Title: www.ozmonster.org community portal release
Post by: goldFiSh on February 06, 2009, 12:59:46 AM
Hi All,

In recent times, there's been a few of the Syd regulars throwing some ideas around when talking about our little community here on the DMF. It's a really good thing to be a part of the best Ducati Monster community in the world, and as we all have no doubt experienced, there is so much to get out of being a member here, whether it be the friendships formed, the tech problems solved, the inspiration to modify or many many more.

What's hard about the DMF for Aussies is trying to find our local community, and being enthusiastic about our community we wanted to share with every monster we see on the road. So we had the thought to get some cards made up, just like the old days on the DML, to leave on people's bikes and to hand out. But telling people to go to http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?board=52.0 or just sending them to the home page to navigate through was not going to be effective.

So a while ago, we purchased some domain names, and about 2 weeks ago, we started on making a "launch page" for Oz Monster resources - the forum (of course), our photo gallery, and the like...
Our launch date of the site is to coincide with the world record attempt tomorrow in Sydney (the beach party) which is a good vehicle to tell people about our community.
Well it kinda snowballed from a simple launch page, and today I'd like to share what we've been working on...

www.ozmonster.org (http://www.ozmonster.org)

So, its design as a community resource driven by the community. The intention is to provide a portal that provides a one stop  information for aussie ducatisti. We're cautious to use the word "club" but decided to none the less as it's what most people will relate to. We fully intend to keep it as a community resource in the same spirit that the DMF was formed, and it's meant to compliment our DMF home, not compete with it, hence there is no forum, shoutbox, IM or PM system - just simply information collected in one spot.

No single person owns it, there's not going to be a club house (other than the forum), committee meetings, or a charter, and it's not for profit. Yes, it's taken a small amount of money to start up - three of us have made donations to pay for the domain registrations, the site hosting and some start up cards for the beach party. We have no elected positions, but out of neccessitiy we do have a "domain keeper" and a "site keeper"  - Dock is the domain registrant, I sorted out the hosting the site, and am the web admin, and Matty has helped with the initial batch of cards.

We're going to be completely transparent on the operating costs. I've got some new ideas coming for an updated logo whcih I'll present to the community as soon as I have them.
We're getting some swag made, which will include a small donation to aid the running costs of the site, which again, we will disclose fully. If we need more money that what we can get out of selling the swag, we'll ask for donations, just like the DMF.

Anyway, I'll encourage you all to have a poke around and see what you think. It's in its infancy at the moment - whether it will be a good resource or not only time will tell.
Of course, it will only be what we make of it, so I would encourage anyone with ideas or things to contribute to put them forward here. I'll apologise right now for the large about of sydney centric stuff on the site presently. Hopefully this will be balanced out after this announcement!

Cheers people.

goldFiSh  [moto]

PS. Oh, and whilst we've tried to sort out the teething issues, I'm sure there's still a few around. If you find any, drop me a PM and I'll try to get it sorted.

Well done those involved.   [thumbsup] [wine] [clap] [bow_down]

That's going to be much easier to pass on to other monster riders.  Will the cards be available to download and print out for the rest of us to hand out?

Jukie, can you find a gold star smiley please.  You are much better at that than I am. Ta.

As mentioned I have been involved in the discussions and very short birthing period of the portal.
It has been thrown together really quickly after talking about it for a while.
So as Nick said there may well be a few issues with how it may run and display on various browsers.

Basically all I'm saying is just as Nick has said, please poke around create a log-on and add content for all areas to
bring it more inline with the name OzMonster.

Have fun with the new toy.

Matty...  :D :D

Hi Ita.

Let me know how you go.
The portal thingy is just a wrapper around the DMF site - they are not linked, that is, you need to login on the DMF as well..

Yup...

Normally I never need to log in because I stay logged in...   At the moment if I log into the portal thing them click forum, it askes me to log in then rejects me saying my password is incorrect...  If I go via the old site I'm straight in...  Go figure!!

I'll shut down, restart and try again..

hmmm

Dock was having some weirdness as well, but different to that what you've described.

I too always stay logged into the DMF and have not had any issues (and I've tried it with 4 computers and three differing ISPs)

Let me know how you go, you might need to clear  your cookies and cache from your browser..

Silly question but have you created a new account for ozmonster.org
It's not connected to the DMF even though there is the forum on a link inside.

geez, it's a tough crowd tonight!
user count makes no difference - 3 or 3,000,000

from what we saw previously, it seems to be an issue with the front page that welcomes you.
unfortunately you cannot run amuck as someone else.

matty and I were about to have _shitloads_ of fun impersonating dock!

Ita Ita he's our man......

BTW I had a password problem when going to the forum from the Portal, plus the wrapper over the DMF site is a bit annoying - the way there is  - um how do I explain in - a double scroll thing happening, plus I'm loosing view space.. I think i will be just going direct for the moment.

Don't get too frustrated with problems guys, it's Friday night, relax, I understand, I know all about teething problems, it's just that you're brave enough to let us do the testing for you ;)

Title: Re: www.ozmonster.org community portal release
Post by: goldFiSh on February 06, 2009, 03:49:54 AM
yeah the double scroll is unavoidable, as is the loosing view space.

we may end up with just a simple link rather than a wrapper around the forum, or perhaps a choice of both.
going direct is a valid option of course!

re the loosing view space, cmon dude, get a higher res monitor!
and don't worry about the relaxing - after the week I've had (with my real job) this is relaxing... and I've got a beer in hand to boot!

ok to save some of the hassle that people are having, I'm going to change the forum link to simply open the forum in a new window until we get something better sorted out with the login in issues and the like...

it'll be changed over in the next 5 mins. <edit> done  [thumbsup]

well done mods and techs!

tech or geek yes, mod no.

mods are for forums, and it's a credit to the DMF community when you realise that there is basically very little moderation to do.

afaik, there are a couple of mods for a few rowdy local forums, and the flounders and thats about it
on the old DML there was about 20 mods, and it was pretty much needed.

Spider...

Speaking of peddling...  I'm looking at a Jamis Dakota Sport MB

I need two wheels...

Ita

yep, can't go wrong with Jamis...good bike.....email me with price and place of purchase and we'll chat.

you do need 2 wheels.....everyone needs to ride a pushy....it ensures that we're better car drivers (reason I got a motorcycle license in the first place was to be more aware of bikes!)....plus your buttocks will resemble 2 small cantaloupes and then your wife will be grabbing you left, right...and then centre!!!!  ;D
