Title: Poll: Lego Visor graphic initial design
Post by: BastrdHK on February 18, 2009, 01:43:51 PM
Here are a few pics of the Lego graphic installed on an AGV stealth.  The vinyl will be printed oversize so that you can trim it to your helmet for a truly custom fit.

I think the eyes are a bit too big, and the whole face is a bit spread-out. Kinda makes it look like the Wal-Mart Smiley.

Otherwise, it looks good and thanks for all the work you've done thus far.

It's pretty close - close enough to match the scale of a helmet; which is most important anyway.

My opinion is that the eyes/mouth are too large, by pretty much actually.

Also, maybe the yellow shouldn't extend quite as far back, as in not covering the whole visor.

modest 0.02

This is turning out better than I had imagined.  Only one small suggestion though - The eyes and smile might be a little too big.  Size them down a bit would give you a better comparison to the Lego Minifig.  OTHERWISE, IT'S AWESOME!!!!!!   [thumbsup]

Thanks fellas,

This has been fun to work on for you guys....enjoying the feedback!

Yes, we definitely had peoples attention, I was ahead of him in a cage, and watched as people turned to see him coming.  When we stopped for shots he said he could not believe how many looks he was getting.  Several people commented as we took photos.  One guy said, "I like it.....its like...'Have a nice day, and lets f%#$ing ride!'.....cool!"

Only one small suggestion though - The eyes and smile might be a little too big.  Size them down a bit would give you a better comparison to the Lego Minifig.

I tend to agree about the face being a little large, but the scale fits the rider/helmet much better when riding, and when you see it from another car on the road.  I will scale it down and deepen the yellow a bit.

Also, maybe the yellow shouldn't extend quite as far back, as in not covering the whole visor.

I will apply it to an Arai tomorrow where the visor does not extend back as far.  However, I am going to leave the vinyl over sized so the individual can trim it to taste.

I like it.  Very nice work, HK!

I tend to agree about the face being a little large, but the scale fits the rider/helmet much better when riding, and when you see it from another car on the road.  I will scale it down and deepen the yellow a bit.

Perfect.  With a (slightly) smaller 'face' and a deeper yellow background it should be just right.   I also like your plan to allow enough material so we can trim them to fit our shields. [thumbsup]

Is the yellow reflective?  I saw the nighttime pic, but I can't tell if it's bright because of the camera flash or because it's truly a reflective material.

For $25 "to our door" I think you've done a marvelous job.  Count me in for one when you're ready to take orders.

Thanks for the comments guys!  They really help the design process and so do a couple of these  [drink]

The current product I have sourced (Oracal 260F) is not reflective.  After the first batch I am going to try and get my hands on some reflective, no one seems to carry it.  I have found a supplier in China, but I am not keen on their material.   Oracal and 3M are premium products with ratings that are probably overkill for our application, but its much more consistent and easier to work with.

I think it's cool.  You had me laughing at all the images, but if you are going for the lego figure face I think the image at the top more closely matches the lego faces in the middle in comparison to the one at the bottom.
I think the mouth is too wide, the eyes are too big and the mouth and eyes  are too far apart.  Although I was just thinking that where you have the eyes placed may make it easier to see.  Can you see through that?  How about at night?

i think part of the side should be in black to match the helmet....as you can see with the sample red and yellow face, his sides are red to make the face window look smaller... it is still hilarious... i would love to get one, as soon as i make a decision on a new helmet... [wine]

That's the design of the helmet, not the mask.

Look at the helmet on the left. Plastic covers over the hinge mechanism, painted to match the rest of the helmet.

Still want one, it's hilarious.

Other emoticons would be cool too.

I think if the scale stays the same but the mouth moves slightly closer to the eyes vertically it'd be perfect but I'm pretty happy with it the way it is. :)

I think it would be much better if you placed a dot dead center and pulled everything in about 1/2" -1" and shrunk things to compensate!

Jay,

The entire graphic is perforated, so your field of view is the same.  This should only be used with a clear or slightly tinted shield.  I strongly advise against using it in low visibility conditions/at night.

Thanks guys!  Everything is going smoothly so far.  I have enjoyed all the support and comments.  I would like to remind everyone who started this whole thing..... [bacon] roll..... He Man....... he deserves a big round of  [clap] for bringing this to our attention.  I could not imagine doing a project like this for a better group of people.  I am blown away by the quality of people this board attracts.  It has been a real pleasure!

The graphics are being laminated as I type, and the first shipments will go out tomorrow.  International buyers I am still working on your shipping quotes and will PM you individually with a total.  I am writing the installation guide, and will post it before anyone gets their visor vinyl.

I appreciate your patience!

I have received everyone's payments that were sent via PayPal, and I will continue to update the list.  Again, include your DMF screen name, so I can keep accurate records.  If you would like to use a check, no worries.

Send the check to:

Is there a post with an updated list?

I can't wait to slap this sucker on... should i put it on the tinted or clear shield?

As far as application goes, would applying heat help with the curves?  Ive gotten pretty decent at applying vinyl to other things but ive never tried perforated vinyl which may react differently.

Also, too bad we arent all located in the same area, i would be so down to go on a group ride with our lego face shields  [beer]

I remember BastardHK mention about low visibility with vinyl+tinted shield at low light condition.  Putting it on your clear shield might be the way to go, IMO.

INSTALLATION GUIDE FOR VINYL VISOR GRAPHIC:

***Use this material on a clear or slightly tinted visor at your own risk!***

***DO NOT USE AT NIGHT OR IN LOW VISIBILITY CONDITIONS***

(I don't need a lawsuit....besides there isn't much to take anyway)

You will need a clean, dry visor, an XACTO knife(preferred and can be found at your local arts and crafts store/hobby shop for $3) or razor knife, hair dryer or heat gun, a squeegee or credit card, and lots of patience!

1. - Clean your visor with mild soap and water.  Dry the visor with a soft cloth so that no dampness or residue is
      left behind.

2. - Attach the visor to your helmet and secure the helmet, so that it will not move during installation of the
graphic.  Lay the vinyl over the visor to get an idea of where you will position it during installation.

3. - Remove the protective backing from the vinyl and hold it at the edges that will be trimmed so you will not
contaminate the adhesive with the oils on your fingers.  Center the graphic and lightly lay it across your
visor.  DO NOT STRETCH THE MATERIAL!  This vinyl has memory and will attempt to return to its original
state over time and will cause cracking/peeling.  Let it naturally fall across the visor.

4. - Apply the graphic to the center of the visor and work your way out to the edges one side at a time.  The
vinyl has a pressure activated adhesive.  You may reposition the vinyl as you apply it making sure not
pull or stretch the material.  Because of the curve most visors exhibit, the material will want to ripple
in some areas.  TAKE YOUR TIME AND BE PATIENT!  Work with the material and reposition it until you get
the most desirable fit.  Use a squeegee or credit card to smooth out the material as you apply it working
from the center to the edges.  DO NOT ALLOW CREASES TO FORM!  Lift the material, reposition and
smooth out all creases.  DO NOT TOUCH the adhesive where it will contact the visor or the visor surface
itself.  The oils on your hands will inhibit a positive seal.  Don't worry, it will not be perfect at this stage!

5. - Once you are satisfied with the graphics overall position you may begin applying heat to shrink fit the
material as you smooth it with your card.  Use a hair dryer or heat gun set to low or medium heat holding
it 3-4" from the graphic.  ***CAUTION*** overheating can cause separation of the laminate and distortion
of the vinyl.  DO NOT LIFT THE VINYL AS HEAT IS APPLIED!  This will also cause distortion and improper
      fitment.

6. - If possible remove the visor from the helmet to prevent the helmet finish from being damaged during
trimming.  Use your XACTO Knife or razor knife to begin trimming off the excess material.  The XACTO
knife is preferred and allows surgical precision because of a finer tipped blade.  Start by inserting the tip of
the blade into one of the perforations.  Use the edge of the visor as a guide for your knife and stay as close
to it as possible.  You want the vinyl to be flush with the visor.  Excess material will lift and catch the wind
causing ripples.  Try to stay in the same row or column of perforations as it gives a cleaner look.  Hold the
trimmings taught with the free hand and allow the blade to do all the work.  Done properly, the blade will
glide through the vinyl.  Again, do not pull or stretch the material.

7. - Once the excess has been trimmed check the opening/closing operation of your visor to make sure there is
no interference.  Use the tip of your blade to pop any air bubbles that may have formed.  Apply heat and
smooth firmly from center to the edges.

8. - RIDE SAFE!!!  Take some creative pictures.  I am eager to see these in action  8)

Good luck,

- Will

Well I just went for a short ride. Passed right by a cop going in the opposite direction and he didn't turn around. Either he didn't care or didn't notice. I'm in Texas BTW.

I must say though... it's a little distracting. It's harder to see details in the road and screws with your depth perception. I found it harder to judge how far away cars were and how fast they were stopping. Maybe it won't be as distracting if I ride with it more often, but this was the first time I felt concern for my safety since my first highway ride.

I definitely would not ride with it at night or in tunnels. Bring a spare clear visor with you if you're afraid you'll be caught after dark.

Anyone else share my same experience or concerns?

It did get quite a few looks though. The kids getting out of school loved it.

---

EDIT: Hrmm... maybe i felt a little more distracted by the visor than I should have been. I think I may be getting sick and riding my bike triggered light-headed-ness making it harder to concentrate while riding. My niece has strep throat, and it was only a matter of time until I caught it... just a coincidence that it happened the same time I was testing the visor skin. I still think the visor skin itself makes it harder to see when riding though. I'll try it again once I'm no longer sick... and let me know how you guys feel riding with it.

That's smart for certain. I'd guess that if it were me that I'd be distracted because I'd be too excited about it!!!!

im seriously going crazy waiting for this thing!!  Luckily im going to watch a movie with a friend so hopefully it comes today in the mail.. Im all the way on the left coast so i have no idea how long it should take to get here.

i went to a local sign shop to see how much it would cost to get a custom face shield graphic done... they told me with the material thats perforated and laminated, you dont want to use liquid during the application process.  They also recommended getting a tape to seal around the edges to ensure that nothing works its way under the portions that are perforated.

:( no lego face shield for my group ride tomorrow... im so dissapointed... oh well.  I will just have to wait for the next event.

No it is not recommended......it is meant to be applied to a clean, DRY surface!  Your installation instructions will help.

Sorry for the delay ghosthound.....PP shipping ain't worth the paper its printed on!  I personally mailed duclvr's graphic at the Post Office March 2nd and it was there the 4th.  [roll]  The tape on the edge is not a bad idea.  The adhesive is aggressive enough to combat this if installed properly.  Taping would be insurance and could extend the life of the mod.

I was in Siberia when I dropped off the shipment.  I had my doubts, but the Siberian postal worker assured me he had the fastest reindeer team in the land!

I shipped from South Carolina, and Rameses in NC still has not received his either.  I contacted the Post Office that I shipped from, and they assured me that all the packages were received/processed without an issue.  Long story short, I will not use PP shipping again.  I apologize for the inconvenience guys!

I shipped from South Carolina, and Rameses in NC still has not received his either.  I contacted the Post Office that I shipped from, and they assured me that all the packages were received/processed without an issue.  Long story short, I will not use PP shipping again.  I apologize for the inconvenience guys!

No need to apologize man!! We are just impatient! haha.  The shipping info said 4-9 days so your still golden.  I just really hope it comes sooner rather than later!

... i still need to get a new clear shield.

Just a small detail in case all of you weren't aware of it...

The date on the email with "tracking number" is not the same as the date that your package was shipped out.

Mine went out 3 days after I got the email.

I finally got mine!  The long wait is well worth it.  I am in Seattle, WA, BTW.

Well, now that I've put the sticker on, I would have to say that it was a pain in the neck to apply it on a Arai faceshield.  The shield vents caused a lot of problem that I couldn't help but had some creases around the outer edges of the vents.  It's not very noticable from a distance though.

CAN'T WAIT TO GO OUT AND RIDE!

Yes, the Arai is a little different.  It helped when I popped those vents out and applied the vinyl to the bare shield.  I cut out the slots, and popped the vents back in.  Makes it much easier.

Don't worry.. the shipping "updates" are useless from USPS.  It actually emails you when the payment for postage was made... not when it was shipped or where it is currently at.

USPS' shipping notification is just crap they try to make look like UPS' and FedEx's tracking. The USPS system was only designed to show that a package reaches a destination, and often times you won't see any tracking information until AFTER you get the package. It's helpful to people who ship things, but not those awaiting shipments.

I'm hoping it gets better in bright sunlight. I'm gonna wear it on my way to the Duc dealer tomorrow. They've got some kind of demo promotion going on. I will take an extra shield to wear during the demos....don't wanna drop anything as a LEGO.

as for the soapy water... i stopped by a sign shop to see what they would charge to get something made for me and i also asked them for installation tips.  They said that because it is laminated, and perforated, they wouldnt recomend using a water application...

ghosthound is 100% correct......DO NOT USE SOAPY WATER.......the visor must be clean and dry to get the best adhesion.  Water is only used for certain types of adhesive, specifically large graphics on surfaces that have multiple contours where positioning is difficult.  Vehicle wraps are a good example of this type of application.  Most people end up using too much soap (you only need about one drop of liquid soap per liter) which leaves a film as the water evaporates and prevents proper adhesion.

You win the battle, and can choose to blow him out of the water with this knowledge or be merciful, and tell him he is not entirely wrong.  8)

Yes, I will print more on request, but they will not be the same price for non DMF members.  $35 for non members....save $10 if you join the DMF  ;)

I got a weird tip on installation. Being a lazy ass I sat in my recliner putting the LEGO mask on. Once I got it where I wanted with the shield IN the helmet, I got it started in the middle and worked my way out. What really helped was holding the shield over my face while in full recline mode. If you keep the mask sorta curled away from the shield it was easier for the decal to not get accidentally stuck.

In the attached pic I'm using a cloth to simulate the decal. My kids think I'm nuts. All in all it took me about an hour to get it on. Patience is the key and yeah my arms got tired.

FYI....be very carefull riding with this on.  I just got back from a test ride.... wowzer.... my head is spinning. My eyes had a hard time switching from looking at the dots, to looking through the dots.

+1 i think it might of been wiser to go with the big dots. I threw my contacts in and went for a ride, it was easier to not focus on them with my contacts on but the second you start looking at the dots, you wont see anything but dots. I think this will be a show off visor, just to look pretty riding around town. I wouldnt take this on a weekend ride or to the track.

Its harder to see through it when the sun is shinning at you.  I noticed that in the shaded areas, vision was barely disturbed. I did notice that people would stare and sometimes even point  [laugh]

I will post pix with the bike tomorrow!

As i was wearing it today... i started thinking... It seems like a lot of the visual distortion comes from the laminate layer.  I understand its importance in protecting the finish on the printed vinyl but i believe if it was just the perforated vinyl, we would be able to see through it a lot better.

I got mine on Friday and wore it on the 18 mile ride to work, traffic was a little slow, however I got a lot of looks, a ton of thumbs up and lots of people creaming things like "that's so awesome!" and "That Rocks Man!" It was way too much fun.

I wear all black gear on a dark monster but add a Repsol version of the Axio hardpack, which has a hard plastic shell, I think it goes well with the LEGO face. Sadly I can only wear that visor w/face when it is bright outside, and I live in the pac NW.

here's the bag I wear

I wore the Lego visor today on my way to school. It freaked me out most of the time, so I rode with it up, but lowered while at stoplights. Kids and moms think it's cool. A harley guy in his bar and shield festooned cage called me a squid. I called him a tool...no response after that. I can't wear it like some of you guys. I feel like I'm riding with a blindfold....but when a hot soccer mom likes it, life can be good.

The back of the graphic is black, and is the only side with adhesive.  If you flipped it all people would see is black, and you would be challenged to a staring contest with a giant lego man every time you put your lid on.

The graphic will trim down to any size you want.  You do not have to follow the outline of your visor.  If you want to trim the graphic down to cover just your face go for it, but make sure to cover your entire field of vision.  Any open areas on sides/top/bottom will be very distracting.

Make a template with a piece of paper, place it on your helmet and trim or trace the outline you want.  Apply the template to the graphic and cut it out.

Good luck,

- Will

got mine the other day...put it on a few nights ago.  i did a pretty good job of installing i think...but ended up with a couple wrinkles still.  hopefully though they will just stay small.  but otherwise it went fairly smooth.

the one thing i noticed was the clear vinyl seemed not as clear as i was hoping when wearing it...vision is slightly hazy.  getting the hang of seeing through the perforations is easy enough, but the small amount of haziness does make it a bit more challenging.  definitely not something you want to be caught riding with during the nighttime...

Put mine on today.  If the material had been a bit taller, it would have wrapped beautifully on my HJC CL-SP, with almost no distortion.  But, because it was relatively short top to bottom, I had to either leave the rear sides (where the visor mounts) uncovered, or work at an angle that completely covered the sides, but distorted the whole strip of smiley material with respect to the surface of the visor.  I chose the latter, though it meant lots more work going after wrinkles and bubbles, and a 45 minute install instead of a 2 minute install.  Still, I'm happy with the result.

I agree with the laminate creating a haze.  It is optically clear before it is applied to the vinyl, but the heat used to apply it, as well as heating it when we install it on our visors, causes distortion.  The laminate was intended to preserve the graphic and ease cleaning because it would not allow debris to get trapped in the perforations.  The laminated graphic will last forever, but if you don't feel comfortable riding with it its not worth it.  I am printing the second batch Monday, and I'm going to forgo the lamination process.  I want to ride with it for awhile to see how it performs.

Let me know when that laminated batch is ready... I have no issues with the perforations but its the lamination that makes it hard to see.

I totally understand the need for the lamination if the application was for the long haul.

If the vinyl had been 6.5" overall height, with that extra material added ONLY to the top (above the eyes) to make it so, it would have been perfect for my application.

Okay, I think I have come up with a solution.  The laminate does not come off the graphic.  The two materials are heated(melted almost) together.  We could do a clear vinyl separately, like tear offs racers use, but there would still be distortion because the clear layer would be held off the visor by the perforations, creating a space and haziness.  Personally, I haven't tried it, but I doubt its worth the hassle.

Solution:  I have found clear protective gel that can be sprayed over the graphic during production.  This will protect the ink, but the perforations remain clear.  I also added an inch to the top to aid installation.

Thanks for your input guys!  Printing the new batch today.

entertaining previous customer discounts for those that want to try out your verson 2.0?  don't get me wrong, it's very high quality, and even my poor sticker application skills were good enough to apply it; i think it would last for a long time.  but that said, i felt unsafe enough that i went out the very next day and bought more visors, as i didn't think this would be smart to be a "daily driver".

somehow, i don't think so.

everyone i've show these pics to breaks out laughing.  it is hard to feel aggressive with that look on your helmet.

part of the problem riding with a full-faced helmet is people can't see your face and know if you're smiling or frowning or if you're an alien or whathaveyou.  wearing this decal makes people think you're smiling.

it certainly cracks me up every time i look at them.

Yeah, I'm incredulous about that.  Rather, I think it's one reason for John E. Law to give a pass to ALL THE OTHER STUPID STUFF I do that makes him want to pull me over and harass me.

Actually, I look like an old dude (that is, the old dude that I am) even when I'm fully geared up.  I'm convinced this is why I've NOT been pulled over on a number of occasions when I should have.

I finally got around to putting mine on today.  I have the same helmet as Trenner (HJC CL-SP), and I had the same issue with the decal not being quite tall enough.  I chose the other option though, and cut off the back ends.

Here's as close to the top of my visor as I could get it:

Good job with the install Paegelow!  The new batch has been sent out six people so far.  It is an inch taller to correct the issue trenner and Paegelow experienced.  It is not laminated to correct the haziness that many experienced, but is protected instead by a UV resistant gel coat that does not interfere with the perforations.  I have ridden with it for the past week, and I am very happy with the new design.

As a bonus, not having the laminate makes the install much easier.  You have about 5,000 perforations working with you to keep the wrinkles out.

I look forward to hearing from the guys that just received the new batch.

I have incorporated the visor graphics into my website with more designs coming soon.  The site will focus on photographs of early motor sport.  The site is still in its infancy, and I am adding content daily.  I have about 500 images to process and add to the site.  It is a daunting task at times with late nights.....(as I post at 2:45am).  I am learning a lot about early racing history, the machines, and the men that pioneered some of the technology we ride on today.  Some of these guys make modern day racers look like pansies!!!  100mph on a board track with no brakes or throttle control....(they just ran the carbs wide open and held on for dear life)  :o  Let me know if there is something specific you would like to see.

The site is not compatible with Internet Explorer right now, as there is a bug in the code I haven't worked out yet.  DMF members receive 20% off and all members that joined before April 1st get the Lego graphic for $25 shipped.  During the order process include your DMF screen name at payment, and I will refund the difference the next day.

It has been a lot of fun working with everyone.

Thank you for all your support guys!

Thanks!  I finally went out for a ride with it, and got a lot of goofy looks ;D   It was kind of hard to see though.  Like areas where I know there's usually gravel and crap in the road, but i couldn't really see it, that was kind of terrifying!  I might be interested in the non-laminated version.

What was the date you placed the order?  Or lift one of the edges from the backing paper and look at the perforations.  You should be able to see if it is laminated(old) or not(new).

I installed mine few weeks ago so I'm assuming I have one from the original run. It looks cool but is in no way safe to ride in. I took a morning ride down town for some coffee though down town Annapolis one Sunday morning. Everytime I was was headed into the low morning sun I couldn't see a damn thing.  Small objects in the road are also very hard to see.

I peeled it off for the ride home :'(

Does the newer material have this problem?

Mike

I'm sorry you experienced that Mike.  The heat process when applying the laminate to the graphic causes the once optically clear material to distort slightly on some of the vinyl.

The new design is not laminated, therefore you have an unobstructed view through the 6,000+ perforations.  The material is still protected from UV rays and scratches with a clear gel coating sprayed on during printing.  This coating does not interfere with visibility.

You will still be affected by the sun because you are wearing a clear visor, but you could try a SLIGHTLY tinted shield or sunglasses.

Got mine, installed and tried a ride. It felt like I was riding without my contacts. Scared the hell outta me. Had to swap back to a normal visor. It's a shame because I love the look. But, I can't even read the gauges.

i took the bike out with the helmet at night time....MUCH easier, everythings already dark so you dont even see the black dots... didnt have any issues. i also have a non laminated one.

hard to say, everyones eyes are different, i tried riding with glasses on ( i ave -2.5 in each eye) and it was impossible, with contacts in, it was fine. You just have to mentally take a note and remember to not try and focus on the dots, cause once you do, youll find it impossible to not focus on them.

I think for the sake of art, this thing is great. But for every day usability, it would need to larger preforations, but it takes away from the hilarity of it. which is why i only wear the vinyl commuting around town. serious jaunts = clear visor.

The BackPack I wear is a repsol replica hardpack that gets a lot of attention on the freeway (the good kind), and the giant plastic shell works awesome with the lego visor. The other day I got a whole bus full of kids waving at me on the freeway. It was great!

The new version is definitely an improvement. The bright sunlight is its only weakness. I was dubbed "Legoman" at the elementary school I was doing field work in. The teacher I worked with gave serious thought to returning to motorcycling, but his wife (who taught in the class next door) felt the subject needed further discussion.  >:(

I'm still getting used to the dots and I have found they can be a bit hynotizing. A couple of times I seem to almost forget how close I am to things and catch myself using the brakes a bit abruptly...just need to practice I guess.
