My buddy just drove his 2001 750 sport about 400 miles and it leaked about 1/4 quart on the trip, all from the bottom of the vertical head, where it connects to the crankcase.
He is going to get the valve adjustment soon, since it's at 7500 miles already (!) and we're wondering if this leak will be cured by the valve adjustment with a new gasket?
Thanks.
Is the leak from a valve cover or the base of the cylinder or maybe somewhere else? If it is anything but a valve cover leak the answer is no. If it is the famous base gasket leak the cylinder has to come off. Either way, the shop doing the work has to be told about the problem first.

It is definitely at the base of the cylinder. Is this an expensive/time consuming project on the 750 sport? It seems like the motor pretty much drops right off the frame, but understandably there's likely a lot of leg work to get the cylinder head off of the crankcase.
It is a big job, a better part of the day at least. The job can be done with the engine in the frame on a monster, I dont know how much of a Super Sport needs to come apart. Do check the breather first. They can leak and make a big mess.

The black piece with the hose on it is the breather. Yours may not be black.
His mechanic had us check the breather and we purchased RTV Ultra Black silicone in hopes of handling the breather, but upon inspection, the breather was clean and it was obviously coming from the bottom of the head.
Bummer. Maybe we'll double-check the breather to insure that's not the case.
thx
As I recall, the motor has to be dropped a little to get the vertical cylinder off an SS. None of the work is very difficult if you have some experience and tools (or a buddy), but it is pretty time consuming, and at $50-80/hr........................
