Title: Ok, I'm new to Ducati and new to this forum.....
Post by: xsf18cdf on March 05, 2009, 07:54:16 AM
Just got a new S4Rs after owning/riding Jap and HD (and one Bultaco) bikes since I was 12.  Always wanted a Ducati and now I am also lusting after a HM to go with it- even though I only have only 4 miles on the odometer of the S4Rs.  So....any words of advice for a noob?  I would like to pay for some one-on-one track time from a pro and learn this bike right.  I'm not far from Cresson if you all can recommend a good instructor.  Anyone have any experience with AMS?  Is DFWM an internet club or is there a "flesh-and-blood" club...you know- funny hats, handshkes and pagan rituals?
Thanks,
Gary

congrats and welcome.
check the AMS website for track days and also check into Eagles Canyon where you can get Ty Howard for private lessons.  another forum member here goes there and he really likes it.

if you can make it tonight, come to Motopia for their event tonight to meet some of the folks.  there is a thread on that here.

Oh yeah, we have all those.  ;D

Welcome and congrat's on the bike! Now's definitely the time of year to start thinking about track--many AMS days at Cresson along with some private track days and instruction. There are already a few posted in threads on this board.

We also have many meets, rides, and other events (some requiring the secret handshake  ;)). Hope to meet you soon.  [thumbsup]

I'd love to make it tonight, but I'm in Afghanistan right now, so even if I start right now....I don't think I'd be there in time.  I look forward to meeting some of you folks when I return in a few weeks.

Welcome to the group!

Track season is starting up and I can't wait.  AMS runs a few "big" Euro days only during the year.  Last I talked to Scott at AMS the dates aren't in set in stone yet, but they do have a good number of private days on the schedule for Mar/Apr.  The private days are good to go to if you want some personal tips and time to work on stuff by yourself as well.

As posted earlier, there's another member here that gets instruction from Ty Howard from time to time.  I plan on doing one of those this year as well

Gary, welcome to the club.  [thumbsup]  If you are from around here in Texas you know how great people are here in North Texas and this group is no exception. Lot's of gatherings such as trips, rides, drinking sessions called Flash Mobs at select venues of libation here in Dallas and Fort Worth and of course my exceptionally great tasting internationally famous Fort Worth, Texas Style BBQ brisket, ribs, foul and pork meats that I smoke up for the upcoming pool parties that I am planning this year that you'll definately have to plan on coming to. All in all this is a great place for rides, tech tips, and social events for all things Ducati.

I too wish to thank you for your service to our country. It's guys and gals like you that make this country great.  [clap]
Thanks, RED

More importantly, what kind of 'taco did you have? I used to race 250cc Pursangs back in the 70s out of the old Dallas Bultaco shop down on Industrial Blvd... I think it was on Mississippi street. Had friends who had Sherpa Ts. Loved riding those trials bikes!! Also had a buddy that road raced a Metralla. Ahhh, the smell of gas and Klotz oil mix!! [moto]

I had a Sherpa T 350 when I was a sophomore in high school.  I raced Yamaha YZ's in the 70's at Austin Motocross Park when I was in high school after starting on a Honda XR75 in JR High.  Even rode a stripped AMF Harley enduro a few times.  I am eager to get home and get my Monster registered so I can put more than the 4 miles I have ridden on my street after it was delivered.
Take care,
Gary

P.S.  When you say "Austin Motocross Park" was that in Austin, Texas?

I look forward to meeting you and your monster when you get back into town. I foresee tons of fun this spring as the doldrums of winter retreat in our rear view mirrors!   [moto]

Yes I grew up in Austin....though some might consider the "grew up' part debateable.

Very cool, me too; '64 - '86.  All of my family is still there.  Good riding roads for sure, out west especially.  Luv that hill country!  [thumbsup]

I went to Crockett and Macallum w/Sr year of HS in Round Rock....moved around alot.....then joined the army and finally retired here in Weatherford after 24 years.  I still keep in touch with some friends from those times.  I keep one bike in Austin and just got my new bike for here.  I like riding 2222 in Austin.

I lived in Austin for almost 10 years and learned how to ride my moto there.  There's no place like Austin.  2222 is a fun road to strafe down [thumbsup]

620 around the lake was good but that was in the early 70s when it was still a po-dunk two lane farm to market. Don't even recognize it now. :P Bee Caves used to be good too... "used to" being the operative words.

I bought it over the phone while overseas and had it delivered to my house.  It was delivered the day after the big ice storm and of course I had to ride it up and down my road.  Needless to say, I had it sideways with one mile on the odometer.  Its a Tricolore....can't remember the number (I came back over here a couple days later) I think its 145 or 147.  I did buy a pearl/red tank, tail, fairing for it.  I will keep the Tricolore set as pristine as I can.  I really like the pearl/red, but it wasn't available with the gold wheels/frame.  I can't wait to get home to ride it.  Hopefully I can get up with some of you folks as well.
Thanks,
Gary

Thanks,

I had a nice glass (or two) of some Lagavulin 16 and sat out by a nice fire on (what turned out to be) a brisk evening....It was as nice as it gets over here.

You all ride safe and I'll see you in a couple months,

Gary
