Title: Size to drill bars at?
Post by: VeryMetal on February 28, 2009, 03:15:35 PM
I'm fitting new bars and I am aware that I'm going to have to drill the bars for the notches in the controls (choke/ throttle cable housing and switches). Does anybody know what size the holes will need to be drilled at? I'm away from my bike for today and would like to pick up the correct drill bit on the way home otherwise I'd just measure the notches. I already consulted my Hanes manual but there's no mention of the specific size.

Thanks in advance for any info.

If anyone has any tips on the bar changing process I'd be grateful to know too!

not sure what kind of bars you had, but hte last set of adjustable ones were locked in such a way where if i drilled a hole, the contorls would never be able to move from that position again, so instead i dremeled the nubs off.

dremmil off and locate where you want the controls

2+ on the above;

I perfer this method so I can readjust the pitch of the bars & controls a couple of times; by drilling its a one time shot at getting it right.  I used a 1/2 round file but left a bit if a bump so the controls would bite into the bar.  I've also added 2 X around electrical tape; watch that the tape doesn't interfere with the choke lever.

Thanks guys, I think that's probably the best option. I wasn't really sure what the big deal is with drilling the bars. Surely that weakens them? No? Anyway, I guess I'll pull all the stuff off em and file those nubs! haha.

Love the timing... just got rid of the nubs on my buddy's Triumph today as we installed new bars on his bike. Even without them, the controls were solid.

I just went through this last week. I replaced the stock bars with some nice AFAM aluminum bars from ca-cycleworks. I agree that removing the nubs is the best option. I redrilled the holes, and it was a huge pain in the ass. With different pull back and rise than the stock bars, the controls didn't work in the stock location, so I ended up having to redrill everything. It was very time consuming. Just get rid of the nubs.

put a little grip tape underneath the controls if you like. this can help avoid them moving on you in the future
