On May 2-3, 2009, I'll spend the weekend walking, along with thousands of other people, in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. I will walk the distance of a marathon (26.2 miles) the first day, and I will walk a half-marathon the second. I'll have been spending the past few month and will spend the next few months training, fundraising, and preparing for the event. It's the biggest challenge I've ever taken on, but I'm very excited about doing it because I know it will make a real difference to the millions of people affected by breast cancer.
The money raised is managed and disbursed by the Avon Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity with a mission to fund access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer. The Avon Foundation funds both local and national organizations in five key areas: medical research; education and early detection programs; clinical care; and support services, all with a focus on the medically underserved.
Please help to support my efforts and this critically important cause by making a generous contribution. Please remember as you're making your donation that in less than the time it took to read this post, another woman in the U.S. was diagnosed with breast cancer.

AWESOME!!! [thumbsup]
Bumping for the cause!
If you are in the area, there is a fundraising type event at Helix in DC this weekend I believe.
Cool! Unfortunately, I doubt that I'll be able to get over there if it's in the evening. I have kidlet this weekend and she is having her 10th birthday, sleepover, drama, crying in the corner party.
Sounds just like my 10th birthday! Except we jousted with sticks on our bicycles. Hopefully you have fewer trips to the emergency room.
Well I can't exactly claim that we had the best weather I've ever seen for much of anything...unless of course, you're a duck of the feathered variety. Saturday was overcast (which was great) and we didn't get rained on much at all just a few sprinkles there and here. Saw John "The Stick" Bowman helping out on the Moto Safety crew - absolutely a great bunch of people. I don't see how we would ever have made it through these 39 miles without their help.
Around mile 14, my friends I were greeted by Zooom (in usual attire) with snacks!!! Yay for Extreme Pickle Chips. Gave us the extra kick we needed to make it up the hill in front of Sibley Hospital.
Somewhere about mile 18, i stepped funny and managed to come down hard on both knees and felt a nasty twinge in my bag; having just started to feel 100% recovered from my herniated disk problem, I was a little bit concerned. I limped to the next rest stop and had them sweep me to the medical center. We ruled out any issues with my disk, but I had Zooom pick me up there and I headed home for a hot shower and a few glasses of wine.
Sunday dawned rainy....very rainy. Still had another 13.1 to walk and my back (with the help of Advil and wine the previous evening) was feeling excellent. Zooom and I headed to a point near the start and I got out of the car and started warming up. He joined me in rain, sporting brightly colored swim trunks and t-shirt which read "Got Breastmilk?" Needless to say, more than a few of the walkers, were taking pictures and promising to post his image all over facebook.
Soon, I spotted some of my teammates and I was on the way. It only took a few minutes for my feet to completely drenched, but sprits were high. We walked down Connecticut Avenue through Chevy Chase and I met up again with Zooom near the circle. Mile after mile of very drippy walkers (although enthusiastic)!
I finally finished around 1-something and headed back for a hot shower!
Thanks to everyone that supported me.
