Title: strange tank or not?
Post by: elephantrider70 on March 04, 2009, 02:56:50 PM
i purchased a 99 chromo 750 at the wopping price of 1,500.00. granted it needs afew thing, after replacing the rear wheel bearings it was road worthy. i just wanted to know if anyone was familiar with the tank i have it has two intake ports that go through the tank and into the airbox.   puzzling! ???

(My guess is:) You have the uber-rare RoadRacing aluminum tank with the air-intakes through the tank.  It was an option that few people bought (even fewer than the few who actually bought the tank!)

For what you paid (providing the tank is dent-free) you got a $1500 tank and a free M750 below it.  [laugh]  Good luck with the new project and ride safe!

BTW, there were NO factory chromo750's.  All Monster Chromo's were 900's and they were model year '99 and '01 only.

'cept for the equally uber-rare, non-US Chromo 1000 from '03 (or was it '04?)   ;)

edit:  I went snooping around ducati.com and found the '03 1000 listed for only the S and dark version (also pretty rare).  I'm gonna need to check my facts, me thinks, but I'm pretty sure they did a m1000 chromo.  I betcha DucSea knows.

I see now.

Old monster with vents through the tank=coolness.
New monster with vents through the tank=lame.

Did anyone say that the vents were cool?!?  If so....I missed that....  We just said it was 'uber rare'.  You inferred it was cool.  [cheeky]

Sounds like this guy got a great deal though.  As long as the title is clear and it only took a rear bearing to make it ridable then that is smokin cheap.  Even if it is not perfect for that price it would make an incredible base for a sweet project.

it was indeed planned but never made again into production...1999 and 2001 only.

to get back on topic after all this thread jacking diversion (and I'm thinking a of a finger here too ...lol)

intersting facts on aluminum tanks; rare and collectable!

Q - How many aluminum tanks were made and how many were purchased in N America?  (lets see if Dave R can answer that one ...;)

I saw a mouto guzzi with a polished aluminum tank; its looked very nice ... makes sens to have aluminum tanks; why dont manufactures do this more often?  (Plastic is cheeper and weight is about the same no doubt)

plastic is 10x heavier. aluminum is$$$ to shape because it needs to be done by hand. i mpretty sure you can stamp them out though.

i had a road racing tank. shit was the bombz!!!!
