Title: How loud is the QD Ex Box on a 696??? Post by: oilpatch rider on March 01, 2009, 07:19:34 PM Hey folks, this is my first post though I've been checking out this site and the old one for a couple years now.
I'm looking to pull the trigger on a new exhaust for the 696. I love the look of the Ex Box but I haven't seen or heard any in person. The only aftermarket exhaust I've heard installed is the Termi carbon and I was wondering how it compares. Any info would be great as it's -27 degrees celcius outside so I might as well be modding for the summer! I love Northern Alberta! ;D Title: Re: How loud is the QD Ex Box on a 696??? Sorry... had to say it. There are posts on YouTube with clips of different exhausts, but it is not the same as hearing it in person. Does anyone remember the post on TOB that had different exhaust clips all on one page for comparison? I can't find it, but seem to recall there being an ExBox on that page, along with other popular systems. They were all pre-696, but I'd venture that the comparison would be relatively similar. I'd still try to hear it in person if you can. Title: Re: How loud is the QD Ex Box on a 696??? Post by: Slide Panda on March 02, 2009, 12:08:15 PM Don't know about a 696, just I have heard on in person on an S2R 800. It was lounder than stock, but not as loud as the more normal aftermarket cans - close but not quite. Also the all metal construction gives it a different note than the carbon offerings. At one point there was a video from a track day with a ex-box'ed Monster going past the camera. Sounded more like a WWII fighter buzzing the camera than a bike... [thumbsup]

After Jewcati threw his S2R800 down the road two years ago I had the task of rebuilding it. After I was done I spent a few days riding it just to be sure it was in tip top condition and his ex-box was definately louder than most aftermarket exhausts I have heard. As a reference point, at the time I had a Leo CF exhaust on my Monster and when visiting a friend he mentioned he heard me approaching much farther away that he usually does. If your behind the bike, the regular rearward exahust will be louder. if your standing at the right side, the exbox is louder. if your standing at any given location, its likely that regular rear facing pipes are louder.
I think that Termis are louder in comparison, but that might just because they carry more bass and actually direct it somewhere isntead of spitting the sound out into a box that directs it no where in particular. My refrence point: is Chchader who i ride with all the time. From the rear, i cant hear his bike at all over my own exhuast (open udder) and my other friends termis on his 749s which i can hear all the time (cause its pointing at me). if you WOT it, though, i doubt you can tell the difference cause youd be deaf already. The Termis were louder, but not by so much to make me like the Ex-Box less.
Over all, I like the Ex-Box better: more open look to the rear wheel and they sound great. I only with the mounting bracket had provisions for grommets. A homemade bracket is on my to-do list. Interesting... I wonder if the exbox would be any better at keeping drivers from changing lanes onto you (from the right side). I'd also think it would be louder from the rider's perspective when riding past walls and between cars. |
