The USA 696s come with one attached, check for it on the throttle side of the bike, just below the tank in the frame.
[roll] Here we go again. Wrong section buddy! [roll]

where'd you buy your bike? i think certain dealers are doing that as part of dealer prep, but it's not standard as far as I know.
BUT...
to answer the OP.
1) Remove the seat
2) Remove the billion allen screw holding the tank panels on.
A) those on the top are easy to see
B) there are two at the front near the steering tube (have to turn the bars side to side to get those)
C) there are two on the side of the panels near the bottom
D) there are two on the back of the panels where the seat meets them (don't loose the washers)
3) Slide the side panels off (they are notched, slide it back then out)
4) Remove the top center panel (no need to remove the back center panel)
A) underneath this panel there are two tubes connected to the tank. unhook them now. they are the fuel overflow and vapor vent hoses.
5) On the side of the tank there is a bolt (sometimes 2) holding the tank to the frame.
6) Remove the Allen bolt Underneath the seat area (have to squeeze between the rear hugger and bottom of the bike)
While here make sure the wiring is not clipped to the tank. I ended up cable tieing the wiring to the frame clip instead.
7) Gently lift the rear of the tank up then back a bit
8) wiggle the tank back out of the rubber grommets holding the tank on the sides.
IMPORTANT DO NOT GO TOOO FAR BACK. Just enough to get the tank out of the grommets.
9) Slowly lift the tank at the front to one side. (make sure to put a cloth on your frame to protect it from the metal prongs on the tank)
You will not be able to take the tank totally off unless you unhook the fuel lines. Just set it aside to get to the battery.
Raux,
Thank you, thank you, thank you. That is so much more helpful than just saying I put this post in the wrong place! Is it true that many 696's only have one of the frame side screws? Oops! I guess that question is in the wrong place too. Dang! [bang] Oh, and I bought my bike used, so no dealer prep for me, and I guess the original owner I bought it from didn't get it either. But hey, a 2009, with 830 miles on it when I got it, 20 months left on the warranty! Woo hoo! (the warranties ARE transferable aren't they?)

Yes but only if you tell Ducati (both corp and NA). Send them an email with your info, VIN, copy of pink slip and they will promise to send you a welcome packet (but I'm still waiting on mine, +5 months)

don't worry the mods will move this shortly to the correct location.
everyone i have talked to about it has one screw, except i have heard some dealers are putting a second on... i don't see a need as the rubber grommets are tight so there won't be any vibration and one screw is sufficient to hold the tank.. think of it as a weight savings.
find a local dealer and get them to help you with the warranty stuff.
also, enjoy the bike. i love mine [moto]
OH BTW. there are two tubes at the top of the tank. one is the overflow (when you fill the tank too much) and the other is the fuel vapor hose (connected to the charcoal canister). you will need to remove those before moving the tank. sorry hope you didn't yank on the tank yet without doing that. I'll edit the original list to include that now.
OH BTW II. that brings up removing the charcoal canister unless the original owner already did. or you live in CA. you should be able to search in the HOW TO section to get a how to on that one too.
Thanks again Raux,
No I didn't try to pull the tank yet. Waiting to get all the stuff that needs to go under it first.
Thanks
Hey MadDaddy,
Think you can post some pics with the tank off?
Just wondering what it all looks like under there.
Will do! I'll use Raux's directions and take shots of the steps. Then post them here. [thumbsup]
There are step by step instructions in the online PDF manual. It's under "Removal of Battery." If you don't have the PDF manual you can download it here:
http://www.ducati.com/en/bikes/service/manuals/2009/pdf/M696-09_en.zip (http://www.ducati.com/en/bikes/service/manuals/2009/pdf/M696-09_en.zip)
Just to clarify, there are no steps for battery removal in my 696 manual. The online pdf manual from Ducati does. Of course it tells you to disconnect the breather hose from the bottom, which is baffling to me, do it as RAUX has laid out.
The manual also says there is a connector for battery charging, no illustration of this, of course. I really poked around in my bike when I put my battery leads on and found no such connector. And, given that it is for Ducati's proprietary charger it may not be compatible with anything else even if it is hidden in there somewhere ( I use mine for tender and for heated gear).
Also, my bike has only one side of the gas tank bolted as others have said (Ducati cheaping out?). If it makes you nervous get them from your dealer (screw $.96, washer $.86).
Thanks for the clarification. I've edited my previous post so it has the correct info.

I have this pic (posted before) when it was somewhat naked. It was a biatch getting all those little bolts off. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment as I will repeat the fun when I install the full termis on my 1100S. :'(

i'll be putting the Two Brothers Juice box on soon so i'll take pictures to go with my write up.
maybe i'll make a tutorial for the juice box also.
Here's another good visual aide courtesy of Two Bros..

OK, so what does a juice box do? and Why do I want it?
I don't know but I want one!!!!
Thanks Rusty
