Title: How loud are pod filters?
Post by: Monstermash on March 02, 2009, 12:06:49 PM
So now that I have the new custom exhaust on my bike I have been giving some thought to adding pod filters. The issue I have is I hate the way an open air box sounds. I bought a stock air box cover and modded it to mimic the DP part and it sound almost like a "honk" when you get on it and I just can't get used to it.
So my question is in two parts:

 1. In terms of volume, how loud are the pod filters compared to an open airbox?

 2. Do they sound similar to an open airbox?

I really get the feeling the honking sound I don't like can be attributed to the shape of the airbox.

Can you send me a pic of your open air box or a DP airbox?  I just picked a second airbox and would like to modify it but don't want to cut it all the way open.

the honk is always there, because of the throttle bodies gulping copious amounts of air. Opening the air box lets that sound out, and adding pods restricts it even less. I am sure that the box helps resonant this glorious sound that you so despise. I have pods now but had the open airbox before, and with my exhaust, i can't really hear the difference in the 'honk'.

this honk is the same sound that comes from an old-school v-8 when you mash the accelerator, especially pronounced when the exhaust has been quieted. That is the sound i always associate it with. Something to consider, only the rider can really hear the honk.

just keep telling yourself, it is good for the bike, so it is good for me!

You're worried about intake noise with an exhaust that's almost 100db at idle?  [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]

Lol. 100db isn't as loud as you might think. I know compared to some exhausts that are around 87db my 97.5 seems like it's rediculas but it's not.

To give you an idea of what the difference in levels are for everyday things here's a quick list.

30db-quiet library
60-70db normal conversation
85db-city traffic (inside car)
95db-train from 200'
115db-rock concert
140db-shotgun blast

It's no really so much how loud the pods would be it's more of the type of sound they make. To me if I can hear theom over my exhaust, which is very possible because you right over it, then it's too loud.

You will hear it.

You will hear it but it will not drown out the exhaust.  More like they work together in harmonious symphony to cause massive bleeding from the ears.  It's great.

I've got pods and it is quieter in the saddle than my open airbox was.  The honking is not really there unless you go wot in too low a gear.

Which is a regular occurrence when I'm riding.  ;D

For me the Pods are more of a pressure thing, if that makes any sense.  You can certainly hear the bike sucking down the air, but its also kinda or a pulsating pressure on your ears under hard acceleration.

As I re-read this, it makes less sense...its like a whum-whum-whum-whum-whaaaaaAAAAAA!!!

hope that helps (probably not...)

FCR's and pods on mine.
the FCR's make a chirping noise at part to closed throttle.
would not say the pods are louder than the open airbox.
possibally deeper sound, less "honk"

pod filters are the greatest.  and if youre worried about them being too loud, then its not for you.  i have no exhaust past the headers on my bike and i can hear the pod filters over the exhaust when im cruising at highway speeds, and at lower speeds... and basically anytime im on the bike.  BUT its not a bad sound and i wouldnt want to change it.
