From MSNBC: "Russians also detain pirates
Separately, the Russian navy said Friday its nuclear-powered heavy missile cruiser Peter The Great detained 10 Somali pirates closing in on an Iranian-flagged fishing trawler. Russian military prosecutors were questioning the men, who were caught on Thursday with rifles, grenade-launchers, illegal narcotics and a large sum of money, the navy said."
Now, correct me if I am wrong, but they were in international waters -- how are there "illegal narcotics" where there is no law???

Correct me if im wrong, but since the is no law, shouldn't the Ruskies just have sunk their ships and be done with it? ;D
treaty law
they are signatories on a couple of UN agreements which means they have to turn those guys over to authorities for trial.
but i am with you bro. start doign that and i bet the pirate attacks will drop.
Who said it's about law? They scored them some weapons & drugs!

Since when do they honor that? [laugh]
Id just dump the drugs, hold onto the weapons and spread the wealth across the ship, then turn into a priate. the ships nuclear powered anyway, not like you need diesel or anything!

Yea but what are you going to do when your fuel rods run out in a few years. I'm sure in 1985 you can buy plutonium in any corner drug store, but in 1955 it's a little hard to come by! Oh wait I got mixed up sorry ;D
The nations need to get together and sign some sort of new treaty. One that allows them to force these pirates to walk the plank.
Plutonium isn't the fuel in nuclear reactors...

Treaty or no treaty, I wonder how much of that actually does happen that we of course aren't going to hear anything about... ;)

Dude. You're talking about the Russian Navy. With a long and glorious history.
So stop giving them ideas! [laugh]
Plutonium as nuclear fuel, flux capacitors, excess nitrogen . . . as a submariner, nuclear operator and diver, i don't know whether to laugh or cry. [laugh] :'(

Correct, HOWEVER, most nuclear reactors run off of the same fuel, Uranium 235. We use a much more highly enriched fuel than most, allowing us to go longer before refueling, usually at least 20 years...

yeah, but i was talking about the flux capacitor.
them russians put all sorts of wacky stuff on their ships.
I heard some good piracy stories from a friend of mine who is a naval engineer and spends a lot of time reading about the illegal bounties of the high seas. He showed me an article about a gang of pirates who tried to take a Russian flag vessel in the straits of Malacca which is more heavily pirated than the somali coast. The Russians fought back with their own arms and killed all the pirates. According to the tale, pirates in the Malacca Strait have never tried to take another Russian ship since that incident.
Someone needs to flex their muscles a little bit and push them around. If shipping companies/insurance companies keep paying ransoms its just going to be business as usual.
I've been on a Russian ship. It was quite an interesting time. And, I can neither confirm or deny the existence of a Flux Capacitor.
