Yes, that's right ladies and germs
I figured i would start a new thread for my Project Cafe.
i have always wanted to build a Cafe Racer, and now i'm building it...again.
It started off as a 1977 CB750k (SOHC) that had been laid down by a kid who didn't know how to put things back together.
he had the side covers (including alternator) off the bike and replacements ready to go on.
$400 later, a trip across town, and about 10 minutes of wrenching she was purring like a kitten in my garage.
then came the teardown
to sum things up, i purchased a tank off an earlier model (smaller) and polished it to a mirror shine. Something never quite seemed right though (besides the dent) and when i finally set it on the frame, i realized it was about 1" short than the stock one. ...anyone want to buy a polished tank?
I ended up purchasing another tank off of Ebay - this time a supersport tank - with the intent to polish it as well, but it turns out there was a pretty hefty dent in this as well. Oh well, i decided i would just paint it and continued the process.
i fabbed up a seat using expandable foam which i carved to the shape desired, then covered in Aluminum Tape and fiberglassed over. I removed the buddy pegs, and put on a Trail-Tech gauge.
when it came time to paint, i went to a local paint shop who puts "automotive paints in a rattle can" and purchased a nice gloss black
well, apparently me mentioning that this was going on a GAS tank never made them think to tell me that this paint isn't solvent proof - so first fill up it all went to hell.
and that's how it got to where it is now - after the gas ate the paint i gave the tank and seat to the painter formally known as Red Baron. There was a catch though, i wasn't allowed to know how it would be painted. Staring at the frame i decided that this fancy new paint job just wouldn't look right with a ratty frame and dirty engine, so i decided to do a proper tear-down and make the baby shine.

Don't judge it on such a small sample. You need to envision it on the whole bike. ;)

haha, it was good for what it was (though the seat hurt me bum). But with, what i can only assume will be a nice shiny new paint job, i figured the rest of the bike should be 'spruced up'

when i was building this thing the first time i noticed the kid did an ugly welding job on the muffler, figured i would replace it eventually and would just leave it for money's sake.
well cruising down the highway with a buddy following i noticed it got a little louder. He pulls up next to me and max an 'exploding' motion with his hand and point to my exhaust. Turns out my baffle shot out on the freeway!!
i continued riding it with no baffle - HOLY SWEET JIBBLY JESUS that thing is loud!
i could go through town and have people several blocks ahead of me turning around.
...oh and it shot sweet fireballs after that.
here is a quick photoshop i had done of my eventual goal (note... bike may be
PINK)
4-4 boom-tubes under the bike
Made a quick battery tray out of some steel sheet i had laying around.
Did this with tin snips and a vice - sure wish i had a sheet brake. Fortunately this should be the only thing i would need it for.
start off making a cardboard template
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v636/Deadmr2/CB750/DSCN5631.jpg)
transfer that to the sheet metal
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v636/Deadmr2/CB750/DSCN5635.jpg)
and viola!

i was originally planning on relocating the electronics under the seat hump - but it looks like i may be able to fit them in the tray with the battery [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

eh, you got time. I still need to get the oil tank, then comes the complete tear-down.
I wouldn't put the rectifier in the box with the battery, it gets hot
I would put the battery and the electronics in the hump :)

not sure the battery would fit - it's pretty tight back there
...plus i don't have the hump here for measuring
So what's the old Honda in the background. CT90/110 or what? Hard to tell. I can see the red covers over the shocks, unlike the exposed springs on the later 110s.
I may happen to be building one up here in Australia, see :).

Thought so... Frame design is the same as the later 90s and 110s. We still use 'em in Australia as motorbikes for the postal service. Rebuild details in link in my sig, but that one at least looks like a runner, as opposed to my ebay-jigsaw-puzzle special I have. 3 years after getting all the bits, at least mine starts and is close to being rideable...

hah
i wish it were a runner
this is one my father had sitting in his shed for 25 years... full of fuel.
You don' know varnish until your chipping it out like rock
i rebuilt the thing probably 4-5 times now, but everytime i get it running the damn thing seizes.
i'm currently looking at selling it or finding another engine
problem is every engine i find that has the trail-gears and honda-matic transmission is something like $900
i'll probably end up posting another thread when i decided to do the rebuild (again) on that guy

Hrrm. I actually have at least 2 other good CT110 motors I need to rebuild :). They're 4 speed centrifugal clutch, no hi/lo. Freight's not gonna be cheap to the states though. A fair proportion of the annoying parts to get came from the states though - mainly cause they're so freaking expensive here due to their cult status at the venerable postie bike.
I'd know varnish... I just rebuilt the carb for the one I have running. I coulda probably cleaned it out, but I just soaked the carb enough to get all the bits out and replaced them all with a carb kit.
The cb750 is a great base for a cafe project. Here's one that a friend of mine did about six years ago. Sorry about the small pic.

fabbed up some brackets to mount the rectifier, and the fuse block last night (under the tail).
still trying to finalize the oil-tank design - it's pretty small (1.75 qts), so i think i'm going to need an oil cooler as well
