Title: Best Cowboy Boots ?
Post by: DoubleEagle on January 21, 2009, 09:11:07 PM
I was thinking about getting some Cowboy Boots for casual wear and going out.

Who do you all think makes the best looking and best quality . I'm leaning toward Lizard , Caiman or 'Gators.      Dolph      :)

Where to buy them for the best prices ?

I have owned snake, lizzard, bullfrog, several cowhide and by far ostrich is the most comfortable.

Lucchese makes some very nice boots, alittle pricey.
Nacona makes a good boot for the money.

I just read your Super Bowl comment. You might like something from Hush Puppies.  ;D  www.hushpuppies.com

I've watched the Steelers beat the Ravens the past few weeks . That's enough Steelers for one Season for me.

Maybe I'll feel different with the 2 week layoff.     Dolph     :)

be sure to check sheplers.com before you purchase. they have some smoking deals sometimes. I'm not sure when they put boots on sale (they do often) as I has a pair of Red Wings that are indestructible.

(looks like they have a boot sale going on now)

I really like my Tony Lama's, but my next pair are going to be Dan Post.

Cruise Ebay, there are some good deals on new exotics.

I really like my Hathorn Riding Packers for riding (when riding involves hay & horseshit instead of gasoline) and work boots:

For dress & casual wear, I've got a nice enough pair of Tony Lama cowhide boots that cost about half what the Hathorns did (and about a quarter of the White's Boots I've long lusted after...)

In your shoes, I'd find a pair you like from any of the reputable makers folks here have mentioned at a local shop (start with your local Western Wear place, where there's at least an outside chance of finding someone who knows how to fit boots), and wear them around the place, walking & standing, for half an hour or so. The fit on a boot is going to be different from your dress shoes, and a boot that feels more or less OK when you first put it on might be agonizing after a couple of hours -- that's what makes buying online a bit tricky unless a place has a really generous return policy.

And buy a boot jack while you're at it -- if they fit right (snug), they're going to be a pain if you don't have a boot jack or a comely stable girl to help you get 'em off.

I have a pair of Boulet boots which are very comfortable, deer tanned leather.

If money wasn't much of an object, I'd go Lucchese or several other high-quality brands.

Nacona makes boots the old fashioned way.  You choose the heel & toe (pointy or not) and they are reasonable.
Fretz Enterprises in Souderton, PA is where we've bought his boots. $150 - 250 depending on what they're made out of.  hubby bought a pair of deerskin and they were soft as butter (and didn't last long!!!).  He loves the elephant hide boots.  They take a while to soften enough to fit - but once they fit they can be re-soled.  Fretz's sells them at a discount and will send them back for repair.  Repairs are like $75 - 90, but it's cheaper than buying new boots.  He's had the elephants repaired 5 or 6 times.

I love my Nacona boots.

another benefit : his feet don't stink   ;D
Sneakers in size 16 were bobos.  Boots = +10 on the coolness scale.

Depends what you mean by best.   Please note that like helmets boots are very sensitive to your unique shape.  Nocona boots will not fit your foot like a Lama boot or Lucchese.   Justin and Ariat tend to be more neutral.   I strongly suggest you try them on first and if this is your first pair of boots you have someone ensure you're in the right size.   Too loose and you'll get some very nasty blisters on the heal and even ankles.  Too tight is well too tight.  I wear a half size smaller in some of the brands than in others.

Best "high end" or exotic?   Almost every brand has a pair of $300+ boots for sale.   Tony Lama, Lucchese would be my vote for best non custom exotic maker.   Ostrich is tough as nails but some don't like the quilled look, elephant or buffalo are both nice.  I've even seen sharkskin, etc. and the reptilian boots seem to be a staple.

Best for daily, casual or functional wear?    Ariat or Justin.   I've been wearing my Ariat Ropers for 3 years now and they are simply the best boot I've ever owned.  Fit great, good cushioning and have weathered everything I've thrown at them. Before this pair I owned a pair of bay apache Justin ropers that lasted 3 years before the soles gave out.  I don't wear them daily probably 2-3x per week.

+1 on Sheplers.

I'll vouch for Frye.  They make excellent boots.

While not exactly "cowboy" boots, I love my pair of harness 12R's.

They're very well made, extremely comfortable, have held up very well so far (3 years), and look great IMO.

Thanks for all the helpful and informative posts . I'll have to do some thinking because I've looked at several sites and there are sure a lot to choose from. Boots from a little more than $100 to a little more than $3000 .

Lucchese has a size chart for their boots. Most of the sites I've looked at have liberal return policies like Zappos. com whom I've done business with for other footwear. Dolph    :)

Quick google and Rod's is in your area and they carry many of these brands.  boots aren't like duc parts online savings generally aren't more than 10-20 bucks or so.   I'd suggest heading in and seeing what fits best.

cheers

Hi Cowboy, I found a site , grapevinehill.com that is having a 20,09 % off Sale on Lucchese and ordered a pair of $1000 Caiman boots for $342. The site advertises prices on all the different brands they carry like Lucchese and Frey Boots at 30-60 % off retail everyday.

I saw them on Ebay and they had like 504,000 sales w, a 99.8 % positive rating so I figured they were worth the chance. I was pleasantly surprised to see their prices and then to see that I could get another 20.09% off to boot (no pun intended ) was to hard to pass up.

They had some of all of the Lucchese models such as the Classics , 1883s ,20000s etc. They call it their 2009 Stimulus Sale thus 20.09% off.

Sheplers had the nicest looking Lucchese boots but their prices were much higher and they weren't shipping until late March.  Zappos had a Lucchese Caiman boot but they had it discounted from $1100 to $700 something.

I like the idea of the cone design that Lucchese uses to build their boots. and I like the small squared off toe look for a pair of Black Lizards I want to get .

The sale runs through the end of the month.

Another thing, grapevinehill had at the time , 6 pages of Lucchese boots in my size. Zappos had 4 boots in my size.

Lucchese seems to be fairly light in weight , 24 ounches for a pair ...I would have thought Boots would have been heavier.       Dolph       :)

I decided to get these Caiman Lucchese 1883s . They seem to fit me snug in the instep just as the advertisment says they should. I bought them on-line from grapevinehill.com for $342 after the sale discout. Free Ground shipping. I had them in 2 days.

I'm wondering how the same size boot in Nocona will fit me or Old Gringo ?   Dolph      :)
