So I snagged a CycleCat top triple for my '00 900 as part of the OnCycles blemish sale. Though it was a 'blemish piece' it look perfect.. fantasic..
..well not so fantastic. I went to install it yesterday and the holes for the forks are 53mm ID. My forks are the normal Monster 50mm OD. So I've got 3mm of difference in the diameter to make up now. On to the questions:
1. Just to make sure - It's fine to shim that much?
2. I'd need 1.5mm thick shims?
3. Anyone have a good source for shims?

Are there any sources for pre fab moto specific shims?
I found
http://www.metalsupermarkets.com (http://www.metalsupermarkets.com)
Which I can get shims of just about any description it seems- but there's almost too many options. Like which grade of aluminum would one use for this.. they have 11 choices for 'sheet' materials
You might be over thinking it.
6061 would probably work...as would any mild steel.
The steel might rust.

I always do...
I'm just a little irked that my snazzy triple, which is supposed to have fit my bike... didn't. >:(

Yeah,
I hear you.
It is one of the inherent dangers in buying non returnable close out items. :-\
No shims, shims...it'll still look great! [thumbsup] 8)
Yeah... but it should have looked great yesterday! Now I have to track down some shims and dick around with that.

That's me! The epitome of patience.
The only logical thing to do here is put some superbike forks on ;D Well, then you'd have to shim the bottom... oh well [beer]

Lets not open that can of worms...
I bought some cycle cat clip-ons off a multi-stroodle and they have the same issue. I bought aluminum strips cut to the dimensions I wanted from Online Metals (onlinemetals.com). They didn't have 1.5mm so I bought 2 pieces of 1.27mm (0.05") and 1.65mm (0.065") 6061-T6 cut 1" wide by 6.22" long. The 1.27mm stuff was $0.50/piece and the 1.65mm was $0.56/piece. That's right, the shipping was more expensive..... I also bought some sheet for some other stuff, mainly a license plate bracket. Quick turn around.
Length might be a bit long, but nothing the belt sander can't fix. If the 1.27mm is too thin, I will try the 1.65mm and if it is too thick, I'll use the belt sander (on low speed with a fine grit).
Thanks! Those prices are much better than I'd found so far
Yeah I was figuring I'd have to get something a little thicker and take it down to the right thickness. No belt sander for me... it'll be old paper on a glass + a wood block to press the metal flat.
Well maybe now you'll knock it off with the Grizzly Adams cracks [laugh].
I was just sitting here playing around with my calipers and the clip-ons, and I can definitely spread the clip-on an additional 0.3mm, so I may not need to take any thickness off.
If you want to get rid of your old triple, let me know. I'm looking for a donor to grind down and turn black once I have my clip-ons installed
McMastersCarr has a great selection of shims. Brass is easier to form and less likely that you'll scratch your forks installing it.
Of course, I'm solidly in the sbk upgrade camp.

Shushhh. Evol tempters
My forks have already been RaceTeched, otherwise I might be tempted by the SBK upgrade. But I've already got gold valves and springs for my weight, and fully adjustable forks, since it's is the '00 900S with the bling suspesion. Sooo... $2 worth of shims it is... $500 worth of forks and dicking around it is not
McMasters seems to only have big sheets, like if one was runnig a shop.. or I'm missing something.
But a little googling revealed a jewler who might cut brass sheet to my measurements!
