Sadness, deep incredible sadness...........
I just talked to M1 Tanker/Speedtrpl who posted a bad bad email...I called Cath (S/O) and he's gone from us.....
Here's what is known right now....
Out riding alone on 337, he was found lying in the middle of the road with his bike late yesterday afternoon, apparently on his way home, from a usual (for him) Sunday ride..... The pickup truck driver that found him could find no deer or animal collision evidence. Life Flighted to San Antonio Hospital where he expired in transit......His helmet was apparently unmarred, was wearing full gear as he always did, but Cath states he most likely died due to internal injuries/bleeding.
God Speed Rich......you went out doing exactly what you loved to do.......riding your Ducati on your favorite stretch of tarmac.....
And knowing Rich, he's on that Italian road right now on his dream 1098s, spliffed out in full Dainese (of course) and laughing at all of us now that he's found perfect traction, suspension compliance and throttle control...
Cath will be @ Mings Wed night to help celebrate his life......please make time to stop by.........watch this space for any updated information

Very strange!
All I can think of, is that he tried to avoid something like an animal or possibly an oncoming driver in his lane, and he wrecked while trying to avoid a collision.
Very sad day indeed.
RIP Rich
Sad sad news. not even sure what to say. This sucks
RIP :'(
Heartwrenching.
God Speed Rich.

I'm so sorry to hear this. :-\
My condolences to his friends and family.
Rich was a good guy and will be missed.
damn guys, I am really upset about this. Rich was such a cool guy. I had alot of fun riding with him and chatting with him. Alot of good memories. I'll dig through my photos when I get home tonight- but if anyone has more to post up- please do so.
I'll raise a glass for him tonight. At least he went out doing what he loved.
-Tony
I'm very sorry for the loss. I unfortunately cannot make it on Wednesday, but if there's any way we can help if we are not in the Austin area, please pass that information on to us.
Wow. I unfortunately didn't get to meet him, but my prayers will be with him and Cath. Please keep us posted if anything else surfaces as to what happened.
Damn, what a tragedy. His family will surely be in all our hearts.
+1 on what David said to please let us know if there is anything we can do from the Houston area and please keep us updated on services so we can at least send our condolences if not be there in person.
Saw Rich as recently as the Motorcycle show here in Houston. Rest in peace Rich. [moto]
RIP. damn, i can't think of anything to say besides...
There's nothing I can say about Rich that hasn't already been said. Great guy, cool guy, loved riding,....
Only thing I can add is:
+11ty billion :'(
I am saddened to hear about his passing.
Ride with the angels Rich. When I'm on 2 wheels I'll be thinking of you.
This is a sad day for the THCM. Rich will be missed by all. Rip.

Always and I mean always offered his helping hand......

Damn, Paul, very sad news to hear.
An easy-going guy and a diligent rider.
My sincere condolences goes out to his family.
God this is terrible news. I will keep him and his family in my thoughts.
Jesus I step away from the board a couple days and come back to this!
just make the beast with two backsing horrible... I really liked Rich... dont mind saying he was my favorite out of all you putzes at Ming's....
My heart hurts. It seems unreal - ever hoping it is just a bad joke gone wrong.
Godspeed Rich. You will be missed. :'(
See y'all on Wednesday.
Does anyone know if this has been documented in the paper yet?
Cathy is throwing a PARTY for Rich this Thursday from 5pm-9pm at One World Theater.
www.OneWorldTheatre.org (http://www.oneworldtheatre.org)
EVERYONE is invited and she really wants it to be a CELEBRATION so there's going to be plenty of food and drink.
Cathy might not be able to make it to Mings tomorrow so she asked I let everyone know today.
If anything changes I'll re-post ASAP.
sorry to hear about this, Godspeed Rich
The outpouring of love here is amazing...........
Cathy told me she wants to see the posts...."all of them - every one of them"
She also mentioned she was thankful for all of us.........we were all such a big part in his life...that we meant so much to him........kind words for sure, THCM....
Remember when he tried to get his knee down and he was so far away I had to Photoshop more lean angle!

GoneApe, any info on funeral arrangements?
Mike I forgot about that one. That was classic [laugh] Actually we talked about that day last week at Mings. We were laughing about how after running the roundabout everyone was pulling wheelies in the parking lot.
Mike, that's awesome. [clap]
Few things make me speechless - I can't tell you how many posts I've typed... then deleted... then typed again.
There just aren't the words. Rich, thank you. See you on the other side.
So Paul is Mings still on or should I attend the party at the theater instead?

Mike, that pic is awesome!!! ;D ;D [laugh] [laugh] [bow_down]
Photoshop was the only way he was gonna get that knee down!!! ( I should talk, right? [roll])
haven't been to mings in a while and bike is down right now, but will try to stop by briefly in honor of Rich
RIP Rich
What an absolutely fantastic bike night...
Thanks guys and dolls. Y'all are awesome. Yeah, yeah... you too Paul [laugh]
It was good to finally meet some of you last night. Was a great bike night. [thumbsup]
This is very hard to hear. We all take chances when we get on our bikes. Be careful out there.
I heard about this through a friend. I met Rich a couple of times at Mings and on one ride out East toward Caldwell. Somehow I was volunteered to lead that ride, thanks Paul. It was a lot of fun.
The few times I met Rich, he was very nice and seemed considerate of others. I knew he was a person that would do anything for anyone.
RIP Rich.
it was good to see everyone last night and nice meeting the new (to me) faces (ducaholic et al)
thanks Paul (and everyone else involved) for putting this together
thoughts and prayers are with Rich's family
Houston....HOUSTON !!!!! This Beer's for you!!!! [drink] [beer]
Class Act my friends, thank you very much for the flower arrangement you guys sent over....beautiful, tasteful, and they accompanied the "Missing Man Chair" we ceremonially left open for our fallen friend.......(we punked him by turning him away from the passing scenery!!!)
BIG turnout....laughter broke the back of the blues....sometimes, you've just "got to, mister".......hell, Rich wouldn't have wanted it any other way....
Clearly, Fai and his restaraunt are far more valuable than just a place to go....it bonds all of us here in Austin with a common weave......sort of ointment attracting the flies, if you will......hell, Jon rode up all the way from S/A....STUD!!!
Moira, you made a potentially bad sad evening into a fun time for me ..thank you for being there......
It was great to really feel the "positive" vibe....smiling solemnly, but outright bursts of laughter and crappy cap-on joking finally took over......just like it always does on Wed nights.......the beat truly does go on........

It was well worth the ride to see yall and to pay some tribute. Everybody was smiling and the attitude was upbeat.

Sorry for not being able to make it out there. Glad the flower arrangement made it out there. A few of the Houston folks and I felt this was the least we could do.
Any talk of a commemorative ride to 337 for Rich any time soon? [thumbsup] I'd definitely pencil that in to my busy schedule. [moto]

man, I switched jobs recently and havent been on lately. Im very sad to hear about Rich. He was a great guy. I was on a few rides with him, out to the Houston show and several hillcountry rides. Rest in peace Rich.
* I would have liked to be at Mings, but didnt hear until today. Please let me know if you ride that road in memory or Rich. Thank you.
I've been away from the boards for a little bit... this really is quite sad to hear about. I never met Rich but my heart and prayers go out to his family. The outpouring of love speaks volumes to the man and this community. [clap]
Sounds like a warm time was had by all in memory of Rich last week. Very glad to hear so.
Sorry I couldn't make it. We felt it was the least we could do in sending the arrangement.
My prayers go out to Rich, Cathy and their families. I worked w/ Rich and Cathy in Chicago / Optimus for five years. It was a time I will never forget...Rich had that way about him. My condolences to you, Cathy...
Saddened,
Sue Swiatowy Wolf
Been away.
Very sorry to hear news. Glad to see the community spirit only grow stronger in the wake of it.
Anyone know if the police concluded anything about the cause of the accident yet? It's maddening not knowing...
I agree Factor...also, was disappointed we could'nt 'honor' him with a THCM procession to his funeral. Although I know some families prefer it to be private...I respect that.
Just talked with Cathy about an hour ago....the official police report on the recently performed "re-creation" at the accident site has not been revealed at this time. So we still know nothing........

There was no typical *funeral*. There was a celebration of Rich's life, and it was done very much in his spirit.
I have come to understand something, in my years of losing friends to this hobby/passion/sport/lifestyle. There are very few instances where my knowing the full details matter. I was his friend, his riding buddy, a member at the same table at bike night, a fellow mini-driver, a fellow ducatisti, etc... but, I was not his wife, or family member. I don't mean to come off as callous - so please don't think it's that way... but we aren't those that NEED to know. We want to know, we'd like to know...
It is my hope those that NEED to know, get the information they need - and all the answers to their questions.
On another note, I found some pictures from the Ducati Trackday at Harris Hill last April:

very nice pics
I agree fully with Zoomie......nicely penned Moira....
I think we should always think of the life, the fun times, the corny jokes, and his obsession with obtaining the "right" bling for his riding experience and truly let go of the if's and the why's pertaining to our loss.......
not sure why you quoted my post, but I understand what you're saying as I too know people I've lost to motorcycling. I've also unfortunately had to handle doa bike accidents. I don't want to speak for Factor, but from a standpoint of knowing what happened, it's a valuable learning tool. Not knowing what happened to a fellow rider is like a MIA soldier. The camaraderie in motorcycling is evident when we wave to other riders we don't even know.
