Title: Tassie Monster - The Thylacine has new paws. Post by: Yellow Meanie on February 18, 2009, 11:49:08 PM Hi everyone,
Dave here from the Apple Isle. ;D I've only had the bike a little while, and the mods are starting to happen pretty quickly. So I thought I'd document everything here so that I can have a bit of a history of my new machine. And I'm sure I'll get heaps of advice from you lot as well! So here she is when I first picked her up in Brisbane: (http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/21112008224.jpg) (http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/21112008225.jpg) I then rode back down the coast via the Princess Highway, which was a very nice ride. When I had my yellow VTR 1000 I was sick of being attacked by the little critters when pulled up at the lights, and scrambling to find neutral and closing my visor before one got in and cracked the shits!! [roll] ;) I still reckon yellow is a top colour though [moto] Title: Re: Tassie Monster? Devil. No it's yellow, must be a Thylacine. This one was a great deal, and now that I've had it a while I love the Yellow [thumbsup] I picked up a great little tail bag from aussiebiker.com.au (http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/07022009263.jpg) And some Puma boots from thehelmetwarehouse.com.au (http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/19022009314.jpg) Title: Re: Tassie Monster? Mivv carbon lowmounts supplied by Carl from bikemonkey.com.au Carl's service is first class, and his price was better than any of the Yanks too! They took less than 3 weeks to arrive, which I reckon was great as they were a special order from Italy. (http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/19022009310.jpg) Yeah, I know the pic is a bit crappy. Title: Re: Tassie Monster? Devil. No it's yellow, must be a Thylacine. Post by: Yellow Meanie on February 22, 2009, 03:20:35 AM Thanks Bazz, I'm very happy with them. They look great, they're very well made and sound real "deep and growly" too ;D
I haven't taken the baffles out yet, but even now they sound heaps better then the stock cans. And yeah, the dunlops are still scaring the shit out of me each time go for a ride :o The bloke out at Scottsdale quoted me $235/$315 for standard Pilot Powers, and $285/$377 for 2CT PP's. I changed my belts today too - pretty bloody easy if you ask me... And now that I'm looking at the photo, I see that my battery is a bit low too! (http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/22022009322.jpg) I was going to paint the belt covers black.... but it was such a nice day I decided to go for a ride up to beaconsfield and back through Frankford. Nice little set of twistys there near "Kelly's Lookout" [thumbsup] Title: Re: Tassie Monster? Devil. No it's yellow, must be a Thylacine. Title: Re: Tassie Monster? Devil. No it's yellow, must be a Thylacine. Post by: Yellow Meanie on February 22, 2009, 03:48:25 AM Oh yeah, they're still loose in the pic. I tightened them up after that.
I did the old - 5mm allen key on the horizontal / and 6mm on the vertical trick. I did about 100km today and she ran pretty well, I will check them again in the morning though. I might have to do a bit more "reconnaissance" out that way, to find out where the good roads are. Title: Re: Tassie Monster? Devil. No it's yellow, must be a Thylacine. Title: Re: Tassie Monster? Devil. No it's yellow, must be a Thylacine. Post by: Yellow Meanie on February 24, 2009, 12:05:46 AM Changed my plugs and fuel filter today.
The old filter had '98 stamped on it, so obviously it was due to be changed [roll] Wasn't that a bastard of a job - trying to get my arm into the tank to pull out the filter. Then it took me a good half hour to work out how the filter was actually mounted in there. When I did work it out, it was actually quite easy though ;) Here's what the old plugs looked like. The outside of them is actually quite clean, which leads me to believe that they are fairly new. As you can see the tops of the plugs are really black - running a bit rich? What do you guys reckon? (http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/24022009329.jpg) Then I removed the baffles from the MiVV's.... Man - they are LOUD But still sound sweeeeeet. When I first started her up, I thought "holy shit - that's loud". The bike sounds totally different now. Heaps louder, heaps deeper, heaps nastier, now I really do feel like a hooligan ;D At idle, the ground trembles beneath me... Cruising along around 3000-3500 rpm, the deep deep Ducati twin sounds spectacular... When "giving her some" I'm surprised the bitumen beneath me doesn't shatter into a million pieces as I literally tear along... The grumble on deceleration is just sublime... And the little "bop" when blipping the throttle on down-shift makes men turn their heads, and makes women think "who is that bad-ass on the motorcycle" :-* My flatmate was driving the other way on the highway this arvo. As we passed he said to his girlfriend "I gotta admit, Davo's bike does sound bloody cool" hehe [cheeky] Title: Re: Tassie Monster? Devil. No it's yellow, must be a Thylacine. Post by: Jukie on February 24, 2009, 12:39:48 AM yes the plugs look a bit wet. running a bit rich there Mr meanie. but glad you took those baffles out, aaahh the sweet sound i can hear them from here.

Dave the best bloke for anything Ducati mechanically is Ross Alison, I am sure you know that thou [thumbsup] He is the best and knows Ducatis inside out, he is down near Coats Patons old building in case you didn't know. I got my tyres thru him and he was the best price for the 2ct Pilot powers. EGAS Title: Re: Tassie Monster? Devil. No it's yellow, must be a Thylacine. For some reason my camera keeps shutting down. I think it is moving around too much, as I only have it strapped onto the top of the tank bag. Hey Bazz, that road looks familiar - St. Hellen's? And Betty - double lines down here mean: bikes can takeover, but cars can't [cheeky] Title: Re: Tassie Monster? Devil. No it's yellow, must be a Thylacine. Post by: Betty on February 27, 2009, 02:39:08 AM And Betty - double lines down here mean: bikes can takeover, but cars can't [cheeky] Yeah but it also seems the car drivers don't mind having the whole of their vehicle on the wrong side of the road ... around a corner! Title: Re: Tassie Monster? Devil. No it's yellow, must be a Thylacine. Post by: Yellow Meanie on March 01, 2009, 10:29:19 PM Bugger >:(
Bloody top triple doesn't fit :'( (http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/02032009333.jpg) (http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/02032009332.jpg) The diameter of the middle hole is way too large and off centre from the original. And it will hit the frame near the ignition. Anyone got any other ideas? Title: Re: Tassie Monster? Devil. No it's yellow, must be a Thylacine. Post by: Yellow Meanie on March 11, 2009, 12:02:11 AM So, the triple and bars have been sent back to Spider. :(
Thanks for trying anyway mate, at least we know now, that they don't fit [thumbsup] I've ordered a "blemished" Cyclecat top triple from Ca-Cycleworks. It was pretty cheap, and I'll polish it or powdercoat it or something. Then I just have to decide on which clip-ons. I'm thinking about the Speedymoto Tall-Boys, but they are a lot of $$$$ :-\ Or then there's the Swatt Moto clip-ons too. I want some with a bit of rise. But I do like the adjustable down angle of the Speedy's :-\ The new bar end mirrors are on. I love 'em! Not only do they look cool, but the vision from them is soooooooo much better than the stock mirrors. Eg. from the left mirror, I can see the lane behind me and the lane to the left of me, vice versa for the right. They are slightly convex so objects in mirror are actually closer than they appear. I've done a little painting too. Belt covers, sprocket cover and headlight brackets have all been painted black. And then there's the clutch... Stock cover from Spider has been drilled, cut, dremelled, filed and painted. Pressure plate has also been painted - I don't know how long it will last though, might have to get it powdercoated. Springs were soaked overnight in coke (yes CocaCola, it's really acidic) then hit with the wire wheel to get rid of all the rust. Spring caps were also hit with the wire wheel. (I do however, have stainless springs and gold caps coming with the top triple) ;D (http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/11032009382.jpg) My gauge housing was also cracked. So I pulled it apart, glued it up, and painted it the same black as the belt covers. While the front end was apart, I moved the front indicators down a little, cleaned up some of the wiring, and cleaned out a lot of bugs ;) Oh, and I inspected and greased the speedo cable, and changed all brake and clutch fluids. AND cleaned out a whole lot of crap from behind the front sprocket. Whoa - busy day... Time for a few [drink] Title: Re: Tassie Monster? Devil. No it's yellow, must be a Thylacine. Within an hour I received a PM from CannedIce saying my parts had been shipped! Then they arrived today. That's less than 7 working days for delivery from the States :o I'm very impressed with CannedIce and Ca-Cycleworks [thumbsup] Goodness me Dave you are getting worse than me with the bling, bling, now I know why you are so busy on your days off ;D EGAS Title: Re: Tassie Monster? Devil. No it's yellow, must be a Thylacine. Post by: Yellow Meanie on March 14, 2009, 02:16:14 AM Went for a ride yesterday.
Launnie to Campbeltown down the unmentionable highway :-[, then turned left onto Lake Leake Road. I've heard riders say it's the best road in Tassie. Never having even driven it in my car, I had high expectations. Well... I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't real impressed either :-\ The road surface is quite nice, but nothing special. Traffic was low, especially being a weekday. Corners were mostly long, wide sweepers. Which are fine if you're on a 1098 @ a constant speed of 150+. Some people might go for that sort of thing, but I don't really think it's suited to the Monster, or to my keeping my licence either ;) So yeah, nice road, not bad, but certainly not the best road in Tassie. I turned left onto the Tasman Highway (A3) and headed through Cranbrook to Bicheno. I thought this 32km stretch was more entertaining than the 57kms of LL Rd [cheeky]. Here's the view down towards Freycinet: (http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/IMGP2255.jpg) As I approached Bicheno, the temperature dropped significantly. The town was covered in a thick blanket of sea fog. [moto] I can just imagine the pedestrians now, peering into the fog, "What is that noise?" Suddenly a light appears, followed by a bright yellow blur, and the almighty roar of the Mivvs [evil] Actually, Bicheno is a quiet little seaside town. I just "burbled" through at less than 50 [cheeky] A few minutes North is the turn off to St. Mary's, via Elephant Pass [moto] The first half is a very nice surfaced, tight, twisty, dual lane mountain pass. Beware of fallen rocks and on-coming traffic crossing the unbroken double lines :o. The "face" of the pass faces North so the road is well lit during the day. The second half there is no centre line. The road narrows and the shoulders are, well, gravelly. As the altitude increases the road begins to follow the Southern side of Mt. Elephant. Most of the tight left handers were hidden in shadow, many were wet. There's a couple of right hand 180* switchbacks. [thumbsup] Near the top is the World Famous Elephant Pancake Shop! St Mary's is a nice little place. Bazz and I have had a couple of [beer] there. Just before the fun begins again, there is a little park. I thought I'd take a couple more snaps. (http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/IMGP2262.jpg) (http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/IMGP2263.jpg) Ohh - yeah, check out tha bling to be continued... I think the triple is too chunky to have clip-ons with risers in front of the triple. They are also around the height that I want too. In any case, I go back to sea tomorrow, so I've got 6 weeks to decide :-\ Title: Re: Tassie Monster? Devil. No it's yellow, must be a Thylacine. Yes Egas, she is safely locked away. Did you ever watch "Get Smart"? Where he walks through heaps of thick steel doors that slam shut behind him? I'd like to put the fairing back on, but at the moment the brake and clutch masters are in the way. Maybe if I made up new brackets to move the headlight forward it could fit. Mmick Title: Re: Tassie Monster - The Thylacine just got a whole lot meaner. Post by: Yellow Meanie on September 25, 2009, 03:26:27 AM At 2:00 this arvo, I officially became a home owner ;D
This morning I hired a "Budget" truck, the one with the powerlift platform on the back. The truck didn't have any tie down points on the deck, but it did have some down fairly low. Just in case, I removed the rear cowl, pipes, foot pegs and controls. I really didn't want to bend any bling ;) I wanted to get the bike in first, so I backed her up onto the lift platform. She sat diagonal across it, and only just fit. My mate Riley had the control for the hydraulics, and he lifted me up (on the bike) in a not so smooth kind of way :-\ Yes I was shitting myself. :o So here we were, I was on the bike with the front wheel only just on the outside corner of the platform, and Riley had a hold of the rear of the bike. He had to bounce the rear end around enough so I could back her into the truck the rest of the way. Once she was in and centered, we strapped her down. (http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/25092009216.jpg) Then I got all my boxes that were full of soft stuff, and put them down either side. So if the bike did decide to lie down on the trip South, hopefully she would land on a nice soft bit of cardboard. ;) Then I filled the rest of the truck with my other crap ;D (http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/25092009218.jpg) When we unloaded, I parked the truck across the street on the flat ground to unload the bike. We wiggled / bounced the bike back around into position. I told Riley to lower me all the way, in one fowl swoop "Don't stop until the platform hits the bitumen". This way worked much better. Because we were across the street his meant I had to start her up and ride up the driveway. Riley said: "Don't you need exhaust pipes or something?" I said: "Nah she'll just be farken loud!" Actually she wasn't much louder than normal (if at all). I rode up into the garage, then walked back across the street. "Sounded like a bloody Harley, I'm embarrassed" I said :-[ [laugh] [laugh] Tomorrow, the bling goes back on, and I set up the workshop. I'll buy furniture next week... Isn't it funny that in a small place like Tassie we are so parochial. We are not really that far apart in mainland terms. Title: Re: Tassie Monster - The Thylacine has a new lair. Post by: Yellow Meanie on October 01, 2009, 11:53:26 PM A couple of pics from my ride the other day :D

Here's one that some nice fella took of me though ;) (http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/Dave.jpg) I got my Tassie plate and rego sticker the other day. The plate is blue and white :-\. The blue doesn't match anything on the bike at all. I think I'll have to get a black and white personalised plate to replace it. Unfortunately in Tassie we can only get "ABC12" or "AB123" so the choices are a bit limited. The rego sticker, on the other hand, is perfect. It's brown and yellow, and has a picture of a Thylacine on it! :) :D ;D Title: Re: Tassie Monster - The Thylacine has a new lair. New rubber ;D I was going to get Pirelli's, but there was a 2 week wait to get them in. With the old Dunlop rear down to the wire, and all this beautiful weather, I needed tyres NOW!!! They had a couple of 2CT's on the shelf, so I said "chuck em on". I am very happy with them :D Title: Re: Tassie Monster - The Thylacine has new paws. Post by: Jukie on December 27, 2009, 09:16:52 AM cool thats good to know, Betty and i will need some new ones when we get back from turismo
Title: Re: Tassie Monster - The Thylacine has new paws. Post by: heatherp on December 27, 2009, 09:31:45 AM Jukie (& Betty) - just a thought - you may want to put new tyres on to do Turismo. I know from previous experience that the Tassie roads are pretty harsh on tyres (I mean that in the nicest possible way :-*) Also carrying luggage adds to the the wear. Have you looked at the safety inspection sheet yet? It asks for 75% tread at the start (what you have left at the end is up to you [laugh])
I'm planning on doing lots of riding between then and now to use up the current back tyre so that I can put a new one on just before turismo. Dave - scuse my ignorance but what are 2CT please? Turning into a corner on the old tyres, she used to kick and buck and protest and just not want to turn at all. I really had to wrestle her into the corners. Now she is much happier :D I can hear her mid corner "Come on Mr. Meanie, faster faster, lean more" The old rear was a 180/55, the new one is a 170/60. Now that I have the correct profile, it has totally transformed the bike's handling. Soooo much more stable in the corners. I can't wait to get her on the track [evil] I've almost reached the little Michelin Man on the edge of the tyre. After my track day, in a couple of weeks, he'll be goooooone.... ;D Title: Re: Tassie Monster - The Thylacine has new paws.
