Title: DMF Fundraising project Post by: dlearl476 on February 24, 2009, 06:10:31 AM Hi, my name is David and I'm one anal retentive MF.
I just found out in the course of my work, I'm going to need to buy a Brady Labeler. Being the schemer I am, the first thing that came to mind was that I could use it to make some really fancy labels for my bikes. Wires, tubes, lines, etc. The kind that make reassembly a no-brainer. I then realized, as long as I'm doing it..... I haven't got the software in my hot little hands yet, but from what I understand it imports info from MS Excel files. So here's what I'm proposing: anyone with a bike coming apart, or apart, or anyone with the knowlege to look at wiring diagram and make a list, make a list. Put it in an excel file. I'll make a list here of the bikes I have and the bikes I need, and we'll build a database. Once we get that, it will be a simple matter of printing out a complete set of labels for one model Ducati. As compensation, and to keep from running afoul of the "sponsor" ethics, etc. I'll do this for the price of the labels, shipping and handling, and a $10 donation to the site. I don't know what the labels cost yet, but I'm hoping I can make a set of labels for a single bike come in around $25. I'd also like to propose that anyone who emails me a complete Excel file for a model/year gets a free set of labels. Anyone interested? If you're up to making a list, here's how I'd like to format it, just like I do with the lines I do at work: Each line has two labels, one on each end. Take a simple example: Spark Plug wire. One end would be labeled "horizontal cyl spark plug from Right Ignition Coil" the other would be labeled "Right Ignition Coil to Horizontal Cylinder." Purposely, that's a really simple label for what's really a no-brainer anyway, but with other wires/lines it gets complicated fast. For instance, the 4 or 5 wires from the fuse block to the rear tail/brake/turn signal lights. "Fuse Block Terminal 4 to Brake Light" on one end, "Brake Light to Fuse Block Term. 4. etc. I work with systems that have 10,000-20,000 connections and we couldn't do it without labels. Working on bikes, with ~100, you wouldn't believe how much easier it gets. |
