Just what the American car buyer is looking for. [roll]
Who the make the beast with two backs wants a 365 horse front driver anyways? :P
Good job Ford, now go directly to BK and do not pass go and do not collect any further bailout monies.
I never owned one, but I liked the concept - I love sleeper cars. I have heard mixed reviews over the years about reliability.
To me, this new one doesn't really stay true to the sleeper concept, though. Instead of being a stealthy ninja car, it is just kinda vaguely sporty and bland looking - people are liable to overlook it at a stoplight simply because they don't want to look at it at all. Also, at 38k, I can think of a lot of cars I would rather have. And if memory serves, for this to be a legitimate heir to the SHO badge, it would have to be faster than the Mustang of the same model year.
This looks like it is going to be another iteration of the tuner model that everyone has out now.
Aside from that (a fundamental failure in concept, I'm saying) AWD is nice :)

unless i'm mistaken, they haven't taken
any bailout money, likely due to the stipulations required. they've only requested that money be earmarked for them, guaranteed, in the event that they do end up needing it.
I can think of so many cars I'd rather have for 38k.
My brother had a 96 sho. It was a piece. Me being the car guy in the family, and my brother being a poor broke college student, I took it upon myself to help him out with the car when it broke. It was always broke. I put an alternator in it and then the water pump took a shit a few days later. After that it started missfiring so I did a tune up but it plugged up the cats before I could get to it. New cats were around 2 grand just for the parts. That's when he sold it. It was a pieced together pile of shit that was impossible to work on and that's coming from a professional auto technician.

Ford is working on rehabilitating the Taurus name with a significant redesign that debuted last month at the Detroit Auto Show. Using that sedan as its canvas, the new SHO may also restore respect to a name that has fallen too far. A 365-hp twin-turbo EcoBoost V6, all-wheel-drive and plenty of upgrades

When I was first resigned to drive a sedan, I bought a '90. Have to say it was a damn good car.
Given the other options available in that price range today, my first choice, hands down, would still be the Genisis.
The Yamaha engine was a beast for it's time....
I drove a 91 and the engine was superb, but the gearbox was crap. I have no first hand experience, but agree with the other posts. For $38K, there are so many better options.
I'm just stunned there's a website for Ford Taurus enthusiasts. ???

+1. From what I've been reading in the car mags, Ford has a decent product mix coming compared to the rest.
A former neighbor had a late-80s SHO and the thing was nearly bulletproof, the only time I ever saw the hood up was when it was oil change time and it saw a ton of abuse having gone through two teenage sons. They bought it new and had it when I moved in '03. They may still have it, who knows.
The AWD makes it appealing in my neck of the woods. Not sure I wouldn't pick a WRX over it though...
Prior to the V8 models available post-'96 the SHO was a decent vehicle. The were a handful in the rain though ~
JM
My buddy had one, 92, i think. Great engine, bad rest of car. Horrible transmission and clutch, inadequate suspension and brakes, horrible torque steer. Items like clutch and exhaust seemed like maintenance, not repair. Kinda neat having a big American sedan with a manual transmission that moved so well though.
We had a black '98 SHO with the Yamaha-built DOHC V8. Got it new and had it for 2 years (on a lease).
I wasn't a fan of the 'oval' themed interior, but the SHO was fast and an awesome road-trip car. Wifey and I drove it from MN to Seattle one summer - the car was very well-suited to driving across SD and Montana. [evil] [laugh]
The new one looks great. With AWD and 365 horses, it should be fun to drive, too.
