I am a first time motorcycle owner, and am looking to get some basic tools to work on basic things on my bike. I saw a thread on here somewhere that listed these types of tools, but can't seem to find it.
I have allen wrenches and stuff, but what about things like:
rubber mallet
torque wrench (what size? 1/4 in? 3/8? what torque specs? 20 - 80 ft/lbs? 50 - 100 ft/lbs?)
allen set
...
what else?
thanks
DT
I found this link yesterday while looking for similar info

The ducatisuite link is good, but it's more than you need for starting off. Dave did a good write up on How To Stock A Basic Toolkit (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=12262.0).
I'd get a 3/8 torque wrench. What's your rear axle torque requirement? Get a torque wrench within that range. 20-80 is a good range. 50-100 is pretty useless. Most of the bolts on your bike will be less than 50. My first torque wrench was a 1/2 that went to 150 or so. That wasn't a good purchase. I use my 3/8 with a lower max value a lot more.
For an allen set, make sure to get the ones with the ball end. You'll use that feature a bunch.
perfect. I will get something like a 3/8 inch 20 - 80 ft/lbs torque wrench. I heard wheels are more than that torque though? But, i guess i'll be torqueing other things a ton more than taking a wheel off.
good call on the ball end allens.
thanks guys.

I recently added a MightyVac hand pump to my toolbox, and I'm really happy I did. I've been bleeding brakes forever using the 'pump it up and hold it' method, which works fine most of the time. With the MightyVac, I flushed/bled all 3 hydraulic lines this past weekend in about an hour, and they're rock solid. I should have got one of these a long time ago.
Though not specifically tools, here's a list of other useful links.

metric metric metric
All tools are hammers (except for the screw driver, which is a chisel). [thumbsup]
i personally like to use a stick welder, what ever doenst look right gets a clip and a jab.
when you buy tools that are used to remove objects based on shape, always buy quality. because a hexagon isnt the same in every country.
Basic kit for me would include the following:
Tire gauge
Metric socket set
Metric wrench set 10-19mm
Torque wrench
Metric Allen socket set
Metric Allen wrench set
Screwdriver set
This should allow you to do 90% of maintenance/repair/upgrade work on your bike.

CLASSIC!!!! [laugh]
As far as torque wrenches go, there is a good thread in the "tech" section.
I actually just purchased two (one small, one large) from chris @ ca-cycleworks.com
While they are not snap-on, I would rate them similar in quality to Craftsman, and they are nice and cheap, and come with plastic cases. According to my craftsman beam-type torque wrench, they are pretty accurate too!
