Betcha can't watch it just once!

BP you got me on a drum kick since posting the Buddy Rich Muppet clip. That ultimately led me back a generation to Gene Krupa and this gem. I was aware of Barbara Stanwyck but have never seen her before. She is soooo alluring here especially during the matchbook solo.   [bacon]    [evil]
(Free beer to anyone who correctly identifies the guy with the notepad. Redeemable in person) [drink]

Speaking of Mr. Krupa...        [bow_down]   This is the guy Buddy looked up to.   [thumbsup]

Here's a sample for anyone interested in insanely badass, swinging, infectiously danceable old school drumming...

I'm hooked on the old stuff thanks to Joel.         8)

I suppose if he were feeling up to it, Statler might slice a lime into 3 pieces instead of just halves. But I don't really see umbrellas and tequila playing nicely.

Notable firsts:

- First to bring the bass drum into the studio (1927)  Recording engineers previously thought it would overload the equipment!

- First to put a black musician in a white band

- Invented the modern tunable tom

- Invented the modern hi hat cymbal

- First to put the drums out front and use extended solos

- First celebrity to be busted with pot (2 years before Robert Mitchum)

- Louie Bellson, one of Gene's protoge's, is responsible for the first double bass drum set (Gretsch)     The two of them defined what the modern drum set would look like to this day.

"You want to know what I think of Gene Krupa? Well, where do you begin? Gene Krupa was the beginning and the 'end' of all drummers. He's a great genius - a truly great genius of the drums. Gene discovered things that could be done with the drums that hadn't been done before, ever. I'll tell you about Gene. Before Gene, the drums were in the background, just a part of the band. To put it in plainer terms, the drums didn't have much - meaning. Along comes Gene and the drums take on meaning and they're out of the background. The drummer becomes somebody, you know? Gene gets credit for making people aware of the drummer - of what he's doing and why he's doing it and he deserves every bit of that credit. Can you imagine jazz without Gene?"

- Buddy Rich
