Title: 696 CORED PIPES DONE! Post by: hcomp on January 17, 2009, 10:53:30 PM We just finished coring the stock 696 exhaust cans... It will probably not be a home job unless you have a ban saw and a mig or tig welder. We removed the outer aluminum cover and dissected the cans into 3 pieces. The catalytic converter is in the first part of the can and then there is a two chamber piece that contains three pipes with the center pipe being the final exhaust outlet. It is a bit different than coring the S2R or 695 pipes. You must cut this pipe to gain access to anything. We ended up completely removing the baffle, but left the small exhaust outlet to keep some back pressure. It sounds drastically different! A bit louder and much more throaty! I am getting a third set of stock exhaust this week and I am going to perfect a medium level coring. I will post some pics of the procedure and also the sound file so you can hear the difference. I am also having the aluminum skins anodized black and I will pick those up Thurs.

Title: Re: 696 CORED PIPES DONE! Post by: LA on January 18, 2009, 07:30:37 AM Love to see some pics of the cut open cans.
IMHO, if I were going to go to the trouble of cutting the cans I want the end product to be a can with a whole the size of the exhaust pipes going straight through the can. ;D LA Title: Re: 696 CORED PIPES DONE! Post by: DucinKtown on January 18, 2009, 08:19:03 AM [thumbsup]
[coffee] [drink] Can't wait R Title: Re: 696 CORED PIPES DONE! Post by: hcomp on January 18, 2009, 11:40:51 AM Okay here is a quick mp3 of the difference between the stock and the cored exhaust. We will have a video when all is done. Pics will be up tomorrow of the process. The first part is stock idle then stock w/ rev. Second part is cored idle and w/ rev.

You could weld a washer in the middle of the pipe so that you could not see it. Then you could get away with a larger outlet. Title: Re: 696 CORED PIPES DONE! Post by: Raux on January 18, 2009, 12:04:56 PM none of the aftermarket pipes have the backpressure issue?
Title: Re: 696 CORED PIPES DONE! Post by: hcomp on January 18, 2009, 12:10:19 PM Well, if you do remove back pressure, you might have to re tune the bike. Although with a lambda sensor, the computer should be able to compensate a little bit. I may try to do a bigger straight pipes and outlet and see what the exhaust color and plugs look like after a short time.

Title: Re: 696 CORED PIPES DONE! Post by: BastrdHK on January 18, 2009, 12:39:59 PM Does sound better.....has funky metallic twang at the end of the rev or is that the recording device?
Title: Re: 696 CORED PIPES DONE! Post by: hcomp on January 18, 2009, 05:32:25 PM That metallic sound is from the audio program used to convert it to mp3.
Title: Re: 696 CORED PIPES DONE! Post by: zLoki on January 18, 2009, 06:43:33 PM That sounds fantastic... Too bad it's not a home job, would love to do it.
Getting the covers off, is that hard, would like to anodize/ceramic them black. The rattle can method works great for a couple of months, hate to keep doing it... Have you tried hi temp paint.....lots of guys have used BBQ grill paint with success. Title: Re: 696 CORED PIPES DONE! Post by: zLoki on January 18, 2009, 07:58:27 PM Have you tried hi temp paint.....lots of guys have used BBQ grill paint with success. Oh yeah, it works great but has not held up to rocks and stuff that the road throws at you. They still look great from about 5 feet (after 4 months) but I can see them needing a new coat in a few more months. I have not used the BBQ paint, used stuff designed for headers instead. Maybe on the next paint job I'll give the BBQ stuff a shot, thanks for the tip. Title: Re: 696 CORED PIPES DONE! Post by: DucinKtown on January 18, 2009, 10:18:36 PM Wow. great sound!!!
Title: Re: 696 CORED PIPES DONE! Post by: hcomp on January 18, 2009, 10:41:11 PM The aluminum covers are not hard to get off. The technique is simple....Take the cans off the bike and remove the brackets. Then hand a friend a large rubber mallet and you hold the aluminum cover with both hands. Have your friend hit the pipe as hard as he can....Boom comes right off. I tried taking them off by myself with little success. I am having mine anodized black and if you do decide to go that route, make sure you do a type II hard anodize. It will last longer and will not fade as fast. I am picking mine up Thursday so I will post some pics of the finished product.
