Title: Verizon Voicewing (VOIP) to be terminated March 31
Post by: ducatiz on February 18, 2009, 08:38:37 AM

Effective March 31, 2009, Verizon will no longer offer VoiceWing. All service will be terminated. Should you have questions, call us at 1-800-505-6495 or 1-800-506-7466 (TTY) between 8:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m. ET (Mon-Fri) or 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. ET (Sat).

If you haven't gotten this notice, get to it if you want to keep a VOIP service.

They will dump your number.

Anyone comment about Cox Cable for their VOIP?

I used Vonage several years ago and dumped them, their cust serv was THE WORST.

Who else doesn't suck?

Well, I'll scratch Verizon off my list...

I'm curious what other people use, since I'm thinking of making the jump. Specifically I want to set up my own VOIP equipment at home so I can monkey with the software and add a few features my existing phone lacks.

I used Vonage from the time that they started until a few years later when their SHITTY customer service delays got to me.  When I finally called to cancel, i was on hold for 54 minutes -- fortunately I was at work and doing other things, but that's what the clock timer said.

I switched to Verizon's VOIP in 2004 and loved it until last year when I had a "glitch" -- all incoming calls got "this number is not valid" as a message (in a brit accent??!!), but outgoing calls worked fine.  It took 2 weeks to get them to figure out the problem.  Other than that glitch and custserv problem, they have been fine.  Cheapest too.

Now, I got this notice and I am looking around.  Cox has VOIP but they are $$$ compared to Verizon and I am loathe to go back to Vonage.

Nextiva has good reviews, and I think they'll let me use my current TA.

I think Nextiva is the winner.

They have a deal for $195 for 12 months, which is $16.25/month and that includes a free Linksys TA.  That's not bad at all.  They also have a month-to-month deal for $19.95, but no free TA.  They only have one service, which is every feature and unlimited everything.

Its called magic jack.

The only "disadvantage" is that the thing has to be hooked up to a computer so it isnt quite stand alone.  I have it and it is great.  It is $40 for the usb unit and $20 a year (first year comes with the unit).

The phone quality is good and it works just about anywhere.  Im doing my MBA in Korea right now and I am able to communicate with my Job back in the states.  Lets just say the time difference gets a little annoying when you get a call in the middle of the night.

$40 is just cheep enough to not mind if you loose it.  I say give it a try.  I like it alot.
