Title: Barber Vintage Motorcycle Museum
Post by: AfroStar on March 01, 2009, 03:21:25 PM
Just wondering how many people have seen what my eyes seen.  "kid in a candy store, or a man at AVN" take your pick.....

I was packing my bike for a long move.  I figure I drop by the Barber Vintage motorcycle Museum.  Though I was crunch for time, this was the best detour ever.  I want to share this with my fellow Ducster...

Finally together with my Monster!  After I got the Monster off the truck, I left the engine running, thinking I needed to get all the fluid running after bouncing around for 1700 miles.

Off beat question,  the ramp onto the truck is about 3.5 feet high, who would ride up the ramp?

Here are a few pics.                  Enjoy Boys!!

I'm not a religious man, so this place (and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base's Museum) are the closest thing I have to Mecca  ;D

Awesome! Just awesome. I would trade my 12 year old for plane fare and a museum ticket. OK, don't tell my wife!! [laugh] That is way way up at the top of my favorite destinations. You are a lucky man. I could live there, get a job just dusting the bikes and wiping off fingerprints... probably my own. A friend (Leo are you out there?) from the DFWM group moved back to Atlanta and has tortured us with tales and pics of the October vintage races at Barber and hanging out at the museum. That's when I would like to be there. How cool would that be? Leo, I warning you, this October you may find me on your doorstep!! I'll make up for it... I'll bring some subs from the Elbow Room by Baylor Hospital! [laugh] Inside joke.

Wait a minute!!! Eight pictures. You can't tell me that's all you took!!! Come on, give it up, share with your friends! >:(

I've been there. Too much to see in a day.

It was several years ago and at the time none of the KR Yamis were on display yet. Have they remedied that?

Three days was almost enough :)

I was there as part of the '06 monster challenge, and the place... is cooler than cool. Imiagine someone with unlimited cash and a passion for motorcycles. Now imagine that spirit just enfuses every aspect of the place.

Example: They encouraged us to periodically start our bikes up when they were on display as part of the challenge.

Some guy  would start up a bike on the shop level (lowest level, where they are actively restoring bikes) and we'd get these sound wars going between our monsters and whatever was running downstairs.

Supposedly we were only supposed to stay for two days, but Mr. Barber personally extended it another day because he liked the challenge so much.

It's an honest to god living museum, where the bikes still get used, worked on... My version of heaven is to come back as a bike in the Barber museum :)

Anyway, I was there in '06 and I remember at least one KR Yamaha. But this was part of a great display on GP bikes over the ages; there was no dedicated KR display.

Fantastic place to visit -- it really and truly is a great museum.

One day there is another Ducati-powered creation that may grace their collection.  I still haven't decided if I will sell it to them though...

I had butterflies flying in my stomach as soon as walked in...the basement which was working on a restoration, so we did not get to go down.  There were Porsches and other vehicles too.  I saw only one Monster s4r 2005-6 blue with stripes....

There was also several groups of Porsches driving track.... drooool....

most of the bikes had new seats, which make sense due to the history of the bikes.  The new seats were like a rough suede, or Alcantara.  I like it... nice touch...

Its amazing that from the oldest bike to the newest bike, someone rode the bike.  Back when the motorcycle was still developing, I can't believe the variation of bikes and dedication to riding the two wheel backsing.....
Did not notice any KR..spent only 3 hours there :'(

What I concluded from my trip.
Maserati made bikes?, Harley looked cool back then (when they were racing), Other brands that I didn't know of (Especially Italians),
My passion for Motorcycle just went up 10 notch!!
The Album if anybody have time to look at.

Oh, and I did not ride up the ramp.  I chickened out, and my friends were giving me a hard time.  my defense was that i haven't rode in 3 months, not used to the ramp height. All good as long as i have the Monster off and with me in one piece. Now I'm ready for Spring!! [moto]

Spent a day there a few yrs ago when I was stuck out of NO for Katrina. Truly a religious experience. While I was there, they came in, wheeled out some 1920's Beemer, fired it up and took it out on the track  :o

Thanks for the pics, especially New Blue  [thumbsup]
Will be out there in early May. I'll be going back to the museum.

When I lived in Atlanta, made the trip several times.  Spent more time there one weekend during a Mustang show in the musuem than around the cars.  Sad thing is my car was in the car show too.

It's actually about a 6 or 8 hr drive as I recall, Bick. I'm on call this weekend, so I can't go that far away.

I live in B'ham and you know occasionally they sell some of the bikes on display.  Probably nothing to exotic but still very quality.

Google Maps says 5 hours, 1 minute, door to door.  You're @ 1 1/2 - 2 hours south of here?

I will be down here through next weekend.  I will be making the pilgrimage at some point while I am here.
