Title: Install Competition Werkes Tail Chop on M696 Post by: whatsup on March 07, 2009, 05:42:11 AM Ok, for someone not mechanically inclined -- at all, how difficult is it to install the CW tail chop on a Monster 696? I'd hate to be in a position where it's all torn apart and then difficult to get it to the dealer. Or should I just have the dealer do it.
Title: Re: Install Competition Werkes Tail Chop on M696 Post by: Raux on March 07, 2009, 05:48:37 AM it's easy, just have an extra pair of hands to hold things in place as you screw things in place.

If you're NOT mechanically inclined, let someone else do it. I'm pretty handy and got frustrated. The instructions IIRC did not tell you how to route the cable for the seat lock.
Title: Re: Install Competition Werkes Tail Chop on M696 Post by: DucatiTorrey on March 07, 2009, 08:34:01 AM its super easy, i did it last week, the hardest part for me was detaching the seat cable from the stock fender and stuff. All you have to do is pull up on the red portion of the cable (right before the end of the cable) then the cable will detach. And you dont have to take apart the lock (dont unscrew the end screw, doing this will keep you from having to reatach the spring, just undo the large nut.)
its really simple really. An extra set of hands would be nice. maybe takes an hour, mostly taking stock apart, its kinda scary, but nothing can get hurt i ended up takin a picture with my digital camera JUST in case i had to put it all back together, so i knew where the wires all went but i didn't have to, and it was all totally worth it good luck, have a beer and take your time [beer] Title: Re: Install Competition Werkes Tail Chop on M696 Post by: JEFF_H on March 09, 2009, 02:25:54 PM there's pics at the bottom of this page-

Title: Re: Install Competition Werkes Tail Chop on M696 Post by: OstOgBajer on March 09, 2009, 06:10:17 PM man i like the kit so much better with the plate in the lower forward position! ill post pics of mine this week once powder coat is done [drink] [drink] I do too, but I would be worried about cops noticing and pulling me over. I don't even like the retarded light that comes with the kit that only lights up 1/3 of the plate. How are you mounting the turn signals with the plate in the forward position? Title: Re: Install Competition Werkes Tail Chop on M696 Post by: DucatiTorrey on March 09, 2009, 06:13:01 PM you'll notice two holes that are to be filled with plastic plugs that are provided. i am putting a bracket above that mounting to those holes, that comes down on either side for the blinkers. ill post pics tomorrow night. it will be all assembled. easier to see than to explain i guess. basically stock position.
i'm not sure the lower plate position is illegal im michigan. if it is, ill just move it up, no biggie, you can see it fine from the rear. oh well, ;D Title: Re: Install Competition Werkes Tail Chop on M696 Post by: OstOgBajer on March 09, 2009, 06:26:41 PM you'll notice two holes that are to be filled with plastic plugs that are provided. i am putting a bracket above that mounting to those holes, that comes down on either side for the blinkers. ill post pics tomorrow night. it will be all assembled. easier to see than to explain i guess. basically stock position. i'm not sure the lower plate position is illegal im michigan. if it is, ill just move it up, no biggie, you can see it fine from the rear. oh well, ;D I guess I'll see when you post pics, but how are you routing the wires then? They would normally go through the holes you mentioned. I don't think the position is illegal here, but that never stops cops from pulling you over and ticketing you anyway. Then you have to explain to the judge why it's not illegal. I'd just rather not mess with the po-po if I don't have to, I have family that have been screwed over by cops due to ignorance, meeting a quota or a thirst for power... I've also heard a cop say he would pull over a bike that doesn't have the stock rear fender holding the plate, because "only people who want to outrun the cops will try to hide their plate" like that. bass astards I say. Title: Re: Install Competition Werkes Tail Chop on M696 Post by: DucatiTorrey on March 11, 2009, 03:24:55 PM here are some camera phone pics of the install after satin black powder coat was done. I put the plate in the lower forward position, and made a bracket out of AL for the stock turn signals. not sure if i like them, but their position is fine, and it doesn't look half bad. I want to paint the hardware black, and i still need to attach the plate light. what do you all think? I think its 100% better black (and 300% better than stock)
