track days in next few months.....chose this tire to get longer wear until front needs replaced and THEN I will replace both with nice track/street tires of course.

Thought I would update and post warning here tho...if you THINK the wear is near the end, be SURE to check/inspect OFTEN, as often as every 20-40 MILES ONLY EVEN!!!!!!!!!!   Oh, and on this ride, JUST turned 5K miles btw.

Ride safe all.

When you see the tread wear bars even with the surrounding rubber you are done.  When you see white you are past done.  That goes for any tire.

I'm at 10,700 with mine on my 695, but they've been toast for a while.  Very squared off and lots of slippage.  I should have changed them out at about 9,500 miles.

Yup.  I went from even with wear bars to showing a little cord in a less than a week of 7 mile round-trip commutes.  We'd had a good weekend of riding hard, and I had *almost* toasted my rear riding rather aggressively 2-up.  Thought I'd get a couple weeks of commuting in on it before I had to replace.
