Title: Emission Standards? Termi question?
Post by: Clickjack on February 11, 2009, 07:37:06 PM
I'm thinking of riding across country during the summer.  Planning on riding the length of California.  I'm also thinking of putting a full Termi kit on my bike in March or April.  Will this get me in trouble with the more eco friendly states?

Also I've been wondering as people are probably just phrasing things differently, is there a difference in Termi Kits?  FUll kit, Full Race Ready, High, Low.  etc.???

as long as the bike meets the emission standards of the state it is registered in. example, if the bike is registered in oregon, and you meets their emission standards, you can ride the bike in any state. follow the rules of the state on your license plate, and your fine.

that being said, i think the only road certified termis are the titanium slipons.

California doesn't check motorcycle emissions.  Your only issue will be noise laws.

California is probably one of the worst for emissions/noise laws, and i have no problem with my full termi system

My arrows, have "not for road use"  stamped on them.  I still don't think I'll have an issue.  Who is gonna check?

Yes there is.  For example, you can get slip ons for the S*R Monsters, that leave the collector 'udder' in place.  Full systems, in this case, will supply the slip ons and either a mid-pipe or header pipes that rid the bike of the udder.  Occasionally you can find full systems for the non S*R monsters, but they are more rare, since there wasn't the ugly udder to get rid of.

High vs Low references where the muffler cans are mounted.  On the pre S*R Monsters, the stock exhaust would be Low mounts.  So after market pipes that are mounted in a similar fashion would be referred to as low-mounts - these usually have the can connect directly to the header.  Conversely, High mounts use some sort of connector S-pipe to connect the stock headers to the cans.  High mount cans are usually suspended from hangers that are added to the tail of the bike bakc by the beer tray.

There are two types of carbon termis for the S*R series - the ones called "high mounts" have a fairly large diameter can and fit on the bike sort of like the originals, and there is another set-up that runs smaller cans fitted at a more pronounced angle tilted up towards the rear. I've got the bigger "high mount" ones, which came with a piece of paper in the box stating they were for "off highway use only". I assume the smaller cans would be noisier, so I'd bet they are probably also non-street approved.
