Title: My dead Nikon - What do I replace it with?
Post by: Slag on January 12, 2009, 06:26:12 AM
As you may have read, my D50 hit the ground yesterday at a high rate of speed.  Losing the camera body isn't that big of a deal. What really hurts is the lens. I loved that lens!!

The real question what to replace it with. Catie already has the D300, so I am leaning towards the D90. Then again he D80 is CHEAP!!  I do not know if I really want o put a $1000 camera and a $700 lens in my tailbag.  Any recommendations from the pros here? Should I get the D90 and not look back?

Here is our dearly departed D50  :'(

How did it fall out if it was zipped up in the tail bag? Just curious. Nikon is a camera, right? [laugh]

I MAY have forgotten to zip the bag at our last stop  [bang] [bang]

This would be a question for Scott since I have Canon gear - I am just amazed that it held together as much as it did !  That is a real testament to Nikon's legendary toughness.  Arlington camera may have something gently used that would be a better ( cheaper ) tail bag camera in case of future disasters.

If you were able to get the memory card out and get your pix off of this then that is pretty amazing. You might write to Nikon and tell them the story ( like an endorsement ) and see if they are moved to offer you a discount somehow !  This is unlikely due to hard economic times - but you never know - they might like to produce an ad showing a cool couple and their cool Ducs who are happy they got their pix out of a Nikon that hit the pavement.

If it were me - insurance would cover it - but Canons that hit pavement at high speed become glitter size pieces and you ususally don't get your photos out when that happens!  Good luck!

PS.  I know Fastwin has heard of Nikon because they make rifle scopes !!  [laugh]

Oh crap! Didn't know it was operator error. Sorry to hear that. Thought maybe something broke like a strap, etc. Damn! :P That really sucks.

The memory card is the most amazing part of the story.  It was 20 yards away from the camera parts and relatively unscathed  :o  The camera was insured so I will be filing a claim today  [thumbsup]

Wow, didn't even know that you could insure cameras. Pretty neat.

We got an accident protection plan when we bought it. It was kinda pricey but looks like it was worth it  [thumbsup] The lens pictured was not covered, but the other lens that was in the bag was.  Total claim will be around $1k  :-X

Bad news. The replacement insurance has lapsed. Apparently March of 2008 was a long time ago.

Good news. A D700 may be in my future  [thumbsup]

No more SLR's in the tail bag. Going to buy a point&shoot.

We picked up one of these shockproof (6.6ft), crushproof (220lb), water resistant (33ft) Olympus 1050 cameras a couple of years ago for travel use.  Not a bad option for a bike environment, and there are a few more models available now.

I've played around with it some and have some good books on the subject. It's pretty easy to get the captures as long as you bracket to include the entire tonal range and keep the aperture consistent so the depth of field doesn't shift on you. There's quite a range of software available to "tone-map" an image for print or display purposes and that's where it can get tricky.

I'll give you a shout the next time I do one if you're interested.

do you like that camera?  I have a Sony and it's taken a beating plus I'd like to mount to my handlebars to see the crazy's on video.

Love it.  It has traveled all over and only one issue.  The best part is it's that it is waterproof.  It was in the rain in Le Mans and still took good pictures of all of the normal travel spots.   Took it snorkeling in Mexico, and have taken it skiing...  Never have to worry about.  They have a bunch of settings to adjust for all the different lighting/activities.

Pictures are good, and it does ok videos, for a small camera, for those times you just don't want to carry a video camera too.

The only issue I have had was that I scratched the screen sometime last year, and it is hard to see from the screen in the sun (even before the scratch).

If I lost it, I would go out and buy another one without a second thought.

I hear the canon SD880IS is pretty top notch for a point and shoot.

:) The new Canon G10 is mind boggling incredible - but if you are driving all Nikon I would not mix in one Canon just because it's better to keep it simple and familiar as regards software!  :-\   [bacon]

Yep.  Glock 22.

As far as the camera, I haven't even looked at them yet.  May do that tomorrow.

I've had a Lumix FX9 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicfx9/) for a few years and love it for what it is. It's about 2" x 3.5" so I can throw it in my pants pocket if I wanted to and not even notice it's there.

or if i wanted to burn $400...this:  http://www.uncrate.com/men/gear/digital-cameras/casio-exilim-exfc100/  and http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001OTZR22/ref=nosim/uncrate-20

or maybe i'll just stick with lumix.  jim likes his too he says.  forget which model he said he had out at trackday...but he took good shots with it.

One of the other nice things about my particular Lumix is the the almost non-existent shutter delay. That was one of my requirements when I bought it. It had to be tiny and NO FREAKING shutter delay.

dpreview (http://www.dpreview.com) is a great site for camera shopping. Very in-depth reviews.
