Title: Took less than a week to get pulled over... Post by: goombah on February 24, 2009, 04:25:52 PM I got pulled over last night on the way home from work, the copper said my CRG barend mirrors were too small- they had to be at least 80mm across, and I had to put my original rear fender/mud guard back on- I've got the DP fender eliminator kit. Does anyone know where I can get a list or handbook that details all these kinda mods for motorcycles and what is or is not allowed? He also mentioned the DP led indicators were too small. Oh and he thought my 696 was a 1098... He also said something along the lines of "I'll stop complaining when you stop killing yourselves"... Yeah, cos I do that for fun almost every other day.
Title: Re: Took less than a week to get pulled over... Post by: vossy on February 24, 2009, 05:32:38 PM Sorry to hear of your woe.
I know in Sth Aust , the fender eliminator is a BIG no no. Was nailed twice on my old Gixxer. :'( That's interesting about the mirrors. ??? Sorry I can't help you with details of legal mods etc. Sounds like the copper was how would you say - not a motorcycle enthusiest. [leo] [bacon] Title: Re: Took less than a week to get pulled over... Post by: 748s on February 24, 2009, 05:40:28 PM somewhere in here http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/motor/design/adr_online.aspx (http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/motor/design/adr_online.aspx) is your answer
the rear mud guard must be past a 45 degree angle from the rear axle i wouldn't of thought a shorter rear mud guard was a short cut to death, i suppose road debris could hit you in the neck. i never rely on mirrors, don't like them much, i find it safer to look back, but that's me. The crg mirrors must be close to 80mm. did u get a warning or fined? bad luck coming across someone like that. Title: Re: Took less than a week to get pulled over... Post by: goombah on February 24, 2009, 06:11:24 PM I only got a warning, but he said if he sees me again he'll be issuing a workorder or fine or something... bad thing is I work next to the police traffic section... I park my bike about 100 metres away from where the traffic coppers park their bikes :P So it's not so much bad luck as it was an eventual inevitability... But having said that, I've had other cops look at my bike and comment on how good it looks... especially with the mirrors.
Yeah the CRG mirrors are 3", or 76.2mm. I'm going to see if I can get a permit for all this stuff. Thanks for the link, I'll have a look through it [thumbsup] Title: Re: Took less than a week to get pulled over... Post by: Big T on February 24, 2009, 06:55:29 PM Hey goombah bummer re getting accosted by the [leo].
Tail and mirrors are okay on my steed but the LCD indicators is interesting. [roll] What ones do you have??? Do you have a part number as I have some and would be interested to see if they are the same.... And thanks 748s for the link. Shall have to have a look... [thumbsup] Title: Re: Took less than a week to get pulled over... Post by: goombah on February 24, 2009, 07:05:41 PM What ones do you have??? Post by: dragonworld. on February 24, 2009, 08:31:40 PM I think the main issue with indicators is the distance apart and from the ground !! ???
I'm not 100% sure but he could be blowing it out his arse trying to intimidate the motorcyclist. [roll] The 45 degree thing is correct but with the additon that the bike is "loaded" when the height is taken. ;D The only time I've ever been hassled about rear guard height and indicators has been by car cops, who when asked "Do they ride" they give the"not bloody likely, not those deathtraps, etc, etc," So sometimes I think their knowledge pertaining to bikes is a bit, aaahm fanciful! Particularly if they think they are dealing with a Newbie. ;) The bike plods arnt fussed by stuff like that (generally) unless you've been making a cock of yerself. ;D Cars are running LED lights, so whats the problem??? Title: Re: Took less than a week to get pulled over... Post by: Spider on February 24, 2009, 09:06:38 PM what a great way to start getting a new cyclist to dislike police...well done!
76.3 vs 80mm......I bet I know where the frickin 3.7mm can be found...right down his trousers. frickin stupid....now if you're riding like an idiot....sure get the book out and charge away for 12 sided nuts when 6 is needed if the bloke was doing stoppies in peak hour traffic. But to get a new rider and go to town....not doing much for relations is it? Title: Re: Took less than a week to get pulled over... It was something! Title: Re: Took less than a week to get pulled over... Post by: Dannog on February 24, 2009, 10:51:37 PM The only time I've had a problem was when I was pulled over for doing an illegal left hand turn into a side street. Bloody hell I can't believe that it is illegal to turn left!
Anyway, the copper was booking me and started to ask about my open clutch. His opinion was that my wire cover was insufficient. He asked is it standard and I said yes. Well its standard if you by it from STM along with the pressure plate ;D ;D i guess he was happy enough giving me a fine for $198 and taking 3 points off my licence Title: Re: Took less than a week to get pulled over... Post by: Spider on February 24, 2009, 11:01:44 PM turning left?
mate, in Sydney I thought it was illegal if you were STRAIGHT. [laugh] [laugh] [laugh] (Vics, let's get together, wear black, drink coffee and talk badly about the Sydneysiders!) (again) ;D Title: Re: Took less than a week to get pulled over... Post by: goombah on February 24, 2009, 11:47:57 PM nah i wasn't being a cock on the ride, cos I usually pass a few cops down that particular stretch of road. Dunno what his issue was. Oh I forgot to tell you, after he gave me that stern talking to he, rode off and came to a T junction where he could only turn left since it had a median strip in between the two sides of the road, so then he turns right up the footpath and rides along there til he got to a road where he could turn right...

Post by: loony888 on February 25, 2009, 12:37:10 AM i'm fighting the urge to air my opinion on the fuzz............
but, the golden rule is simple, DENY! DENY! DENY! SAY NOTHING INCRIMINATING! NOTHING! tell him that's how you bought it, shrug your shoulders and act completely ignorant. and if you get pulled for speeding never, EVER admit to exceeding the limit, they will try all sorts of tactics in conversation to get the vaguest admission that you were doing something they want you to say you did. (notice i'm not saying you did anything at all, cause you didn't! did you?) more often than not they don't have the required minimum of evidence and require your "admission" to cement their justification for issuing a ticket. It's a game for these jokers and if you're smart enough to play it and not give them what they need on the roadside, chances are you're smart enough to hire a solicitor to fight their flimsy justification in court and win, so they will glare, frown and tut tut, but they'll also send you on your way. paul. p.s, i in no way condone breaking the law in any way. speed limits are in place for our safety and not for extorting road tax in any way! He actually rode on the footpath? A mate of mine got pinged for riding on the footpath to enter into a servo. He entered 1 driveway too early as the traffic had banked up from the intersection. He travelled 3m on the footpath! Don't u wish you had a video camera to get this sort of thing on tape!Title: Re: Took less than a week to get pulled over... Post by: MonsterDorf on February 26, 2009, 07:55:36 PM I'd have to agree with Loony888.
My son did some silly things with his mates (burnouts) and got reported. He was asked to show up at the local police station and I foolishly told him that telling the truth always pays off. So he admitted to doing the burnout and was very sorry. Result was a $380 fine and loss of points. His mates advised the police to take "sex and travel" (aka f off) and they got away Scott free. I was appalled and headed down to the station to have a chat, but unfortunately they simply advised he admitted to the offence and they had no option but to fine him - Bull I say. They could have given him a warning and told him to grow up. I paid the fine for him but couldn't obviously take to points - bottom line, silence is GOLD. I strongly believe that they are instilling the wrong behaviour in all of us - surely we all stuff up at some time (brain fart) and should be given the benefit of the doubt every now and then. Title: Re: Took less than a week to get pulled over... Post by: garrehz on February 26, 2009, 09:55:36 PM I totally agree. I also own a Nissan 180sx with a few "minor" modifications and a few years go I think I got a record of 4 defects in one year.. it was a joke.. the defects were not even for anything illegal... apparently my rear spoiler can chop people in half... after they fly over the bonnet and roof into it. and my stock standard steering wheel was obviously aftermarket... ( apparently boss kits can be well disguised..) oh and it was always to low.. and my pod filter even though it had the bracket and was installed by an authorised workshop was illegal.. every time i'd take it over the pits and pay the 50 bucks to rip the canary off.. nothing illegal. I really want to mod my monster.. but its story's like the above and my own experiences with my cage that im loathe to do so :(
Title: Re: Took less than a week to get pulled over... Post by: dragonworld. on March 02, 2009, 09:12:45 PM And at the "Island" last weekend the Plods were all anal about fender eliminators ! [roll]
From what I could gather there was virtually NO emphasis on actual safety related mechanical defects. :( Pull 'em over, book 'em, and take photos appeared to be the order of the day ! Harrasment ?? You betcha !! [leo] Doesnt seem worth dragging their hairy arses away from the coffee and donuts does it?? [roll] Changing tack though, one of the Bike Officers bit the dust on Friday night (fatal). Dont know the details but you dont like to see anyone on a bike go down. :( I'm not sure, but I think it was the only bike fatality of the weekend !! So much for the rest of us antisocials riding in inappropriate ways and risking injury?? [roll] Title: Re: Took less than a week to get pulled over... [roll] maybe Mr. Plod wasn't riding to the "conditions"? or maybe the numerous "modifications" made to his bike combined with "poor judgement" and "inappropriate speed" were to blame? hey, who knows, and dragonworld is right, it's never good to see anyone die on a bike, i wonder if his colleagues were as keen to issue a road safety message on the evening news with his bike mangled in the background? and sincerely, condolences to his family, his _real_ family, not the blue one. paul. Title: Re: Took less than a week to get pulled over... Post by: dragonworld. on March 02, 2009, 11:15:30 PM Absolutely Paul, and it just goes to show that no matter who you are and how much training you have, you have a lapse and make an error of judgement you can get bit and bit hard. :o
Just because you have this training also doesnt mean you can get complacent! [roll] Not saying this is what happened to the Cop, but sometimes all those lights, sirens and headlight etc, makes the human think they are "noticed" and therefore will be given way to. :o You can never forget the dropkick in the car is a potential handgrenade with a loose pin, and the road might not be in optimal condition ;) |
