Howdy all,
Will some one here please enlighten me on what is the best way to darken the termi exhaust tips like this:

Ceramic coated, powder coated, or Duplicolor high temp ceramic rattle can maybe?

Will I have to separate the tips from the cans in order to have it coated?

I am no help at all but thats a nice bike...

High temp paint should work.

If you look around, you'll find that others have done this...not necessarily on the 696,  but on several other models.

To do a nice job, you'll have to drill out the rivets, perhaps cut the end cap from the internal pipe, and paint with high temp paint.  Since the tip is unlikely to see a lot of road debris, high-temp paint should be sufficient.

You could prob. get away with some serious masking (with painters tape) rather than tearing apart the mufflers..
Dupli-color logo gloss engine enamel would be perfect for this (lots of light coats)..

If you do try it, use a proper high-temp chip-resistant product, some emery cloth to scuff up the surface of the stainless, and rubbing alcohol before the first coat. Then put six thin coats on them and put them in the oven for a couple of hours @ 150 degrees or so. I did this with the sleeves on my cored stockers and they have held up like iron, but they are aluminum. I'm assuming the tips are stainless as they are on my Termi carbon cans. Rivet gun can be had for ~$12(I borrowed one,and the rivets too). Try it out.

I will most likely have to remove the tips in order to have it done exactly like the ones in the picture. It seems like the brackets was also darken but not the rivets itself; that proves who ever did it had to remove the tips from the cans. Besides, I don't want to put the whole can in the oven  [puke]..... can I? ???

Hopefully I don't have to cut or weld anything..... please tell me i'm right?! :-[

Yes, Sleeper I you can put the cans in the oven at 150. Remember, to make an exhaust out of carbon the epoxy that they use usually must be heat treated at 350 for 2 hours.  Also your exhaust will easily reach that under normal riding conditions. 

Just drill the rivets out (very easy to do only takes a few seconds each) the send the pieces you want to get coated (or do it yourself if you like), then reassemble and re-rivet the straps onto the end caps. It is a really easy job if you take your time and do it right!

I would definitely not mask things and try to do it all together as I don't think you'll end up with a high quality final product - I think it will look like it was masked and painted while still together!

It looks like that personal had the straps and hangers coated as well - this is what I'd do - all the parts not just the cap!

I have been thinking of doing this with my termis also. I have used a pop rivet gun in the past many times. But the rivets on the termis look different than what you can get at the local home depot. Anyone have a part number or source for the rivet with the slight dome like the ones on the end cap?

There is no specific part number listed for the rivets on Arco - they don't break the parts down that far... just into individual pieces. Maybe check an aircraft supply shop online and see what they have in the way of rivets. I can't imagine they are anything too special though I've never really looked that close.

It'll be a little time consuming due to getting all the right tools.. borrowing a drill, buying some high temp paints, rivet gun, and rivets.  Now I'm sure I can carry this out. Thank you all for enlightening me.  [beer]
