Title: Moto Insurance
Post by: Tailgunner on February 01, 2009, 08:42:04 AM
What do you guys have for coverage on your street bikes?

I've always had full coverage because when I bought the Monster it was with a loan from my Teamster Credit Union, had to be fully insured cause of the loan. After paying it off years ago I just left the insurance as is. Few months ago I quit paying for insurance and stopped riding for the cold season. The full coverage was $411.00 for 6 months through Country Insur.

Wanting to keep the tags current I tried to register with DMV on-line but found that I must have the minimum liability coverage to do so. I now have just that and it only cost me $100.00 for a full year. That's $8.33 per month! I just put my 2011 tags on my plate  [moto]

I only pay about $400/year for full coverage including some stuff over the minimum through Progressive/AAA.  I've got a lot on my side though: clean license, two cars also insured, 39 years old, married.  All that drops my rate a lot.  I'm not so concerned with theft but if I wreck I want some cash.  Especially with a Monster,  one tank ding is $1000 in retail repair.

Through Geico I was $400 a year for the S2R, and $640 for the Duc 848... however, it is only $144 for the Ninja 250. This is full coverage for each on a yearly pay in full basis. Progressive quoted me $2500 a year on the S2R and $4000 on the 848. Funny eh?

Well thanks for the feedback so far. I have Progressive now actually through the Teamster CU. The plan looks easily managed online too so if I want to add some coverage or vehicles, whatnot it can be easily done.

38, single but great credit  [thumbsup]

Yeah, that one puzzled me.  Apparently your credit is right in line with how much of an insurance risk you are.  Good credit = low rates.  Who knew.

3 cages, and a home on the same policy; annually it's about $150 or so for the s4r, and $200 for the new harley, full coverage. my duc was $3000 a year in Los Angeles! can you frickin believe that!? lane splitting made it worth it though, couldnt have done 80 miles a day at 15 mph.

Full coverage $15 a month with Liberty Mutual.

State Farm was the least expensive I carried but they won't cover a MC unless you have a car insured.  I was paying more for 1 car with them than I am now for both cars!  AND I replaced the 95 Civic with an 07 Accord since switching.

Full coverage for $300 a year from progressive.  That includes $3K towards my helmet, jacket, boots basically anything i am wearing that gets damaged.  And towing in case my bike breaks down. Comes out to like $25 a month or so.

Or we all bought our bikes at the beginning of spring so this is when the bill comes due?  Kinda like how all your socks wear out at the same time, you bought them all at the same time.

Don't go getting all logical on us... that makes way too much sense.

I just join the discussion whenever it comes up... my insurance doesn't renew 'til mid-June, but that's because I bought mine as a welcome-home gift to me when I moved back to Oregon (using the leftovers from my moving stipend and starting bonus).  ;D

I'm with State Farm, no tickets... no accidents 'til December.  Backed into a white Subaru in a snowstorm (in a parking lot).  So far they haven't sent me anything saying my rates are goin' up...

Anyway, I pay something like $275 or so per year for full coverage (it's either the 100k/300k/100k or 250k/500k/250k, can't remember which... but it's way more than the minimum required by the state).  I have $500 deductibles on comp & collision.  My cars are at $250, but since the bike is an unnecessary toy, I figured I'd leave the deductibles higher.

State Farm does not care what the brand or model is.  They cover bikes as a courtesy to their automotive customers, so it's not a primary line for them.  They calculate based on year and engine displacement.  Mine being an 8-year-old machine (2001) helps.  The 904cc engine is middle-of-the-road.  An M750 would have been cheaper (it's another bike I had them quote), and something north of 1000 would have been quite a bit more.

Kinda funny to call for quotes, and a Monster 750 and 748 SBK of the same year are the same price.  ;)

Other factors: I have two cars and renter's through State Farm.  Also... my policy was spun off my parents' policy, so it shows up as something like 10 additional years as a good customer.

I'm with State Farm as well, full coverage on my car, my S2R, renter's insurance, and insurance on G's ring = $140 a month.  I've had 2 accidents in the last 3 years and State Farm completely took care of me so quite happy... :)

On that note, did I mention that I went for a fantastic ride today??  God I needed that!!

Strangely, my situation with State Farm is nearly identical to Dan's. Mine's $336 a year for the 100/300/100 coverage. Have the multi-car, no ticket, blah blah discounts stacked up. Even the one from good grades in high school still remains, because getting A's in metal shop, auto shop, and pottery clearly means I'm a great driver. Renter's insurance is a hundred bucks a year. Got "spun off" into my own policy from my parents', as well.

lol, that sounds familiar...  right down to the ~$100/yr for renter's.  I think my renter's is gonna go up a little, because I need to reassess the value of my firearm collection.  In recent months it may have grown to exceed what the policy covers.

Yeah, I had the Good Student discount while in college, and upon graduation they continue it 'til ya turn 25.  When I turned 25, the drop in my premium due to age was offset by the loss of that discount, so I didn't get an overall drop in rates at 25.  C'est la Vie... just means I was paying the lower rate a lot earlier in life.   ;)

I am curious now... I can't remember the exact annual figure on the Duc, nor can I remember whether I have 100/300 or 250/500.  Gonna have to remember to look those up when I get home tonight.
