Title: 2009 the year of tests
Post by: Grampa on January 18, 2009, 11:36:36 AM
this is a test...... this is only a test

first I get laid off

then the downstairs floods

then the garage door breaks

now.... the 1098 is drinking if own fluids.

I get on the bike to go for a ride.   no oil.

no leaks to be found, and it does not smoke, or smell of anything funky from the exhaust.

shit shit shit >:(

Ride the Monster. When you return, have a  [drink] and deal with it then.   [thumbsup]

I think I'll just do yard work.

The joys of riding have left the building.

Is it just low on oil BP?

Your factory installed super capacity oil reserve sump just popped its cherry, and is now functioning to provide the peak performance for your engine.  This required just enough oil to make your "low oil" warning come on.

It'll get better BP. I too lost my job, but figured out a way to attend school  on my GI Bill, get unemployment and make more than I did when working.

I hope the 1098 isn't terminal.

I wish it were that.

I sanded on wood for most of the afternoon.

Michelle brough home a "corner" desk that she had over at her ex's house. We plan on re-doing Ethans room, so I worked on removing the  blue and grey paint that covered it, sanding off everything to the bare wood. I stained the lower a deep red, and set up a base coat of black paint on the top. Tomorrow, I'll lay another coat of black, and when that dries, I'll work on making it look like carbon fiber.

By the time it's done.... I should have a new attitude  [laugh]

That whole post could've been condensed to "I'm getting high off lacquer".

Hey BP.

I've heard of two things that might be causing the issue:

On the different 1098 forums, I have seen a report of one poor sap who had to have his bike torn down at his own cost before the problem was found, and it turned out to be an issue with the pistons and rings on the engine.

A couple of other people have reported that their 1098's have had the horizontal pistons replaced due to excessive wear caused by the pistons not being properly hardened at the factory.

You might want to have a compression test and a leakdown test done on your bike, and if you get bad results, take the bike to the dealer, and have them do the test also, and go from there.

Won't take much more than an hour or so for you to do the tests yourself.

BC.

The bike is under warranty, so they'll be tearing it down. It also has two recalls that need to be done on it.

I plan on trucking it up to Modesto tomorrow  and leaving it with them.

The bike has been delivered to the dealer (Modesto Ducati)

They say that there have been reports of a few 1098 models that had the "A" piston placed in the "B" spot, causing premature ring failure, and they all kinda happen around the same milage as mine. So, they plan on doing compression tests, and if all goes  as planned, I should see the bike back in a couple of weeks.

And...... I got to see their Monster Challenge bike in person... looks  much better in person than in the posted pics. Me likey [thumbsup]

Seems we're in the same boat, man.  :-\

Mine started with the layoff in October and just got worse from there. I'm gainfully employed again, but so many things since are really getting me down....

big hug (in a manly way)  [beer]

as GB says...... failure is only the set-up for the next success.

it's had to see the goodness in things when you're up close in it... just add a lil time, and your perspective changes.
