For those guys out there who painted their exhaust heat shields on their 696 with high temp paint, did you guys prime or sand them at all, or just applied multiple coats of the high temp paint?  I was also thinking of maybe painting the stock rear sets too, do you guys think priming or sanding would be required on those, or just go at it with the paint?Thanks!

You should sand it, theres always some type of crap hidden in it and sanding will make a nice surface to work on. hit it with 3-4 layers. and bake it if you can. they scratch off easily if you dont.

as for the rear sets, i would not spray paint them. they are high wear, and they will scratch easily. Powdercoat them instead!

But you can just PC everything.  If you shop around, you can prob get the shields done for less than $30, same with the rear sets.  They are easy to come off - getting the spring back on for the rear brake is a major pain but doable.  I'm actually putting some reflective black tape on the high wear spots to protect the PC from my boots.

I BBQ painted the Exhaust and Headers on my GF's 696 and all I did was clean them with soapy water prior to applying the paint. I gave it about 6 coats, then put it into the oven to back for 30 minutes :).  The paint is pretty much rock solid, you can't tell it's not original.

Same here, cleaned the shields and mounts thoroughly with lots of detergent just using a rough sponge. Then dry and pre-heat in the oven and applying two layers of high temp spray paint while the parts were still warm. Then heated it again for 20 mins. Sticks nicely so far. Much better than the cheap aluminum look.  :)

any pics of them painted? I noticed the 1100 covers are black, is it similar? thanks [beer]

if you are looking at the 1100s they are CF stock

What temps should you bake at in the oven?  Preheat and after painting?
