I like trying foreign and local stuff when I travel.
In Turkey, I discovered Raki, which is distilled from raisins and anise, so it has an unusual air similar to grappa and ouzo.
I don't like ouzo though, go figure.
I like to pick up cottage brand cognacs whenever I find them for reasonable prices. The Quebec liquor stores usually have a good selection (but ridiculous prices on most stuff). One of the best I came across was Michel Forgeron (http://www.cognacforgeron.com/ (http://www.cognacforgeron.com/)), at 50$ for a half litre it is less than half the price of any big name XO and just as good, if not better than some of them.
I'd like to try some aged tequilas once my finances are more stable. Considering the first time I drank tequila was also the last, I think it is time I gave it another chance. Patron et al are making inroads around here, I'd like to find out what the fuss is about. Anyone have any suggestions?
Not sure what this falls under...but its brown, so i consider it a whiskey or brandy of some sort.
Tarantula/Ant/Snake Whiskey/Bradny maybe even vodka. Im not sure. If anyone has ever tried it.... its decent if you can get over the whole fermenting flesh thing. I have a jar of Ant Whiskey/brandy/vodka that ill snap a pic for you. home made stuff.
Don't know if it counts as a whisky as it's not brown (but neither is ouzo, I guess), but I love Chartreuse. Funky, yummy, and strong. ;D
i like arak. mix it with some cold water, get a nice louche going on.
aquavit was also interesting. don't remember the brand or nation of origin, though.

i had O.P Andersson. it was alright, as i recall.
though this was during my college years when i was drinking a bunch of everything, so i don't really recall that much. [laugh]
A few New Years ago, we all did a shot of Grappa at midnight. I immediately looked around for something to get the hideous taste out of my mouth. There was an open bottle of Lagavulin right next to me so I hit it! Sweet, I mean smokey, relief!
For some reason I did a few more of that combination that evening....
neuf - bought hubby a bottle of Patron Silver for his birthday 2 YEARS AGO!! Still half full (or empty depending on your personality). Come to PA and we'll finish it (and all the bottles in the cabinet).
Suggestion : bring a bottle of your favorite to DIMBY. We'll have a tasting review, and hopefully we'll remember the results to post for those not attending.
I had some Patrón Café XO that was really good. Had a Patron yard-long margarita while I was in Vegas that was wonderful. Patrón does make some nice stuff!
