Or something else? I plan to bring a few tools, and I'll be on or near I95 on the east coast of U.S. I just don't want to be stranded without someone to call if I have a problem. What do you guys do?
We have AAA for our [moto] and it has been useful to us a couple times while away from home.
Definately worth it IMO.

Yeah, I live right off the 95 in CT and have tools, truck, and ramp just in case...

I'm in the DC area. Planning a trip to Columbia, SC where my family is. Depending on how much time I have, I'll add a few stopovers in various places like Harrisonburg, VA (daughter is in college there); somewhere in West VA (have a friend there); Union City, TN (another friends house); Skyline Drive, Blue Ridge Parkway, etc.
This will be my first long trip on a bike since the 70's. :P
double-check it works in the states you want to go to.
I know AAA works in so-cal, but not in nor-cal. ???
Join the AMA online for $39 and have it auto renewed and you get free road side assistance.
AAA is a good thing to have. Even if you aren't taking a trip.
AAA will get you discounts on things like hotel rooms too.

+1 on this.
make sure you dont pony up for AAA, only to find that it is of no use becuase
a) they dont serve the state you break down in
b) you only got it for 1 state....not the country
dont ask me how i found out about this [bang]
They only help motorcycles with certain (expensive) plans. That "any vehicle" nonsense is an absolute crock of shit. I broke down, they told me to go fry ice. It was december in the middle of nowhere, winter, at night. I thought I was going to die. I'd go with the AMA.

Define expensive.
I pay $139/yr for Plus/RV - Covers any breakdown, Any vehicle (including motorcycle), anywhere in US or Canada.
What does everyone else pay?

That's about three times what the standard plan which is what I had at the time runs.
I figure free towing up to 100 miles is well worth the difference.
I am just suprised how much difference there is in clubs state to state. I thought benifits would be pretty much the same.
I think I'm gonna pony up for the AAA RV+ plan. It's a little pricey, but well worth the comfort I'll have knowing I can be rescued.
I've also been following the other recent thread about making a long trip. Lots of good advice there too.

Standard plan only gets you towed 7 miles. The plus /rv (moto) plan is a good deal if you use it just once or it can pay for itself in discounts.
Infoage crashed heading up to Monterey for the races a few years back. He got towed exactly 100 miles, dropped off at a gas station in the valley and I drove him home. That tow probably cost AAA $3-500. AAA provides roadside service anywhere in north america and canada per their website.
I have AAA gold for the cars at ~100. I do all my own work and want to be able to get the car home. I don't bother with the bike. If anything happens within a couple hundred miles of home, I have friends, wife, kids, trailer etc.
Out on the road past that point you're hosed anyhow. I figure either an AMA connection (you should belong regardless) or whatever sort of shop you need will come fetch you.
So far I have not had the need, if I ever do I'll let ya know how my plan works.
As an aside...
Couple years back My son and a pal were outbound 4th of July weekend. We live in Mpls area. He got as far as Albert Lea on the freeway and for whatever reason shredded his rear tire. Nothing was open, worst case kind of deal but he was only about 100 miles out. I yanked the rear off of my monster and ran it down to him, swapped it out and he was good to go. Prior to all this another motorist had stopped, gone and fetched his trailer and got them off the side of the freeway to a gas station.
There's almost always options. I ran into a certified Duc wrench in Ukiah Or a couple years back. Google it, middle of freakin nowhere, less than 100 folks. There's always a way.
Prepare as best ya can, PM the bike, enjoy. And don't forget your cell phone.

Curious why you chose AAA over the AMA?? The AMA is an organization that fights legal battles for us and your money directly benefits motorcycling. It's your money but I thought I should kick in my 2 cents worth.

The AAA membership could pull double-duty as I also travel a lot with my car. I've been considering joing AMA also, for just the reasons you mentioned.
I am planning a trip also, and am insured with Gieco, so i called them to see what they offer... Roadside assistance...$10 a year 75mile tow.
I think i may do that and get the AMA also.
You might want to read all the details but here's the jist.
