Title: America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride - WE DID IT!!!
Post by: Randimus Maximus on February 12, 2009, 07:27:46 AM
Stella and I have signed up with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training Program to raise money to end blood cancers.

We will be participating in America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride, a 100-mile jaunt around scenic Lake Tahoe on June 7, 2009.  Yes, we will be pedaling the entire distance!!  :o

Each of us need to raise $4,200 to do so.  We understand that the economy has tightened up spending for a lot of people, but even a small donation will  go a long way.

Below are the pages you can visit to make a donation in either Stella's or my name.

Stella:           http://pages.teamintraining.org/rm/ambbr09/ppenna

Randimus:     http://pages.teamintraining.org/rm/ambbr09/rhunt

Thanks so much for your consideration!

Dad was diagnosed with CML 5 years ago.  Good luck with the century!!

P.S.- I split up the donations so the battle was a little more even.  I'm voting on the lady getting to $4200 first  ;D

You, my dear are awesome!  Thank you from both of us!   We just got done with our first group training ride this morning.  It was a brisk 20-something when we started and warmed up to 31 by the time we finished.   The best part is always the Guinness that follows but today it was the note that you had made a donation so again:  Thank you!  <insert pedaling smiley icon>

Hey DMFers!

We are three weeks into the training program!

Week One saw us riding around Wash Park in Denver is 25-30 degree temps.  Yes, a bit on the chilly side, but we rode for about 15 miles.

Week Two ride followed a snow shower that blanketed the region with 3-4 inches of snow and a little ice in spots.  We delayed our start a bit and managed to ride about 15-20 miles on some wet and occasionally icy roads.

Week Three ride was yesterday.  Finally some nicer weather in Denver.  About 40 degrees and sunny.  We rode about 30 or so miles (not counting Stella and I's 3-mile sprint to make the light rail to the ride location in the morning).

We just found out yesterday that two of our fellow riders from the Denver Chapter both lost their fathers to Leukemia in the last five years.

In addition, two of the riders in our group (including our assigned mentor) are both cancer survivors, much in part to the research that LLS and the Team in Training program funds.

Both of us are very grateful to those who have already made donations.  We're are both on our way to reaching our fundraising goals.  However, we still have a ways to go.

We both realize that the economy is in the shitter and times are tough for many.  If you can, please help us out.  Even a small donation helps!!

Below are the pages you can visit to make a donation in either Stella's or my name.

I used to be a cyclist. Riding in weather like that literally used to hurt my lungs.

I'll pass on pics of your azz in a pair of those shorts.

I don't care if it's Christy Turlington wearing them..they don't do sh*t in the looks dept.  They might feel good sitting on that bike seat for a few dozen miles but if you want to wear something that looks like you too a dookmode in 'em..    :-X

One particular day of riding in Boulder, CO (where I work and where 95% of the population are cyclists and the other 5% live in tents down by the river), I was pedaling through town and one of the 5%-ers ran up to me, or rather staggered quickly considering the state he was in and tried to push me off the road/off my bike screaming "SPANDEX GOT NOBODY NOWHERE!!"    It was pretty funny.    ;D

I think Randy and I saw those people on the way to lunch from your workplace...

Gonna be donating to both of you in equal amounts (can't let Randy's ego get too far out of control) in the next day or two.

I do the Light the Night walk each year for Leukemia and Lymphoma. My grandparent's neighbor (great lady and always fun to chat with) has been battling Leukemia for a while now but things recently took a turn for the worse and she is on borrowed time. I dedicate my walks to her.

remember folks you don't HAVE TO sponsor someone doing a 'RIDE RUN, MARATHON, ETC" to donate to a cause.

you can actually donate to a cause for the sake of donating to it directly and not have any of the money lost by adminstrative costs through a 3rd party.

just something to think of next time.

Also, for those interested, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is a 501(c)(3) charity.

In addition to your donations being tax deductible, the money is invested wisely.

Their website has all of the full disclosure information regarding how the money is spent, including financial statements.  In 2008, 74.3% of all money raised was spent on the mission (research, education and patient services).  You can read more here::>  http://www.leukemia-lymphoma.org/all_page?item_id=12358

I'm happy to see others on the board doing Team in Training!  It's a great program and for me at least life changing.  I'm doing the Solvang Century with them in 2 weeks and am really excited.

I'll be sure to drop a donation to both of you [thumbsup]

Thanks to Titty for the nice donation  [thumbsup]

Training is going well.  We rode 54 miles last week with the group, and will be hitting a spin class tomorrow, due to the road conditions here in Denver (we had 12-20" of snow blanket the area this week).

As far as donations are concerned....we could both use a little help.  We both understand that times are tough and money is tight, but a small donation goes a long way.

Wow!  It's been over a month since either of us have given you all an update.

Training has been interesting to say the least.  True to form, April was the snowiest month in the Denver area.  This forced us indoors to spin classes on three occasions.  Not your ordinary spin classes, mind you.  These were at a minimum 2 1/2 hours each. BRUTAL!

We have been able to ride 3 of the last 4 weekends.  All three featured very hilly rides consisting of 54 - 65 miles.  All also featured cold, rainy, sleety, windy and or/ foggy weather.

But alas, we ride.

Why?  Because we can.  We can make a difference by helping LLS get closer to their goal of having a cure by 2015.

We are 5 weeks away from the big ride in Tahoe.  I can't wait!

Stella has signed on to be a mentor for the fall season and will be riding a century in Moab with TNT.  I'm going to continue riding and will be doing another century some co-workers in August to benefit the American Diabetes Association.

We are co-hosting a fundraiser at My Brother's Bar in Denver on May 11th to help reach our fundraising minimums.  If you are, or know someone in the area who wants to stop by for a burger & a beer to help a good cause, let us know.

Below are the pages you can visit to make a donation in either Stella's or my name.

Randimus:     http://pages.teamintraining.org/rm/ambbr09/rhunt (http://pages.teamintraining.org/rm/ambbr09/rhunt)

As always, we appreciate the support from each and every one of you!!

Three weeks until Tahoe!

No spinach.  Just all gooey goodness they call "cheese!" from the goat and red peppers.  All mixed up, baked to heavenly bliss,
then WHAM!  OFF the menu.  But not for long after I was found begging on my knees to bring it back.  But yeah, the next batch
is on me (er, on my tab) with our thanks to you!

Post by: Randimus Maximus on June 03, 2009, 04:41:00 PM
Well, the big ride is nearly upon us.

Polly and I leave bright and early Friday morning to head to beautiful Lake Tahoe for our 100-mile Team In Training ride around the lake for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

I have to tell you that it has been quite an experience so far.

We started training way back in February with a few laps around Washington Park here in Denver on a 25 degree day. Since then, we've gradually increased our riding distance and difficulty to an 85-mile ride and a lot of hill climbs. The weather was rarely nice, we've seen rain, wind, rain, cold, rain, snow, rain, more cold and so on. We even spent a few Saturdays in the torture chamber known as a spin class.

But through it all, our strength and stamina has increased, our friendships have grown closer, we have laughed and cried and worked our butts off, but we are ready to ride!

Along the way, my group of cycling teammates have raised nearly $60,000 to fight various blood cancers. Most of that money will go directly to research, treatment and patient services through LLS, who have been very instrumental in not only helping to find treatments and ultimately a cure for cancer, but also improving the lives of those fighting cancer.

We're both still a little short on donations, so if you can, please visit either of our fundraising home pages and make a modest donation.  No worries if you can't.

Stella:           http://pages.teamintraining.org/rm/ambbr09/ppenna (http://pages.teamintraining.org/rm/ambbr09/ppenna)

Randimus:     http://pages.teamintraining.org/rm/ambbr09/rhunt (http://pages.teamintraining.org/rm/ambbr09/rhunt)

Thanks very much for all of your support through this endeavor.  [bow_down]

Yes it is a long ways to ride.  But much easier than going through chemo I've been told.

Stella is doing another century with TNT later this year at Moab, and I'll be doing another century here in Colorado for the American Diabetes Association in August.

Have a great time guys, ride safe and yes Randy, the hikes next time out will be much better. But if I remember correctly, YOU wanted to head back while I wanted to continue up to the gorge.  [cheeky]

What a wonderful 100-mile bike ride!!

Both Stella and I completed the course in a little over 6 hours.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day here yesterday.  Started overcast, but buy the time we got to the top of the climb at Emerald Bay, the clouds were parting and the sun was beginning to shine upon the beauty that is Lake Tahoe (it had been rainy and overcast since we arrived on Friday afternoon).

The scenery was just incredible all the way around the lake.  [thumbsup]

Every thing that TNT did for us here at the event made it really special, whether that was the pre-ride rally the night before, the SAG support, to the notes left on our doors thanking us.  Saw many complete strangers cheering us on along the route.  Getting encouragement from other TNT riders.  Just a great day all around.

One of the coolest moments was stopping 4 miles short of the finish, having a few beers while we waited for the rest of our Rocky Mountain Team, and then rode the last little way to the finish together as a team.

And the best part is that as you ride around the incredibly beautiful lake with it's pristine water and scenic views, it all kind of hits you.  You didn't spend all that time training for yourself.  You didn't raise all those funds for yourself.  You did it for others.  Others that are suffering.  Others that will now have a chance at survival.  Others that may not need to go through the agony that others did.

It's great to be part of something that is way bigger than one's self.  [thumbsup]

We'll have some pictures up after we get home later today and get settled in.
