probably depends on who's riding them to compare.

i wouldn't feel as safe on three wheels. more weight, bigger target, fewer paths to avoid an accident or obstacle, busy worrying about what an idiot i must look like... :P

I test rode one.

felt very stable and everything, but you are REALLLLLLLLLY low to the ground. Not nearly as visible as on a regular bike. it is fun though.

that, and you could almost get 2 new ducatis for the price of one of the spyders. not worth the money IMO.

the rider is pretty close to the ground on those things ... much harder to see and be seen in my opinion.

ANYTHING is safer than a 2 wheeled vehicle. That's why most ERs refer to us as "organ doners".

Yeah you are low to the ground but visibility?
I do not think visibility is a question on those things.
Even if you hate it that thing gets a lot of attention and turns heads just for being a different style three wheeler.
Actually i think you are in more danger of getting hit riding behind one of those because the cage going the opposite direction is gonna turn his head to see what just went by and come into your lane...........
I exagerate a lot. :P

It combines the impact protection of a bike with the agility of a car.  I would say no.

you can do burnouts on them, and i hear if you blip the throttle at the right time, the 30mph wheelspin traction control can be tricked, and you can keep burning rubber... it's like riding a snowmobile on the street.

i don't think you'd be able to push a can-am to the extremes that some of us push our bikes. the capabilities of the machine alone i think make it a safer ride. i mean, if you find a way to high-side one of those suckers, i think you deserve what you get!

i dunno, like any vehicle i'm in, it's not ME i'm worried about.
i feel like every time on the road, im likely to get plastered by some soccer mom on a cell phone, no matter what i'm riding/driving..

Considering the number of trikes (granted the wheels are in reverse arrangement from the Can-Am) I've seen go over, even resulting in death, at Deal's Gap.  I'll go with no as well.  3 of the 7 deaths on Deal's Gap in 2007 were Trikes.

The Spyder is not the same as converted trike. It has all-wheel traction control and computerized stabilization that will not allow it to slide or tip.
It is a very sophisticated machine like nothing else before it.

I did a canyon blast with a buddy of mine who is a dealer. We had a ton of fun and could really rip through the twisties
Top speed was about 115 indicated. Working hard through the canyon is a bit more physically demanding than a bike, we were pretty bushed at the end of the day.
They are amazing, but they are not motorcycles. To me it rides more like a street-going hi-performance Quad.

My wife always says: Trikes - all the danger and none of the fun (of a bike).
Believe me when I tell you the Spyder is neither a trike or a motorcycle.

And BTW MSRP is between $15 and $18k, I don't see how that equals two new ducs unless you're buying the bottom of the brand and you shouldn't compare the Spyder to that. For the amount of technology and sophistication, and quality of components (1000cc Rotax high performance Vtwin) the price is pretty good.

a guy at work here has one. He rides it all the time, i havent gotten on it but have talked with him alot about it and have seen it close up many times. Cool for what it is, what it is not is a motorcycle. I wouldnt even consider it in the same family. He bought it for his wife because she wanted to ride a MC but was afraid of falling down, yet he rides it all the time to work.....go figure. I think if your rich and can afford it hell why not. Id like to have one of those, a harley, and a couple of monsters.

My wife is going through the lemon law crap with hers.  When they take the piece of shit back (which lawyer is quite sure they will, since he won't get paid if they don't) she wants to get a 696.

But seriously, those kind of issues are no fun - hope she likes her 696 ;)

It can happen to any vehicle, I know of two friends who've gone through it with their Ducs...
