Once I get my pilot's license I think I'm going to reward myself with a new monster. I'm not sure what kind I want though. I liked the way the s2r's looked and the fact they probably not that heavy. I've been totally out of the loop though since those first came out. How are the new monsters? I think they look a little weird.
S4r? I've never driven one, or any other monster besides my 750, so i have nothing to compare it to. Anyone live near St. Louis that can let me test ride something else?
well, can someone just point me to a thread that compares the new ducati models with, say the s2r, s4r, etc? I can't find any.
I don't remember a good comparisons anywhere on the DMF. I've got a model comparison FAQ half-written (along with about a dozen others). [roll] Here's a quick summary. It won't tell you anything about the differences in riding or handling, but may give you a starting point.
This generation: 696 and the 1100. They have a half-trellis frame and other major differences from prior monsters. There's also the streetfighter, a 1098 engine in an entirely new chasis. I wrote up a review of the 1100 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=13509.0) and compared it--in part--to a s2r 1000 if you're interested. There are a number of 696 reviews floating around and some of those may compare to prior models.
Prior generation: the S*R line, with the 695 as the 'classic' styled monster
s2r (800cc) (05?-08)-- ST based frame, single sided swingarm, wet clutch
s2r1000 (06-08) -- ST based frame, SSS, dry clutch, 1000 dual spark motor.
s4rs (07-08) -- ST based frame, SSS, 999 testastretta motor, dry clutch, ohlins, radial brakes
s4rT (07-08) -- ST based frame, SSS, 999 testatstretta moto, dry clutch, radial brakes
s4r (04-06) -- ST based frame, single sided swingarm, 996 motor, dry clutch. This was replaced by the upgraded s4rs/s4rt with the 999 motor.
At the same time as the S*r line, there was 695. ST-based frame, DSS, wet clutch, 695 cc motor. Basically, it was a 620 with a bigger motor.
Two generations ago:
Prior to the S2r 1000, there was the M1000 (03-05). St-based frame, DSS, 1000DS, dry clutch.
Prior to the S2r 800, there was the m800 (03-04?). ST based frame, 800cc, DSS, wet clutch.
Prior to the 695, there was the 620 (02-05?). ST based frame, 620cc, DSS, wet clutch.
Prior to the S4r, there was the s4. St based frame, 916 motor, DSS, dry clutch
Your 750 was likely at least one generation prior, using the 888 based frame, back when monsters came in two flavors: 750 and 900. It was probably carbed, and may have had a single front disk.
S2R 1000 ~ 900 Monster + some torque and a single-sided swingarm. The DS1000 engine just PULLS. You'll need to re-gear to use 5th or 6th legally.
S4R = Longer arms. They'll stretch under that much and power. From what I gather, their mileage/range is not so great, but the riding experience makes up for it.
New Monsters = Tons of fun, and prettier in person than on the interwebs. Chances are if you ride one, you'll like it. Especially an 1100S.
Wish I had more info for you. :-\
You might checkout webbikeworld.com They compare evetthing motorcycle. Dolph :)
the new monsters are really growing on me. They're damn expensive though. Over 10k for the 1000 geez. But damn, I'd actually OWN one. Can't put a price tag on that.
I had an 07 S2R 800 and I can tell you I test drove the new 696 and it felt weak and small.. I test drove the new Monster 1100S and ultimately bought it.. Didn't hesitate one bit.. the 1100S is simply unreal monster...
PS I am one of the few which I guess really likes the new design of the monsters... I'm not so fond of streetfighter reminds me the Brutale 910S way too much...
good luck whatever you chose, but you definitely need to test drive them!!

If you were close to Atlanta, you could come ride my S4R . Quite a lot of fun, got rid of the SBK because of it (tear).
Congrats on the pilots license btw. If in the future you are ever flying through the atlanta area and talking with atlanta center, you'll have to ask for me :)
It's been way to long since I've been in an airplane. I think my bi-annual was due 4 year ago [laugh] [laugh]

Which Pilot License are you working on?

He said something about his helicopter license in his first post back to the board.

Actually, you're wrong.. Price wise, most MV Agusta dealers discount the 08 models to $500 above invoice which is roughtly $11.5-$12K so I would have saved over 2.5K over my M1100S
The brutale looks awesome but it's a very small bike for me.. I'm 6.2 and looks like I'm riding a toy rather than a bike.. Initially i wanted the 750S then the 910S then it became the 910R. My buddy has a Tamburini so i'm awfully familiar with them, but prefer the throaty sound of Ducati vs high pitch Agusta...
I have an 05 S4R I 'd like to compare it to the 1000s. maybe ill stop by my local dealer and take one for a test ride.

Hello from Jetlink [thumbsup]
well, I still need to take my practical. I'll have met all my requirements this saturday once I do another solo cross country. I think that practical must take your skill level done a few notches because of the pressure.
For the practical test all I can say is relax. I know it's a stressful time. I am assuming that this is a private checkride and that it is your first. I have taken at least 20 checkrides so far and the one thing I have learned is to relax. You would not be sitting in front of an examiner if you were not ready. You know all the answers and you can fly the aircraft, so just relax, be yourself and pay attention to the little details.
I rode an M1100s and an 08 910r back to back last week. And I'm still undecided.
The MV was a beast. Way more bike than I'm used to (I'm coming from an 05 M620). The smallest twitch of the wrist and it takes off. Ergonomically, it worked for me (5'9", 140) just fine.
Then I hopped on the M1100s, and it was like putting on a pair of old slippers. More power than the 620 (clearly) but not in a way that made my uncomfortable. Good power delivery across the band. And the seat and riding position just felt right. That, and the sound from the termis was heaven itself.
Bottom line, the Duc was a great ride, but I can see the 910r being more fun down the road. That, and with the M1100 after all the add-ons (termis, tail chop, clutch cover blah blah blah) I'd be pushing $18k (!!!) where the 910r would only set my back $15k.
If only the Brut sounded like a duc......
originally I was after a 750S then a 910S (great deals can be had on 08s brand new around $500 over invoice aka $11.5K!) then a 910R.. For me the Agusta felt awfully small and this is coming from someone with access to an MV f4 Tamburini ;) I ended up getting the 1100S with the termis + ECU and you're right it was much more than either Brutale but well worth the money ;)
PS I'm 6.04 / 200lbs
