I spoke with Stuart day before yesterday about our next tech session specifically what I have heard at the last tech session and what's been posted on the board. Stuart is of the mind that a general mechanics / how to limp it in when things go bad kind of class. I asked about a transmission class and he seems to think that there is not enough material for one class. If Transmission is something you really want, we probably want to look at what other less complex subjects we could we could tackle in the same class. I also think we need to write a sort of list of 1) things you want to accomplish/ learn 2) this is for after the a subject is chosen what specific questions about the subject mater do you have, to include what models/year/ set up. That way Stuart can have any examples he needs and we don't miss anything we wanted to see/ learn. Please tell me where I am screwy or what I missed when you post what you want. Once I get several subjects I'll post a poll. Or I'll shut up an leave well enough alone.
Kirk
Thanks Kirk for taking this on; I appreciate your efforts. Now all I've got to do is make the NEXT tech session [bang]

I like the idea of learning more about Trans/gearbox stuff and even crank/con rods/pistons including bearing replacements. I was chatting with Stuart about maybe a fork service (don't remember what came of it) he said he didn't have shock compression tools. I liked dealing with cdc's fueling issues and am interested in more of that to include TPS.
Thanks for pursuing this.
Steve
Given the chatter on another thread right now, I'd like to ask Stuart to talk about Ducati engines; bevel drive vs. belt drive; brass shells vs. roller bearings; Desmodromic valves vs. conventional valve springs Vs. pneumatic valve actuation; design reasons for a horizontally split engine case vs. whatever the L-Twin has now ;D And maybe he could shed some light on the valve gear in the D16GP6 engine [evil]
I'd be really interested in all that.

What to do if the motor dies while riding.
Diagnosing bike failing to shift.
What to do if you do get a flat tire.

The above would include emergency fixes.
I paraphrased and divided some of the subjects into two categories. If I screwed up your intended subject Please let me know so I can correct it. I am probably going to take the whole thread and print it in order to go through it with Stuart and see what is feasible or not and what should be grouped together. I am listing it like this to see if it stimulates any other subjects and so that you guys can look it over and be sure I have the subjects correct.
Kirk
Kirk that looks like a good list of topics
Something to add: Suspension basics
That looks like a stellar list Kirk; all sorts of good stuff in there although this one is my favorite...

Thanks for putting this list together. Hopefully we can get another tech session going soon [thumbsup]

Stuart did a great job at Tech I, starting out with a tool briefing.
Maybe he could recommend a travel tool kit. It would be a little different for different bikes, but mostly standard stuff. Even stuff you wouldn't think of (like what I saw Hiero use on my 1098 in the HC), things like zip ties, rags, ziplock sammich bags, a syphoning/bleeding hose, asswipe, snakebite kit, etc.
I'd actually be really interested in how to install new pistons/rings and how to lap valves and clean up the carbon deposits on valves/tops of pistons...
Porting [thumbsup]
I guess what interests me most is engine building ??? In fact, while I'm dreaming, I'd like to be a RACE ENGINE builder...

I talked to Stuart today and got feed back on the posted list. He is recommending the below topics in a three and a half to four hour class.
Chain care and removal/replace
Wheel removal
Basic electric
Fuel System
Air and Oil filter
Basic breaks and pad
Specialized tools
These topics would be along the lines of DIY maintenance/ service intervals and limp it home in a fix.
He would like to do this in no more than a six person class based on the size of his shop and his student herding abilities. I suggested two classes on different weekends based on the interest expressed previously. This also allows us the students some wiggle in our schedules. The Saturdays we talked about were the middle and end of April trying to split the month that lines up with these potential dates 11th, 18th and 25th. There is no reason we can't roll over into May if that is what you want. But we need to pick two.
The subjects not addressed especially the engine stuff. Stuart brought up the unaddressed subjects with some hesitance on how to 1. figure put at what level of technical expertise one could assume everyone would have and so where to start. 2. Whose engine could you use to potentially screw up. So I asked him if he would be interested in doing something like a two hour, for lack of a better term “lectureâ€. He doubts there is interest in this but is willing to do a lecture type thing. He is not opposed to this serving the purpose of establishing a base line for a dirty hands kind of class, but it still leaves the question of where to get the donor engine. That leaves Fork service, Suspension basics, TPS and I regret to report I failed to address these subjects with him at all. I was driving and pulled over to talk to him, so I didn't have the list on me. Sorry. Who is in and what Saturday.
I'm in. Date flexible for now.
Thanks for chatting him up.
If we do suspension sometime, we could use Tommy's forks as the lab experiment.

If you cannot get your sag set correctly with existing springs, tell your friendly neighborhood Ducati Ohlins merchant your weight with gear and what bike and forks, and they can get you the right springs ahead of time.
Same deal with the shock. Your butt feels that more than it does the forks, so it has a lot to do with general feelings of confidence. Stuart ought to be able to change that too. It might run into more time than is available in class, so you might have to pull the suspension off the bike and bring it with you.

I wonder if Stuart might be interested in:
1) Holding these tech sessions at Motopia (they have no mechanic there now and are looking for one), and
2) Operating a "satellite shop" at Motopia a couple of days a week - I'd sure patronize him there.
That nice little shop is just sitting there empty, and I gotta believe he could stay pretty busy - even if he transported the Ducs back to the home nest.
Well, that's what I wonder...time for my meds.

Interesting. I will attempt to answer these questions tomorrow after collecting more info.
I would be interested in heading up to dallas if he ever gets around to demonstrating/teaching how to install rings, lap valves, and clean heads. I'll keep an eye out on what's going on, but like everyone said, thanks for checking for us!

I count 9 above and if there are 6 spots per class that would leave 3 more spots no?
Anyway, I'm going to have to pass this time 'round. I'm working Saturdays this month. I would go anyway just to hear Stuart's take on these items but I think I'm pretty familiar with the topics to be discussed. So the road hazards thing will address stuff like flats, chains, minor diagnostic issues, basically getting yourself out of sticky situations and knowing when to throw the towel in and call the flat bed. If this answer is not complete enough let me know and I'll find out more info for you.

for the record, I have push started the 748 when the starter solenoid went out on me, not a 1098, but equally interesting I think
Alone, push starting a 1098 may be impossible. It was for me. Having a helper (pusher) with a strong back and some serious leg muscles it is barely possible after a few tries perfecting the technique. I don't even want to think about it on an 1198.

Glad I went and well worth the money. You get to pick Stuart's brain while watching him wrench on stuff. What's not to like? (except the 9am part!)
My favorite part (if I can spill the secret learned) was when Stuart was asked for his preferred method of cleaning chains. He replied that he'd "never cleaned a chain". That's all I needed to hear to keep me from ever scrubbing a chain again! [thumbsup]
Highly recommended, and I'm in for the next one!

Well, hell, I don't need the class now!!! ;D
Anyone else "in" for Saturday?!?
Stuart is doing us a huge favor here. Could you imagine asking AMS or Eurosport to teach a similar class? It is truly incredible that he is willing to teach, and the $50 for 4 hours is an unreal bargain.
That being said, I feel that we should treat Stuart with the respect that he deserves. Several people did not show up for the last event, and they did not let anyone know that they were bailing. I, for one, would have happily filled one of the empty spots. A short post on either board would have opened the slot up to someone who could make it.
Let's not ruin a good thing here. If Stuart is expecting 5 or 6 people, and only 2 show up, he may decide that it isn't worth teaching the class. There are only 2 people scheduled for this weekend, but at least he knows that. Incredibly he is willing to teach a 4 hour class for only $100 :o :o
If you commit to a spot in the class, please make every effort to be there. If not, please be courteous enough to let Kirk know. We really do not want to lose this resource.
I would like to thank Kirk once again for setting this all up.

Awesome day! Huge thanks to Kirk for organizing, & Stuart of course for tolerating us [thumbsup]
Lots learned today...
CDC's front axle is no longer square, back to round, & we saved Kirk's bike from certain destruction (screws holding the front cam pulley were just about to fall out).
Plus we got to witness the oh-so-expensive Ducati Corse belt tension harmonizer gizmo in action!
Looking forward to the next one [moto]
