Title: Maintenance Interval
Post by: AFMO on February 18, 2009, 12:18:48 AM
Hey all,

I'm new to this site, but have read threads around here for awhile.  As many of you experience, the monster bug has me captive, and though I've been riding for years, I'm now looking at a 2000 M750 Dark.  It has just over 12k miles, so I spoke with a dealer about the 12k service today.  My question is, how essential is everything in the 12k service?  For close to $700, my local dealer includes valves, belts, fork seals, steering heads,, brake fluid, and so on.  In my previous experience, I haven't done things like fork seals as preventative maintenance, but I figured I'd get your input.  I know valves and belts are necessary, but just wondered how important the other stuff is on the more simple 2-valve bikes.  Finally, is there anything specific to look out for on this model that is unique to ducati?

Thanks for your help.

Most of what you listed are all normal for a 12K service +/- this or that.  Make sure they sync the throttle bodies while they are at it.

But, fork seals?  If they are REALLY doing fork seals also for $700, not bad....but I doubt it, and is it needed?!?!?

For me, fork seals are one of those:  "If it's not broke, don't bother!"

By "fork seals" they probably mean change the fork oil, which, though not necessary at 12K is a good idea.  If you choose to have the fork oil done this is a perfect opportunity to do the springs and valves.

You need to get the valve clearance checked.
You need to get the belts replaced.
You need the TPS to by synced.

Everything else is pretty basic preventative maintenance.

Except the fork seals -- those only need to be replaced if they are bad.
